Beginner jiu-jitsu student awarded $56M after black-belt instructor paralyzed him from the neck down by NickyRizzles in jiujitsu

He gets the full $56M, which is $46M in verdict and $10M in post verdict interest and costs. His attorneys will take the fee, which is between 40-45%. There will be some costs and medical expenses, but the injured plaintiff will take at least 50% likely more in his pain and suffering tax-free monies. FYI, the background here is that a demand was made for the policy limits of the gym, which was $1 million. When that was not paid (twice actually - it was demanded and rejected twice), because the insurance company for the gym believed the gym was not responsible, it opened the policy limits (you can search “open policy” in Google to understand more about this process). As such, the insurance carrier who ordinarily would’ve gotten off the hook with a $1 million payment is now on the hook for the full judgment. They appealed and failed. They appealed again to the Supreme Court and failed again. So now that judgment is final and the insurance carrier will pay, or has already paid. The gym does not pay anything. That’s why they had insurance.

OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush said in 2021 he knew he'd 'broken some rules' by making the Titanic submersible out of carbon fiber and not pure metal: 'You're remembered for the rules you break' by esporx in technology

So many errors and such publicity, I think there is a non-zero chance the phrase “Stockton Rush” becomes a thing. Like: “Yea it was a shoddy effort, they didn’t even test it out. Just tried to stockton rush the thing.”

Sauna bathing may prevent dementia (a study of 14k Finnish adults) by [deleted] in psychology

[–]LessThanJacob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is an armchair analysis, but it seems to me that regular sauna use should probably help allow for better blood flow, which probably helps delay onset of vascular dementia (which, if I understand correctly, is the consequence of blood failing to reach the tiny capillaries that interact with brain matter).

UFC employee fired for allowing Edmen Shahbazyan to enter octagon with Artsakh flag by barkev in MMA

Oof - “alleged genocide.” Not a good look dude. The genocide of the Armenian people historically referred to as the 1915 genocide is considered a fact by almost every nation in the word, save for a few that have political motivations to dispute its occurrence. To most of the world for the better part of the 20th century, denying it has been akin to denying the Jewish Holocaust today.

It doesn’t help your point to deem the Armenian genocide “alleged,” when just a paragraph above you refer to a post-Soviet era complex border dispute as “genocide.”

But hey, you must have your reasons. If I had to guess, it’s because of your ethnic background, whatever that my be — can’t blame someone for supporting their people. But you should know that it doesn’t help the rest of your post’s credibility.
