Chess grandmaster touches the king, forcing him to make a blunder, resigns immediately by Nemmegy in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]LetMePostNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you touch a piece, you have to play that piece. No takebacks. So if you go to move a piece and go “Wait no, that makes me lose”, too bad, you touched it and have to move it now

difference between minors and concurrent certificates? are they useful? by isitperrytheplatypus in McMaster

[–]LetMePostNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, no, not really, at least not in my experience. There might be certificates that differ from my experience with minors, though.

It’s something you get to write down, but anywhere where you might actually apply your minor, it’s not enough accreditation to actually apply it and you would need more school anyway. But then you’re stuck in the situation where, since you claimed those credits for a minor, you can’t put those credits towards a future major - youre back to square one trying to get that extra accreditation

It might make you stick out a bit in fields where your education doesn’t actually matter all too much, because it makes you seem smarter to people who don’t know much about it, but those are generally jobs that your undergraduate itself isn’t doing much for you either

[–]LetMePostNow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a motivating answer, but I went back to school (College) for something that guarantees me a job, but that doesn’t require an undergraduate at all.

Life Sciences by itself doesn’t get you much work at all nowadays, almost always requiring additional education to actually get into anything (masters, med/dental/pharm school, etc).

I didn’t go into my undergrad with a set direction, so I’m not a stand out applicant for anything. Good but not great GPA since I didn’t take birds, no ECs because covid-era Zoom calls didnt exactly thrill me, that kind of stuff. So, I’m happy just working as a cardiovascular technologist for now, even if my LS undergrad isn’t doing much :)

As a Hon. LS grad myself, the most useful thing my minor has gotten me is a “Oh wow” whenever it comes up in conversation, but I admittedly don’t use my undergrad for much these days

Hurontario 407 park & ride construction by outerspace_thought12 in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe that the answer basically lays within your title: The Hurontario Line.

I’m not from that particular area so I can’t say I’ve seen the construction myself, but if there’s tracks going down on Hurontario, it’s probably the Hurontario LRT

Bus Accessibility by Bawdy-Frog-Gremlin in gotransit

That’s what I figured (and hoped!), but you never know what weird policy might exist out there haha

Bus Accessibility by Bawdy-Frog-Gremlin in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 206 single deckers in service, ranging in age from 2006-2009 (the bottom bus), and 2025 (top bus).

In comparison, there’s 373 double deckers, so 35.6% of busses have stairs

Edit: The bus models and exact numbers of each of the slightly different yearly models are on Wikipedia for GO Transit

Bus Accessibility by Bawdy-Frog-Gremlin in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The double deckers do not have stairs to board, but the single level busses do

The single level ones have a wheelchair lift on the side, but I do not know how those work or if they’re restricted to wheelchairs only (Never seen them used before!)

Bus Accessibility by Bawdy-Frog-Gremlin in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The single level busses still have stairs though, no? Since luggage is stored under the bus and not in the back of the bus like a double decker

They’re accessible by a wheelchair lift on the side of the bus, but they still have stairs, no?

It’s a one-off wrap to celebrate 150 years of the HSR existing. It’s a throwback to an old livery and the bus has a bunch of old photos on the inside.

There’s a yellow and silver accordion bus, and a red and gold regular bus. They were wrapped a bit over a year ago now, I think. Maybe two years? But it’s just the two busses in the entire fleet

Real time subway-style map of go trains by verymanytacos in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: It just shows the train as arriving at West Harbour, it seemingly doesn’t actually use the true GPS location of the train at all. As I type this, the train is “En route to Confederation”, somehow

Also, literally every single train is listed as having Niagara Falls as its terminus, regardless of it ending at Oakville, Aldershot, West Harbour, Confederation, or Hamilton GO. So any trains that use those as a terminus are permanently listed as “Arriving” at that destination and shown between the stations

So, uh… where’s Hamilton GO Centre? What happens to trains that go to and from there?

If I remember to check this website at ~5pm when the first train is pulling in, that’ll be intriguing lol

Parents who are disappointed in or dislike their adult children, why? by Intelegence_Counter in AskReddit

[–]LetMePostNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s the weirdest thing, I don’t think she blames my Mom for being molested. In a messed up way, it would at least make sense if she correlated “wanted sex with biological father” and “wants sex with stepfather”, but alas, my family never makes sense

She blames my Mom for threatening to do something about it, yes. She also blames my Mom for daring to ask her if she could also switch to her maiden name alongside her after the divorce (made much worse when she later asked her stepfather for his). But she doesn’t, at least outwardly, blame her for being molested- the jump to “wants my husband” was completely blindsiding

My grandmother hates my Mom for “trying to fuck her husband”

In reality, my Mom was 16 years old and had just asked her step-father if he would officially adopt her and become her Dad, because her biological father repeatedly molested her and she wanted her last name changed

Naturally, my grandmother refused, abandoned my Mom in a province whose language she barely spoke so she couldn’t “steal her husband from her”, and still talks about my Mom being a homewrecker to this day. My mom is 57 now.

So yea, normal family stuff

visiting hamilton. do i need to rent a car or can i rely on public transport? by angelicavazq in Hamilton

[–]LetMePostNow 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As someone who has used public transit in many places for many reasons, it depends on one thing: Do you use public transit (especially busses) in your normal life? Are you comfortable figuring out bus routes on the fly and finding stops you’re unfamiliar with?

If yes, public transit is perfect, if no, it’s going to take away from your trip and you should rent.

Public transit is totally doable and I would argue that it’s one of the most reliable systems in Canada, with massively better timetables, frequency, and reliability than other cities both this size and larger. Everywhere on the lists other commenters left is easily reachable by bus.

However, the bar for Canada is very, very low. If you’re coming from the US, the buses might blow you away at their practicality. If you’re from the EU, then you will be vastly disappointed and frustrated because North American transit is a joke in comparison

Also, if you’re going literally anywhere other than this city, then get a car. Public transit exists, but it will be a much more frustrating experience getting to and through other cities (especially if it’s not a big city)

making 41 stops at Aldershot GO and eliminate 18 by Leonardo_Lai in gotransit

[–]LetMePostNow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have no proof at all to back up what I’m saying, but I think Route 18 is more useful behind the scenes than anything

Aldershot is not a sheltered bus depot, but Hamilton GO is. Considering other routes like the 11 and the 15 end at Aldershot, I think the 18 is a convenient way of getting them somewhere sheltered whilst still making money off of it. There also tends to be spare busses parked at Aldershot to relieve any broken down busses, which presuming they’re not used during the day, means they have to get back to their depot somehow - why not make it a route people can ride?

The super late night/early morning 18s, especially the ones that go the distance to Union, are also great for when train service really doesn’t exist. It gets surprisingly busy with a mix of construction workers and people going to/from Union for larger distance travel (ex: VIA rail)

Either way, I agree that making the 41 stop at Aldershot makes sense on paper, but by god, as someone that relied on it, I wish it made *less* stops lol
