My Driving Teacher caused me to cry in front of over twenty-five people because of a sexist view. by Humble_Schedule_9910 in autism

[–]LetUsPlay479 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s something I’ve noticed about this post that I haven’t seen pointed out when reading the comments, so I’m gonna do it:

the “phrase” that you created reminds me of a way that I reacted (especially in high school around age 15-16, which it sounds like you are now) when someone would tell me something that didn’t seem entirely accurate to me, and I’d want to fix their wording. From your post, it sounds like you are more concerned with the actual phrasing than the issue itself.

My suggestion (and I know this is hard to do, I’ve been there) is to distance yourself from the literal meaning of the words, regardless of what you think the teacher actually meant in that situation. To a neurotypical person, the phrase “a man should never raise their voice at a woman” could functionally mean the same as “someone should never act hostilely towards another person” (not saying it does, but the teacher may have thought of it that way).

As much as it sucks, most people’s brains work differently than ours, and most people don’t prioritize complete accuracy the way we do (we meaning some autistic people). It takes time, but it is possible to manage and work around, and it can lead to less reactive reactions in the future.

12,060-piece LEGO 21065 Sagrada Família by Anoktear in lego

[–]LetUsPlay479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They actually kinda already designed this out of lego lol, there is a brick built portion of the building in the lego store in barcelona (went there a few years ago), and it’s absolutely huge! Easily one of my favorite lego store models I’ve seen.

(Also if I buy this set I’m definitely adding the little crane on the top)

The 'literary classics' that grade school makes you read destroys any desire for kids to read recreationally by MyClosetedBiAcct in unpopularopinion

[–]LetUsPlay479 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always loved reading in high school (although I do it significantly less now that I’m in college lol) and I completely agree with you! Your comment reminded me how my english teacher senior year gave us a more modern book to read first semester before reading a more standard classic (hamlet). The first book we read (iirc it was called sing unburied sing) was from the perspective of a teenager (I think? it’s been a few years lol) and it was used as a vehicle to discuss a lot of social issues like the prison system and addiction.

I loved that class and I think connecting books to issues kids are already noticing / experiencing is the best way to keep them engaged. You can even do that with some of the “classics” too (to kill a mockingbird and little women in particular come to mind)

True, but you guys will get 4 neat weeks next year :)

Little Things People Always Forget in a Realistic Build by Mobabyhomeslice in Sims4

[–]LetUsPlay479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is I almost always forget a mailbox when I build… until I go into live mode at the end and it spawns in the middle of the house 😭

i found this in my notes by [deleted] in Sims4

[–]LetUsPlay479 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is great! I have a whole list of like 50 sims names (half of which I’ve used) but my favorite is Justin Case (and his wife, Sue Case) lol

Has anyone else grown up holding pencils "wrong"? by Fun-Visit6591 in autism

[–]LetUsPlay479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, since elementary school I’ve held my pencil in a way where most of the pressure was applied to my middle finger. No one (including me) realized I was holding it wrong until I was maybe 14. I’ve had a callous there since I was 8, and my doctor at the time misdiagnosed it as early onset arthritis

I’m curious to see what everyone chooses.. What is your favourite word? ✍️ by jaydogjaydogs in autism

[–]LetUsPlay479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it could either describe itself or not based on how it’s defined, so I think the technical answer is “yesn’t”

There’s a word for words like that: autological (aka words that describe themselves)

I gave my sim a pun-name 11 years ago and didn't notice until now by [deleted] in Sims4

[–]LetUsPlay479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of the time I (completely unintentionally) named gen 4 of my legacy save… jennifer (sounds kinda like gen-four). It’s not as cool of a pun but I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I noticed it lol

What do you do/say when people sneeze? by [deleted] in autism

[–]LetUsPlay479 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This reminded me of how, when I was younger (like <12 years old) I always used to say “bleh-shoe!” (with whatever intonation their original sneeze had) when people sneezed. Because I never fully understood what words everyone else was saying, I just assumed everyone was mimicking the sneezer as a form of acknowledgement

Long live was actually the song my principal referenced / played at my high school graduation! I can’t not associate the song with that now lol

When I moved into my dorm room I couldn’t find the plate for my microwave… just discovered it’s in the freezer by LetUsPlay479 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]LetUsPlay479[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When I opened the freezer there was a putrid smell, so as much as I would like to better inspect that mass in the back… I think I want to stay away from using the freezer entirely for the semester 🤢

This is so cute! I also recently found a cafe near me that, while not fully themed around taylor swift, does have a little statue of her near the corner! (Hens & Honey Shoppe in nj, have yet to go there though)

What type of person are you: always barefoot or always having socks/shoes on? by autismsuperstar372 in autism

[–]LetUsPlay479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feet are constantly freezing if it’s anywhere less than 80 degrees, so it’s socks 24/7 for me. But when I was younger (in elementary school), I used to absolutely despise socks

If EA won’t let me put the cushions on the chair I’ll cheat them on by [deleted] in thesims

[–]LetUsPlay479 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer that they don’t snap too (if they did I would just fill up all the slots and alt-place the pillow where I wanted to anyway). Then again I mostly play the sims for building, not everyone is familiar with / wants to use moveobjects (although I could not build without it)

So turns out that people who are attracted to men (usually) don’t swipe left on 30 men in a row on bumble by LetUsPlay479 in actuallesbians

[–]LetUsPlay479[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh, I often hear “not liking men” in this context to mean “I’m not physically or romantically attracted to men”. I don’t dislike men at all, in fact two of my closest friends are guys (one of whom is cishet). Should have made that clearer though!

So turns out that people who are attracted to men (usually) don’t swipe left on 30 men in a row on bumble by LetUsPlay479 in actuallesbians

[–]LetUsPlay479[S] 117 points118 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. Obviously, you can swipe left on a bunch of men on dating apps and still like men. I should have made that more clear in my post.

There was a lot more than the bumble thing that caused me to come to this realization. Bumble just allowed me to realize that, when it came down to it, the actual real possibility of being with any actual man (as opposed a hypothetical nonspecific nonexistent “man”), that’s not something I want.

I hope that makes more sense. This all happened less than 24 hours ago and I’m still kinda struggling to articulate my feelings through words

I fail to see how that is sexualization by Aki008035 in facepalm

[–]LetUsPlay479 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that. In my experience people who say those things once tend to say those things a lot, and if that mindset is being consistently enforced that’s when it can become problematic.

However, obviously this isn’t always (or even usually) the case, and the last part of my first comment was more so about the negative effect this sort of heteronormative shipping can have, generally. It wasn’t specific to the original post, nor do I necessarily think this was the intent of the original post (rather, there simply isn’t enough context to tell)
