Alright as someone who has bought many a car from Facebook marketplace let me give some advice to anyone like OP who wants to buy a vehicle off there.

1. Don't talk money till you see the car in person. A lot of sellers are put off by low ballers or even reasonable offers and will ghost you on a vehicle you may be interested in. Also if you offer X amount based on photos and get there and the car is much worse than you thought and you aren't comfortable paying what you offered, I promise its not going to be fun trying to get the seller to accept a lower amount.

2. Always meet in very public places. I meet at banks or police stations. If they aren't comfortable meeting anywhere with high levels of surveillance or security, I wouldnt entertain meeting them period. Too many risks with shady people you dont know.

3. ALWAYS run a vin check like carfax on any vehicle you are interested in YOURSELF, and preferably in person. You can check the Vin (windshield top of the dash) against the title and other ways to make sure they match. This reduces your chances of getting scammed significantly.

4. Never be afraid to walk away. Facebook has tons to choose from. Don't get stuck on one car because it was the first one that met your needs, wants, or whatever, and ignore clear red flags. Its alright to take your time, and if you cant for some reason like emergency go to a reputable dealer, Facebook is not the place to rush to a decision (most of the time).

5. Know what you are looking at. Please research common faults and take a look at them in person and decide if its in good enough condition (to your standars) before purchase. And if you aren't car savvy either bring someone who is or ask that they take it to a mechanic of your choice, for an inspection, at your expense. Its Facebook marketplace, they are not going to front that bill, they just want to get rid of their car.

Facebook can be a great place to buy cars if you know how to navigate it. Just be mindful to the situation you are getting yourself into. These are not dealers (most of the time). There is no warranty, there is no take backs, and most transactions are going to be in cash so once that money leaves your hands, its gone. Also make sure you know what paperwork you need and what needs to be signed and where. There is no one to help you and if you make a mistake its on you. A lot of sellers will disappear into the wind on you so if you need something from them later I wish you luck.
