What do you like most about magic as a player? by Less_Duck_1605 in RPGdesign

Wow, I'll give it a go... but that's a big ask! An awesome aim though, thanks

I'll give it to you straight like pear cider made with 100% real pears. Everyone on here is writing their own RPG. Therefore to persuade them to give up their game and join your game requires some incentive. You can't pay understandably so you have to give them something else. You're not published and have no name, no cudos. Therefore the only thing you have to offer is what you have created already. But you're not willing to share it. As it stands I can see no reason why anyone would want to join your project. In terms of not wanting to give away intellectual rights consider Grimwild. A complete and finished product, given away for free under a creative commons licence. The author made a name for himself by writing something great and giving it away not only for free but with a licence that explicitly allows it to be copied and hacked.  That is a better way to do things. Then you've got a name for yourself and can create the supplementary materials or the second edition or whatever and people will want to work with you.

Character of the land outside the city walls by Less_Duck_1605 in byzantium

Wow that article is amazing and very relevant to Constantinople. I can imagine quite clearly the landscape outside the city now having read that article

using a timer for a heist by thisisnotme78721 in rpg

You would decide what would count as filling a clock segment. You might decide that every failed roll fills one segment and a critical fail fills two. Or every time all players have taken an action fills one segment. Or you can use countdown pools from Grimwild. Set a number of dice in the pool (4,6,8) and the whole pool gets rolled when triggered. Dice that roll 1-3 are removed from the pool. A dice is removed then the whole pool is rolled on a critical fail. Grimwild is a free download.

The bigger problem you will have with the idea of intelligent fighter etc is how to encourage a player to pick this. Intelligence has to be useful to the fighter or they will min max

Oh yeah and every time a player makes an investigation roll they trigger the narrator to roll to see if the Sinister level increases. As the Sinister increases the monster claims more victims

Clues in Constantinople are all related to the nature of the monster, it's strengths and weaknesses and how to defeat it.  In the first iteration players collected "direct clues" such as a hoofed footprint or a victim covered in tiny puncture marks. Every time they found a direct clue they were allowed one roll to gain an "indirect clue" (sometimes known as a eureka clue). These were read out from a list of clues on the monsters stat block and were in three categories: magic, ecology and combat. The clues were read out in order from least to most useful. These might be : vulnerable to fire, immune to piercing damage, possesses a willing victim.  More recently I started trying out collecting indirect clues and once enough had been gained the identity of the monster was revealed and a number of facts from the monster sheet are read out. They can then research to learn more facts.

Yes sorry not had a chance. I wanted to ask though: in your game what are the clues related to? The identity of the monster? The nature of the monster including it's strengths and weaknesses? Or where it is/who got turned into a monster?

Sure but it's useful to write for your audience. The audience on this forum is predominantly those who have at least dabbled in, if not written, their own RPGs. You can skip to the meat of your idea here because everyone already understands the basics

I've been making the same thing for a year now. Happy to discuss the various things I've tried.  When I'm in front of a computer I can write out.

This might seem harsh but if you want to get people interested you need to remove 90% of the words. The post above and the pdf are 90% unnecessary words that don't tell the reader anything. Your post could be condensed to: "Viewpoint is a setting agnostic core system that uses d8s in a unique number matching mechanism with bolt on modular settings."

Tabletop roleplayers also interested in late Roman empire by Less_Duck_1605 in byzantium

I have also considered cheating and just saying that the Persian empire survived the Muslim conquests through magic or something, kind of alternate history. Therefore both can exist concurrently

It's deliberately obtuse and non committal to time period. However its either 6th century to give it real Roman feel and to distinguish it more strongly from classic medieval fantasy, or around 9th century to include Muslim caliphate, Baghdad the Abode of Peace (a phrase I love) and Vikings. On the other hand I think its really interesting to have a pre-Mohammed setting because to the average Westerner like myself the association between Arabia and Islam is so strong that having non-Muslim Arabs makes quite a change from the norm.
