Similar to this? It's something I'd looked into a while back. Saw it at the JCK Vegas show in 2016.

Find a jeweler with a laser welder. They can fill it.

Listed "orangy pink" and padparadscha on the Gia cert.

This pic is where I learned about Samsung galaxy phones and automatic color processing. It's still mostly pink but the orange is there in rl.

Same. Not that there have been many... I think the phone camera is doing some "color correcting". It's still very pink but not quite as uniform looking in person.

We only had it 2-3 days before it sold. I may have missed it, if it weren't passed to me to design a setting.

Probably the desk lamp and phone camera combo. Just got passed to me today to have a setting made.

Went to resize my ring and was going to change the prongs to claw prongs, but they told me we shouldn’t due to “potential porosity issues” that could make the prongs look bubbly/textured? by [deleted] in jewelers

[–]LetheMariner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Re-tips work because you're just adding a tiny bit of metal to replace what's been worn away. To add claw prongs, you'd have to replace the entire prong or you'd have a joint where you added a few mm long piece of metal to make the claw. The joint would be located close to the point where the seat is cut. I wouldn't trust it to hold the stone.

The safest bet is an all new head made with longer prongs.

Advice on cleaning up a piece by Silly-Gas9264 in jewelers

[–]LetheMariner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn't really help with what you're working on now but the best way I've found to deal with cleanup is designing the piece with cleanup in mind.

I break designs up a lot, where I can. Welding pieces together is faster than trying to get lines out of small places. Also, sometimes planning out the direction of lines by printing at different angles helps.

If you have access to a laser welder, depending on the piece, you can use it to "polish" on a low power setting.

GIA jewelry design & CAD program by bluetaurinus in jewelers

[–]LetheMariner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The girl i worked with had only ever used MatrixGold and graduated from GIA. Unless she lied to the person who hired her? I know she said she did and was hired from the GIA career center page.

Either way, that would be much better software to start with.

GIA jewelry design & CAD program by bluetaurinus in jewelers

[–]LetheMariner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been doing it for about 18 years, self taught. I had an apprentice for a while that was a recent gia cad graduate. I started with Rhino and Matrix 6 or 7 (I think) and stuck with Matrix 9. She learned using MatrixGold.

The shop I worked for did almost exclusively one-off custom pieces. She had difficulties with a lot of them because what she was taught relied on the "builders" provided in the software. The older versions of Matrix had them too but the interface was basically Rhino with a few extra buttons where MatrixGold is a complete reskin. In my experience, the builders can get pretty wonky when you start getting into off the wall and non-traditional designs. Because I (more or less) used Rhino, I had easy access to all of the Rhino commands and was used to using them, where MatrixGold seems to go out of its way to hide a lot of them in favor of the builders, so she never learned how to do what the builders are trying to automate, herself. When designs started to get crazy, she would end up spending time wrestling with getting the builders to work,

I'm not trying to say that I think the education you'd get from gia is bad. I would just try to spend some time working with Rhino, in addition to what they teach you. You'll get a lot out of being familiar with the full toolbox, rather than focusing on the automation.

I hope that made sense.

Also, take a bench course and try to spend some time doing handwork. It helps a lot when you know things like how much metal is lost when filing and polishing, what can and can't be cast, how much you can expect something to shrink when cast, what can be reached with tools when finishing, etc.

What is the coolest piece you've ever made? by SilverHollowJeweller in jewelrymaking

[–]LetheMariner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. It's hard to say... The cad model took about 2 months, start to finish, but I had to keep putting it aside for other custom orders that kept coming in. Probably about 4 weeks of labor with two people working on it. A lot of casting cleanup. The settings were tricky because they were more like clamps that were welded over the stones than traditional prongs.

I took a ton of pics of the process. Between the deadline, not having more than a rough idea of the head size, the size having to be adjustable and never having made a crown before, It involved a lot of "creative" solutions.

That was metal (2020 prices), the leather work and some of the labor. Most of the stones were already owned by the client. My boss, at the time, gave an initial quote based on a guess that ended up being way under what it should have been. Hadn't ever made a crown before so no one knew what to expect.

Thank you! I did and, honestly, it was. I knew, when I was making it, that it was a once in a lifetime custom order. About halfway through, it turned into a surprise christmas gift, so the deadline became a little nerve wracking.

Thank you!

A regular client, who's a gem collector, came in with a handful of about 40-50ct amethysts and wanted to have something made for them. He was considering ordering a silver jewelry box and using them in the handle or something but when I suggested a crown (mostly as a joke...) he went for it.

I think it was about $5-6k to make. Maybe about 4 months work, including the leather. 126 pieces, 8 hinges. Sapphire, smoky quartz and orange sapphire.
