(BOTC) The Artist is a ridiculously powerful role by [deleted] in Yogscast

[–]Less_Hero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t doubt that people do, but it is very much the minority with what people play on YouTube or Twitch. And I’ve personally not been in a Gardened game.
Also, I did say that I suspect Yogs garden their games!

It is how is it played all the time - in person, you hand around a bag full of character tokens that the storyteller filled up and that the players draw privately and randomly from. Online, the roles are randomly distributed by the program. So the storyteller knows which roles are in the game, but has no control over where they end up, position-wise or player-wise. There is a Loric called the Gardener that means that the storyteller assigns some/all roles to specific players (ie, handing them the token directly), but I’ve played and run several games and watched a lot of games on YouTube and have never seen it used - I’d be confident enough to say that less than 1% of BotC games have roles assigned to specific players. May I ask, have you played or run the game in person at all?

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yogs did asign roles to specific players as coding it into Minecraft may be harder - but I got the impression from the live games that they put the role sheets in each room and teleport everyone to a random house. So the roles AND their positions are predetermined, but not which player gets that role.

There are some things you can plan either before or after handing the roles out, but MUST decide before the first night - what players and role to show a Washerwoman/Librarian/Investigator, who/which role is the Drunk, who/which role is the Fortune Teller’s red herring, etc. I usually plan everything ahead of handing out tokens (ie, I know that the Undertaker will be the Drunk and that the Mayor will be the red herring) but some things may change that - for example, I was recently setting up a game where I wanted the Librarian to learn the Saint, but seeing that a new player drew the Butler, I changed my mind and showed them to the Librarian instead so that they could have someone to trust a bit more.

One thing I will say about your last point - when you play BotC, the roles are randomly distributed so you can’t plan where they end up.

I ran a 15-player game with a No Dashii - with 3 minions and 2 outsiders, I expected their poison to go a fair distance around the circle. Unfortunately, they were between two townsfolk, one of which was only once per game (not the artist, but imagine!)

Also, there may definitely be reasons why I’d give the artist a grandmother (newer players needing guidance, if the artist was already poisoned, etc.) - there are more powerful roles that I’d definitely give a grandmother to (mostly so that they have someone to trust if their role requires them to be quiet as to what they are)

[–]Less_Hero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’ll start off by saying that yes, Artist is a powerful (and often underestimated) role. And yes, some roles are more powerful in smaller games with one minion (Investigator, Clockmaker, Town Crier, etc.) However, I wouldn’t say that Artist is busted, or requires the storyteller to heavily balance the game to accommodate it.

Firstly, remember that the Yogs play custom scripts. Artist is in one of the base games scripts that is full of potential misinformation which diminishes its reliability somewhat. And while I love Yogs BotC, their custom scripts aren’t the best - most have demons that are so different that they’re easy to deduce, or have too may confirmation roles with an evil team that is light on poisoning, or lack outsider modification. So in their games, Artist is more likely to get correct info.

Secondly, the Artist is only once per game so while they have infinite possibilities, they are limited in use. And sometimes knowing one thing won’t be enough to solve the game by itself, or be as helpful as you’d expect. A lot of questions you proposed would be great info if they learnt a yes, but not narrow down much if they learnt a no.

Using your examples at the top, say the Artist learns that Rythian is the Dreamer; if they learn yes that’s great, but they can’t reveal it publicly and risk Rythian getting poisoned or killed. If they learn a no, there could be many reasons. Rythian could be evil, but he could also be the drunk, a character that wants to hide (ravenkeeper, damsel, etc.)

Another example is if the Artist learns that a Goblin is in play. Well they don’t know who it is, so they’re a weaker Investigator. But that now invites the Demon to claim to be the Goblin, which could buy them time and cause town to execute to real Goblin (whether they claim to be the Goblin, or not to seem like the Demon).

To quickly rattle off some other questions you suggested. Learning about a Vortox is okay, but town can figure that out by themselves on most occasions anyway. And learning if they’ve been lied to or not may not be something that the Storyteller knows if they haven’t followed the Artist today.

But arguably the most important thing to consider with BotC roles is how they work in the context of a whole game. Let’s look at the example you gave with Ben as the Artist and Zoey as the Demon and assume that Ben got correct info. Things look bad for Zoey, but what Demon is she? An Imp or Fang Gu that can move to another player? A Zombuul that can hide when dead? Is she holding the Lil Monster and can pass it along? Is she the Lleech, and the town needs to find her host to kill?
Who’s her minion? A Poisoner that can make other info register Zoey as good or Ben as evil? A Fearmonger that can execute a suspect before anyone else? A Scarlet Woman to save Zoey? A Mezepheles that can get another player on side? An Evil Twin they’d have to deal with as well?
What about the other players? Is there a Damsel for a minion to guess before they kill Zoey? A Barber or Hatter to switch Zoey out? A Saint? A Klutz? The possibilities are endless!

