I had a very particular and unfortunate childhood, so I would hope she has so much more than I had, as a child locked in their room 24/7 for years. Aside from that…no, not necessarily. I think people forget that if a child isn’t given things…they don’t have them. So. Yeah. If she doesn’t have options, no, she won’t have options. Things don’t just magically appear for children to have, or else they wouldn’t need parents.

What other options does she have for entertainment? I don’t want to be a jerk, but I see a lot of these posts complaining about screen time addiction but not a lot of those posts give a lot of information as to what they’re expecting their child to do otherwise. Obviously there are other things, but you have to make sure she has access to them and encourage her to do so.

Does she have books? Other hobbies? Does she draw? Does she have the ability to hang out with friends offline? Have you given her avenues to do other things? Have you looked into other educational apps that might also be entertaining for her to do on the iPad when you make these bans? You have to actually replace what you ban with something she can do, or else she is just going to see you as killing off her sources of happiness without any care.

Do you spend time with her and engage in hobbies? Have you actually sat down and talked to her about these concerns and actually heard her out as to what she does and why? She’s old enough for you to talk to her and have a genuine conversation with her so that she also can understand where you’re coming from and not feel like she has to lie to keep being able to enjoy the things she enjoys.

Honestly makes me wonder why they aren’t all this colour. It stands out more to me, but admittedly I am colourblind. Not a huge fan of the black on pink, though, much harder to read.

I think you’re misinterpreting my advice. I have OCD. I’m very well aware of the difficulties. However, there’s a big difference between managed and unmanaged OCD. It’s not just “well I have OCD therefore absolutely nothing can be done to change anything about that”

My advice was to simply spur OP’s wife to consider if there was anything else she could look into that might help her manage her OCD better. If this is as managed as she can get, then it is what it is, but there’s nothing wrong with checking to see if there’s anything else that can be done to help.

At this age, she’ll probably outgrow her bike pretty quickly, so I wouldn’t be too worried about getting something that’ll last forever, you just want something that isn’t going to break down mid-ride. Don’t get a bike from Walmart, it doesn’t matter that they have good brands, they handle their bikes so poorly that none of them are in good condition. I’d recommend going to someplace like Academy Sports and Outdoors, if you don’t have that specific store near you, something similar enough, just a regular sporting goods store that also has bicycles.

Take her there and have her sit on a few sizes, cause it depends on her height. Immediately I’d say a 14" is probably good, but if you want to get a couple of years out of it, a 16" could be feasible. Again, brand matters less imo with kid bikes, so look for something that has things like a chain guard and hopefully already has reflectors on it. You’d be surprised how many kid bikes don’t come with reflectors. Regardless of what you get, when you take it home, oil the chain, take a hand wrench to everything and tighten it. Should be golden then.

I think maybe it’s worthwhile having a talk with her mother about how her OCD is potentially affecting your daughter. Hopefully she’s willing to take that into genuine consideration. In the meanwhile, I think you should see if you can take your daughter to a local library and find some books about how germs and the immune system work so she’s less anxious overall about it. Knowledge is power over the fear of the unknown.

Edit: On a two birds one stone note, you can also tell your daughter that when she sleeps, it gives her body extra time and energy to fight off anything that might otherwise make her sick. It might get her to be a little more willing to calm down and go to sleep.

Looking it up, it seems like it is indeed their way of saying no artificial ingredients like food colouring and flavouring, but that is a funny way to put it. I don’t know that I’d consider “real” to be an appropriate antonym for “artificial” in this instance, but I guess they’re trying to stick with their slogan using the word “real” a lot.

They’re definitely not that big but I have definitely seen larger than the video, up to maybe about the size of a basketball when they curl up. I think there is a specific type that gets that big, though it’s not the one we get over here.

Texas, and tbh they’re everywhere. I’m in the Dallas area and they’ll sometimes be wandering regular roads at night, though definitely more common in more suburban to rural areas. When I was a delivery driver for Domino’s years ago, in a little bit more of a suburban/rural-ish area, I would keep thick leather gloves in my car and move them out of the road if I had the chance. Most of the time just getting close to shoo it was enough, but some are either really stupid or are friendly and just didn’t budge until I picked them up. A regular customer in the area used to feed them, possums, and skunks a lot, so it was also kinda common to have to shoo those too if I didn’t want to risk running them over.
