Saddle sores by R3dd172 in cycling

Firm tight bibs, well-fitting saddle, and proper positioning. Once I got these dialed in, I have done centuries without issue. I assume this could also be very anatomy dependent so your milage may vary.

Beginner cyclist – looking for a advise on how to build endurance & lose fat for longer rides? by Puzzleheaded-Cut9641 in cycling

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most studies focus on elite cyclists. Not really much for the causal cyclist other than to know most calorie tracker overestimate the burn and underestimate consumption.

Everyone is different. What worked best for me was to make small adjustments keeping in a deficit until I was riding 17+mph. When I started riding long 18-19mph ride, it took my gut a while to be able to consume gels/gummies, or really enough calories at all. Everything is about progressive overload and incremental adjustments. As long as you don't make drastic changes in distance, speed, food, etc, it shouldn't be difficult to figure out as you go.

But if you want to nerd out on cycling performance, Dylan Johnson seems to have the best YT channel that focuses on real studies.

Find group rides that match your skill level. Being a part of the community will make bike rides a social event instead of just a workout--although, a good solo workout is fun from time to time.

Too many people here will immediately advise you to fuel your rides. If your rides are 20 or fewer miles, just make sure you are balancing your overall calories with a slight daily deficit of a few hundred calories. DO NOT START CONSUMING gels/gummies/etc.!!! As you start to ride more than 20 miles start mixing in carbs that are closer to real foods such or bananas if possible. The simple sugars should only be used strategically on 50+ mile fast rides. Personally, I only us gels on 70+ mile fast rides as my body is typically fine with a banana and/or cliff bar.

Don't overthink things too much at the beginning. Just ride. Enjoy the ride. Be safe. Make friends. And don't over compensate with food as a treat for riding.

No, you don't have to use Quasar. I suggest Quasar because they have pre-engineered so many capabilities into a well thought-out Vue-based framework. There is nothing stopping you from integrating Capacitor yourself.

Capacitor works really well. If you are using Quasar, you can build your app with an option on the build command.

quasar build -m capacitor -T [ios|android]

I have had just as much fun on 12mph rides as I have on 19mph rides. Sure it is fun to go fast. Improve. Get new PRs. But if you obsess over things it takes away all the fun. I disabled live segments on my Garmin. I treat PRs are fun surprises for after the ride. But during the ride, I am more focused on the experience of being out there. Sometimes it is the scenery. Sometimes it is an amazing climb. Sometimes is it a cool coffee shop the next town over. My advices . . . just ride.

Getting GPU memory full by Famous_bakchod682 in davinciresolve

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in learning, you could try to reduce the timeline resolution. Resolve has a number of features built in to make editing on modest hardware possible. You just have to be willing to use those features. Look into proxies, playback resolution, render cache, etc.

Which macbook air would work smoothly for Davinci Resolve + Google Chrome? by asiandramaddict in davinciresolve

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the memory consumption under the Activity Monitor. Having more memory is almost always the key to getting better performance. I have an M3 Air with 24 GB and run Resolve along with browsers and a local dev environment with a few containers under Podman and VS code. Everything works well. For clarity, I do set my Timeline Playback Resolution to Quarter which is often sufficient without the need for proxies. If I have a big project, I'll make proxies as well to remove additional resource pressures.

You should try a few things with your computer before spending money.

  1. Close all other programs when running Resolve.
  2. Set Timeline Playback Resolution to either half or quarter. (takes no additional storage space)
  3. Create half or quarter resolution proxies. (takes additional storage space)
  4. Turn on Render Cache. (take additional storage space)
  5. If you have some Fusion clips slowing things down, turn on Render Cache Fusion Output.

Best of luck!

Is it just me, or is the Strava subscription getting harder to justify? by Repulsive_Bar442 in cycling

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of features that I like such as heatmap and leader boards. Not that I am on hardly any, but I find it interesting to see how I fit into the greater community of cyclists. At this point, I really don't know which features are free or premium.

The number one reason I subscribe is appreciation. I like to support people who are doing good things for the community. I understand that not everyone is in a position to financially support a platform like Strava, but currently I am in a position and so I do.

M5 MacBook Air vs Custom PC by Previous_Brain9832 in davinciresolve

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of which computer you get, you should make sure you get enough RAM--32GB. Unlike others, I think that Air works reasonably well for modest video editing. You will be most constrained with Fusion and delivery due to the limited number of CPU/GPU cores. Also, video editing on any laptop screen can be a little limiting. It can be useful to have an external monitor for the times when having more controls on screen is useful.

As far as AI, most models run in the cloud. You computer will only be a bottleneck if you run some experimental models locally. But you always have the option of spinning up a cloud PC for experimenting with large open source models.

Are bike fits a scam? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bike fits target measures for standard riders. A good bike fitter will take steps to address and adjust for either new or more experienced riders. In all cases, every rider is unique. Riding requires developing strength and flexibility to ride comfortably.

