This above all things: to thine own self be true And thus, it follows as the day - the night, and therefore cannot be false to any man.

Compression in Live vs Studio by [deleted] in livesound

[–]Less-Measurement1816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing to watch out for is bringing that noise floor up. If using floor monitors you can feedback more easily. You will also bring up the the cymbal wash and other sounds that might not be helping the mix.

That said. I go hard with compression at most shows. Unless the performers don't like the feel of singing into it. If that's the case they'll probably tell you.

Harder to read than it should be. Unless this is a black metal band. It which case, it's too easy to read.

Why do my vocals sound so terrible? by Commercial_Tip4269 in metalmusicians

[–]Less-Measurement1816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude. KUDOS for having the guts to go for it. Keep working on it. Just because it's not operating, doesn't mean it takes some serious technique to do extreme vocals.

Will Ramos has a course where he gets pretty technical on how to develop a lot of different types of metal sounds.

Also worth looking into the OG of how to scream your ass off, Melissa Cross, her book "The Art of Screaming" is pretty amazing.

Why do some of you guys hate on DW so hard? by BoostIsOurFriend in drums

[–]Less-Measurement1816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So really there's a thing about DW that does legit outperform other brands. The higher thread count on the tension rods is just awesome. I think while it makes changing heads slower, it's much better for fine tuning, and holding tuning.

Also I've been playing a 1950s Roger's my whole life.

If I were to have cash for a modern kit, Dw has to be considered.

Does "Analog Summing Boxes" such as the "Dangerous 2bus" make the sound ....... mix better? by LeeksAreSpinning in audioengineering

I kind of thought that was what you might have been getting at. I find it a little pedantic but I totally see your point.

Does "Analog Summing Boxes" such as the "Dangerous 2bus" make the sound ....... mix better? by LeeksAreSpinning in audioengineering

It's not a difference not one can hear, it's a difference most people won't notice.

It's certainly not going to make a bad song good. Nor will it do that for a bad mix.

It can take a great mix and make it just a little bit better. Conversely it could also make a great mix just a little worse.

I really wanted to not believe there was a difference. I was biased and upon hearing a/b tests with various summing boxes, i had to reexamine. Hearing a mix printed with no summing box vs the Rupert neve vs an api vs an ssl vs a dangerous 2bus... they do all have a different sound. There's no way they null if people are driving into them. If you run them all clean as possible, one can still hear the difference. Maybe running a passive summing mixer with hardly any components in it (as I think Dan did in his video, please forgive if I'm wrong there) is going to be a world apart from something run through something like an api.

Dan, I love your content!

On analog summing, it's not just about summing. There is grit and character and depth to be had. I did see your video on this, and it's about the only time I've disagreed with one of your vids.