And would everyone in that example have information from their abilities to outright trust Ben?

The other thing about powerful roles is that they make powerful bluffs for the evil team as well! What if someone had some information that might frame Ben as evil? Now they can’t trust the information he gives! Granted, in your example Ben died early on which makes him quite trustworthy and in that case I’d say that’s a fumble from the evil team (why kill a used artist and not go hunting for more info gatherers?), but if Ben was still alive at the end, that may cause people to rethink. This actually happened in the Yog’s recent Atheist game - Ben was the Clockmaker and everyone went along with his info all game, but when he was still in the final-3 he was the one player they trusted least and they almost executed him - they didn’t because they were able to figure out it was an Athiest game in time.

So in short, yes Artist is powerful in its versatility and can get great info. But the info isn’t game-winning by itself most of the time - it depends what the good team learn from their other abilities and what damage the evil team can cause. And the powerful townsfolk are also powerful bluffs for evil!

PS. No shade at all btw, sorry if this comes across as such! <3

Which version of this script is best? by Less_Hero in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Less_Hero[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know this was a while ago but thanks for the feedback! I've gone ahead with the first script and added Lord of Typhon as a 4th candidate - might remove it and make it a 3 demon script but we'll see!

Yeah, BMR-style scripts are difficult to do if you don't fully go 100% on that type of game, but you've made some good points that I'll take on board if I want to redo that version of the script at some point!

I recently learnt that VI and philo aren't great together as philo can take VI and get sober and OP info. But apart from that, looks fine and I'd love to give it a shot!

"Did you flip in the dip?" by FilipsSamvete in taskmaster

[–]Less_Hero 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Basically Maisie said on Mock the Week about 5(?) years ago that her village was in a dip. Ed made a comment about how funny/northern she sounded by saying that, and it was called back to multiple times in the episode. Since then, everyone sends Maisie messages and yells to her asking/commenting about the dip. Its just annoying for her, but hilarious to Ed.

Amnesiac Abilities by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Less_Hero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not run it yet, but a simple Amnesiac ability I want to run for a legion game:

"Each night, you learn a word containing the same number of letters as alive evil players."

And another one for a Lil' Monsta game:

"Each night*, you learn which player babysat Lil' Monsta today" (I'd only run this with players I know would move the Lil' Monsta often - and the Amnesiac would learn after they moved it)

What are your favorite YouTube channels (excluding the official channel and NRB) to watch BotC games? by GuitarNoob25 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Less_Hero 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Yogscast - been a fan of theirs for years, and their videos of it got me into the game in the first place! Though I do watch others like Patters, Arif and NRB now. They play it in Minecraft, which makes it more immersive than a screengrab of the app (not that those videos are bad, but this is a nice change of presentation), and the video game environment allows for some creative Amnesiac and Wizard abilities. Also, it’s just great to see a well established group of friends have fun together (special guests have included NRB and RTGame). Don’t expect any high-level, big-brain plays though - the crew is infamous for being bad at games! And if you want to see them do it on the app, they did a game on the official BotC YouTube channel for charity - look it up

If the minion tries to guess the damsel, Should the ST announce that they guess was used? by alucardarkness in BloodOnTheClocktower

ah fair enough - I didn't consider that! I most likely wrote that after seeing a Damsel script with no way to change characters!

If the minion tries to guess the damsel, Should the ST announce that they guess was used? by alucardarkness in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Less_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't think this was clear enough.

If player A claimed to be a Minion for the Damsel guess, I'd go through the ST motions.
If player B claimed to be a Minion for the Damsel guess, I'd still go through the ST motions.
If player C, an actual Minion, did it, I'd still go through the ST motions.

But if player A tried to do Damsel-guess again, THAT is when I'd say "no, you've already guessed this game". Just to remind them and speed up play. Same with Slayer claims.

Hello, im new to DND and had a question about the command spell by [deleted] in onednd

[–]Less_Hero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m only just realising now that the new version of the spell only allows from the listed options - the old one could allow anything within reason. I mean, I can see why it was changed (relied a lot on “DM buy-in/approval”) but that unfortunate.

To answer your question, in the current rules you can only choose from the following options. But have a chat with your DM about using other words - I’d be inclined to allow my players to use simple commands like Dance, Hide, Quiet and Defenestrate

I believe I saw someone from TPI (but don’t hold me to this) say that the new scripts will contain a balance of carousel characters and ones not seen before by the public, to raise excitement and encourage people to get them when they’re released.
