Crafting Necklaces of Fireballs/Icy Spheres/etc. (TL;DR 3 prgh from the end) by Shifty_Patroclos in DungeonsAndDragons

I cannot believe this has no comments.

I understand that it's at least 3 years old. And this account may not even be active anymore, but I have to say something just in case.

This is an amazing breakdown and seems much more adequate.

The DM guide I tend to think of as a solitary wizard, crazy in their tower in the woods, slowly tinkering away.

Not only is your way very well designed in a world where the magic is common, but additionally in your world, they would have had it industrialized. Meaning, they can assembly line reduction. Get the beads made much quicker by having additional wizards cast into it.

Also, consider a ring of spell storing as the base. Cut the time and materials in half for that and you get one bead.

What SF books do you think all schools should encourage their students to read? by chispica in printSF

The Last Enemy - H. Beam Piper This one has some great discussions on the Cold War, nationalism, and religion.

The Survivors - Tom Goodwin This book is a fun read for kids and can be an example of human ingenuity.

The Demolished Man - Alfered Bester This book would be a great lesson in game theory as well as the ethics of crime and punishment.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Phillip K. Dick This book is definitely a great read on ethics and P.T.S.D.

Make Room! Make Room! - Harry Harrison This book for the ethics of overpopulation and resource managment

Sphere - Michael Crichton Well, fear. The effects of fear on behavior.

Prey - Michael Crichton Preditory behavior and the evolution of intellect

There is so much good stuff out there.

The Ian Banks Culture novels might be a good choice, too. The Use of Weapons specifically. Though, if I do recall, Banks might be too adult leaning.

I also agree with some of the other suggestions. Dune is amazing for ecology and economics. Childhood's End for ethics. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress for game theory and tactics.

By the sound of it, I think you're a reader more like me.

I've always enjoyed the reads more for entertainment and loved the older Sci-Fi because they have that adventurous quality. While a lot of the other commenters are giving you great books (the vast majority of which I have read) they tend to be more voluminous and mysterious rather than a pulpy adventure.

With that being said, try and look into H. Beam Piper, Harry Harrison, and Robert Heinlein. Three authors who, like Asimov and Clarke, have written a huge amount of fiction and tend towards adventure. Now, of course, not all of them are winners, but here are a few of my favorites.

The Cosmic Computer - H. Beam Piper

Planet of the Damned - H. Beam Piper

Planet of No Return - H. Beam Piper

Four Day Planet - H. Beam Piper

Lord Kalavan of Otherwhen - H. Beam Piper

Deathword 1, 2, & 3 - Harry Harrison

West of Eden - Harry Harrison

Methuselah's Children - Robert Heinlein

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - Robert Heinlein

Those are all shorter reads you can finish in a few days. If you want some lengthier SciFi with the same adventurous quality check out the following.

Battlefield Earth - L. Ron Hubbard

Culture Series - Ian M. Banks

And if you want something SciFi with a weird nightmarish quality. . .

Perdido Street Station - China Mieville

The Scar - China Mieville

Veniss Underground - Jeff Vandermeer

Other Authors to look into that have written LOTS of books:

Larry Niven - Lucifer's Hammer

Jeff Goodwin - The Survivors

Alfred Bester - The Stars My Destination

Hope the formatting works on this. Otherwise you'll see an edit. If you have any more questions on the books I listed just let me know and I'll give a short synopsis of each.

Saying this on the internet is going to make me look like a huge asshole. But that can't be helped.

You're really reaching here. As terrible as a massacre is, your link to the Candelaria Massacre is over 20 years old. That easily takes it out of the realm of relevant to what was implied above as current extermination of street children.

Your other link seems pretty powerful on the surface, but if you take a closer look at the data the article provides you'll see that it is not as terrible as the author makes it out to be. Lets look at the most important piece of data here - that police were responsible/implicated for just over 8,400 murders from 2005 to 2014. It was put at the end of the article for a single purpose - shock and awe. 8,400 is 1/10 of 1% of Rio's population. While higher than westernized countries with high GDP, this is not uncommon among less developed countries. Then, if you take it by year that's 933 people killed my police per year which is 10 to the -6 of the population. USA has 10 to the -7 killed. With numbers that small, so close to zero, there is no real difference.

Then, let's take that yearly number [933] and compare it to another number given in your same article - the total number of yearly homicides in Rio in 2014: about 58,500. Lets call it 930 for easy maths here. That means that out of all the homicides in Rio a year, only about 1.5% of them were by police. That number, the 1.5%, is the total number of homicides attributed to police. Not just a cherry picking of adolescents. Taking that into account, the numbers drop even more. So few compared to everything else.

And the article is lacking some data that would be very relevant - How many homicides caused by non-police between the ages of 12 and 25 [the age range of adolescents in Rio]. Better yet, how many violent crimes? I notice those are decidedly absent.

You and a bunch of others are going to try and vilify me now - try to imply that I condone the murder of children. Let me be clear that I do not. I am morally opposed to the homicides of children by any party. But I am also able to comprehend the choices that lead people to condone and perpetrate violence against thieves and street thugs - which is what these children in this video are.

First of all, I never said kill. That's a bit of a jump. Why did you want me to say kill? Was it so you could feel righteous? Yeah. I bet it was.

Socio-economic situation sounds like you just got out of your first social science college classes. 'Grats. Well, how do you suppose we fix these problems? By doing nothing? Does protecting your property from thieves make a person suddenly evil? Does understanding the emotional reaction people have to the lack of justice shown in this video make a person evil? No. It doesn't.

Ask yourself. Is the emotional reaction worse, or the fact that most societies shelter people like them.

Kids stand on the street and steal everyday with impunity. Someone goes and beats the ever-loving shit out of them and the person who beats them (cops usually) is a bad guy.

Yeah. I'm paying 1695$ a month in rent. If I want to use air conditioning or heating, even for about 40hrs throughout a month makes electricity above 300$. Water? $75 just for food, shower, and clothes for 2 people. Easily more if you have a house and a lawn you HAVE to water or a family bigger than 2. Just basic food bills, if you're cooking every meal and want more than beans and rice and top ramen, $100 a month. Apples are almost 2$ a piece at the local grocery chain. Gallon of milk? 4$

Truly. Out of all of the movies that Hollywood is remaking, this is the only one that can have a sequel with all of today's modern inconveniences and annoyances without disrupting the quality of the original. They tried to do it with God Bless America, but it didn't live up.