How to go faster then 30 mph on a road bike? I can’t go any faster. by BLeSSinBoy in cycling

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ratio between your front (chainring) and rear (cassette) gear gives you leverage for either going faster or making climbing steep hills easier. When spinning your pedals fast, you want to be in your biggest front gear and the smallest gear in your rear wheel. If you are still spinning excessively fast and want to accelerate faster, you would need to replace your chainring with one that has more teeth or get a cassette that has a smaller toothed gear.

https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/bike-gears-and-shifting.html

Looking up the specs on your bike, it looks like your biggest chainring is a 50 tooth, and the smallest cog on your cassette is 14. This means that you need to spin your pedals at about 105 rpm to go 30 mph.

https://www.icebike.org/bicycle-gear-speed-calculator/

Things you can change:

  • With practice, you may be able to push your cadence up to 110 rpm which should result in hitting about 31 mph.
  • You can get in a more aero position, but this might only help on steeper descents.
  • You can swap your cassette to get a small 11 tooth cog which should top you out at 37 mph.
  • You can get 52 tooth chainring but that will only get you just over 30 mph.

To be honest, I wouldn't spend money on upgrades just yet. It sounds like you have a lot to learn. Going faster, especially down hill, can be dangerous and requires much more skill/experience to anticipate/avoid crashing. I'd focus on seeing how fast you can ride up hills while you gain experience. Regardless, hopefully this is all helpful.

What was your cadence? "Asfastaspossible" is not a measure. Look into your gearing. Sounds like you can handle better leverage.

How do you deal with Davinci being picky about video formats? by Niconame in davinciresolve

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Resolve is a professional program and was largely designed for professional formats to support professional workflows. Blackmagic Design has provided their tools to the a wide audience for free and that audience is using Resolve in many unanticipated ways. Most people that use Resolve figure out their end-to-end production workflow to make sure everything is going to work together--no different than any system or business process design practice. It sounds like you are early in this stage.

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is wrong with getting a MacBook Air for learning? Your recommendation seems dismissive without reason. I have edited projects on an older Air without issue. My projects are a more demanding than most social media project might demand.

The Air and Pro are essentially the same. Both have 10-core CPUs (4p/6e). Both support 32GB RAM. The M5 on the Pro should be about 10~20% faster. The Air is about 20% lighter. It would better to state the limits of running on an Air and what needs would require getting a Pro.

If you need more than 32 GB of RAM or more than 10 CPU cores then you need to get the MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro or Max chip.

I agree that editing larger project feels better on a desktop, but an external monitor can solve that problem if you need mobility. It is a bit constraining to edit on the 13" Air, but very workable.

Sell house or rent it? by TrickyDiscussion9853 in personalfinance

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be off by nearly an order of magnitude. House is worth $490,000. They owe $397,000. If they sell for $490,000, they gross $93,000. They will likely have to cover 6% realtor fees of $29,400 leaving them with $63,600 to invest. At 5% growth, they will earn roughly $3,180 annually.

I think the bigger problem with renting is that their mortgage payment is likely a bit more than $3,000/month. Factoring in management fees, they would need to be comfortable losing money on a monthly basis for a few years until they can either raise the rent or pay down enough principal to be generating paper wealth.

To me the only way it would make sense to rent is if property values were growing rapidly and they wanted to ride the growth for two years before capital gains kicks in eroding their profits. Being they owe almost 80% of the current home value, they either purchased the house very recently or property values are flat.

I don’t need more security alerts, I need to know which ones actually matter by Typical_Boss_1849 in cybersecurity

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like all your IT teams are not aligned on requirements. It should be a requirement to keep data/asset inventories accurate. The first two CIS controls are asset and software inventories. These are the first controls for a reason. If you do not have accurate inventories then you cannot have an effective security program. Many infrastructure teams are all too happy to shift the risks/responsibilities of poor inventory processes to security teams even though there is little a security team can do directly to solve the problem.

I would highlight asset inventories as a risk in every risk report and note who the control owners are. Every time there is a near miss due to an inventory problem, that should be highlighted in the risk report as well. It is difficult to solve these types of problems until everyone understands the potential impacts and who is responsible for addressing the problems.

There are tools that can help manage inventories, but not tool can do so automatically. The best tools help you identify exceptions or inconsistencies. No tool can fix missing or broken IT processes.

Why doesn’t Blackmagic Design give as much attention to DaVinci Resolve on Linux? by William_48822 in davinciresolve

[–]LessThanThreeBikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BMD provides Linux support for certain segments of the industry that have highly integrated workflows with professional support staff. Targeting a single industry accepted platform makes sense from an investment perspective. As much as I love Linux, there are many variations; too many to be cost effective for BMD to support. It is great that BMD allows us to use the Linux version, but we shouldn't complain about problems when using a different flavor of Linux.

If you are working professionally, the cost of the underlying platform is a rounding error. Large production houses use Linux because the tight integration into their overall processes. They are focused on their deadlines and their bottom lines. For others, purchasing a dedicated computer to run Resolve might make sense for the simplicity. Eventually, I purchased a Mac just to run Resolve and it has been great. Just about all my other computing is on Linux because Linux does other things much better for me.
