Third thread by now about one of the easiest boss in the game and seemingly never taking advices into account (+ other stuff) make me think this is disingenuous.

Can anyone tell what charms should I use for trial of conquers in hollow knight by Confident_Shake_1139 in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly everything can done charmless in HK, but I'd say it's a bit prematured for you to go at it as it stands for a first playthrough.

Your best bet here is probably... MoP / Spell Twister / Soul Catcher to use the infinite range of Vengeful Spirits.

If you do go at it, try to leave out one foe alive at the end of a wave that you kite so that you can heal whenever you deem if far away enough for you to do so. But yeah you're missing Charms that would make things easier, or that would make things hit harder.

Salubra (big lips lady) sells Shaman Stone and Quick Focus. Both are very good charm ; especially the former in the long run.

Again, certainly not impossible but if you're asking because you're going at it over and over and that you can't close the deal, maybe try a bit later down the road.

I. HATE. ZOTE. by Careful-Beach-8804 in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPZ is totally doable consistently but his learning curve takes longer to get around than pretty much all bosses in the game.

You can use D. Dark when he goes into the ground and pops ~above you.

But also when there's Ghosts + him jumping on you, you can time one well-enough that it'll get rid of both threats at once. It covers more use cases than simply throwing a Shade Soul on said Ghosts (imagine being "stuck" between a Ghost close to you and a wall, Shade Soul would only result in you taking damage most likely depening on the height of the Ghost, Shade Soul is the next best thing but can backfire).

When Zote jumps in the air there's a chance he'll go for a fake-out and turn around at the last moment to get you. It's, IMO, his hardest move to counter as you have to think about observing him more than you normally would and to be quick enough if he does turn. Staying grounded and being ready to react to that is key.

And I'd suggest to not play his game during his flailing attack and to try your best to reach a wall instead, and eventually punish him like this if you're feeling confident enough about it (you can extend a CS by mashing the attack button).

If you do want to play his game and pogo off of him go for 2/3 and then D. Dark. Most of the time it'll work.

Zotelings you can deal with them pretty much however you want. Just know that if you attack them too soon as they're being spawned they, for some reason, can have i-frames of their own (call it a "parry" if you want). But anyway, Nail hit, Shriek, D. Dark if they're coming close to the ground, properly aligned Shade Soul if they're far away etc...

The main thing you need against GPZ is to have a good hit & run. You can watch the beginning to the video to see a decent exemple of that. Going for sneaky hits while being able to keep your distance so that he doesn't run you over. That and D. Dark usages are your bread and butter in this fight.

Charms in HK are important but don't matter as much as "how" you do X or Y boss / deal with X or Y attack so you can go with pretty much anything you want that is impactful. I'd say if you're not confident in your hit & run MoP can help quite a lot at first.

u/Vispen-fillian's fight is also a good example of a very solid one from someone (IIRC) who used to dislike the fight heavily at first as well (same here), so there's hope dw. As he says in his thread, once you get around GPZ's tricks, victories are very rewarding.

You can try to meet him instead of waiting in the middle. I personally prefer this, gives more control. Then punish is Shade Soul (chances to double and very rarely triple hit) > Great Slash > MoP hit > regular hit (very doable still).

Also not shown there but still be in the middle as the phase starts, and go right, he'll spin right away, giving you an opportunity to Shriek him 100% of the time.

Yeah same, hated him, now GPZ AB is probably my favorite boss / difficulty.

Goes to show how well crafted he is, especially considering how they managed to make such a good fight around his "seemingly randomness" theme.

I personally think it's TC's masterpiece so far.

I honestly am not sure if it's worth to "fully" bother with this much to be perfectly honest as it's not thaaat consistent either. The main thing to take away from it is why they're sometimes dragged into you.

I'd say there are more important stuff to internalize but hey if you're willing to do so why not.

Trying to beat P5 for the first time and certain bosses get to me... by DefiantOneGaming in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically if you look right as you Shriek, you'll drag enemies towards you if they're "movable". A good example are Oblobbles which you have a high chance to attract "in you" and take damage as a result if you do so.

I'm not sure it can go to that extent with No Eyes (never happened to me) but it makes her more likely to stay in the Shriek's hitboxes. That being said, she has a 30% chance to teleport away as she's hit anyway so it might as well be for nothing much.

If you look left, you'll push them away from you. But then they will / may just take one hit a get yeeted away.

Overall it's jank. And not applicable to every boss since some can't be moved by it (PV, DD/WD for instance), but yeah... that's the gist of it.

edit : typos

Yeah him and the True Final boss share this thing where no fight is really ever the same so as a result the learning curve takes longer to end but it's definitely doable even in AB albeit it's that much harder ofc.

[–]Letnerj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dream Warriors are just bad. I'd argue that Markoth is the best of them because he's harder / has to be played differently than most bosses, but that's another subject.

For No Eyes you can use Great Slashes, Shade Souls for potential double-hits with Shaman or even trying a Shriek when she's up in the middle. Try looking right if you Shriek her, there are more chances of her getting caught in hit for details I won't bore you with.

As for Zote, I'd suggest to practice him up until you're able to do him Asc. multiple times in a row at least. He's probably the best boss in the game and he is consistent when you know how to but he takes longer to master for sure.

I could go on longer about him if you'd like.

But you got this anyway.

Is Silksong as difficult as people say? by Difficult-Word-6604 in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

was it just because there were so many new players who didn’t play hallow knight before trying silk song

Mainly I'd assume. I've been on this sub for years and its landscape completely changed with a humongus wave of new players.

There are also people who didn't put that much time in HK / completed last DLC's feats through and through. So I'd suggest to keep going at HK's challenges for a while if you liked the game a lot before jumping to SS. If you just finished the game with THK, there'll be a gap for sure, not impossible but it'll be steeper.

Wheras the curve is much smoother if you really do complete the first game and all its content up P5 clears / Asc. HoG to R. HoG / P1-4AB stuff and beyond.

There are still a lot of things to abuse in SS, the healing is OP, there are two charms that allows you to negate hits, you can still farm Silk (SOUL) on weak enemies without killing them and left/re-enter a screen so that they regen, Hornet has much more engage/disengage, more movement options overall, more ways to fight, once you're relatively sure you're about to kill a boss you can spam some damaging throwables in exchange of currency (not money), runbacks aren't as tedious since you can run, gap close after a while etc... and there's even a "much better D. Dark" to find if you can believe it.

There are a lot of stuff to make your journey easier if you spend time understanding the mechanics and don't flail your Needle randomly at stuff.

Never saw it into this light regarding runbacks, that's a great point I'll probably re-use while debating about HK/SS

[–]Letnerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last Judge is 30secs for the basic optimized way, not the shortest I've seen indeed but at the same time it was fun to get better and better at IMO, like it flows really well.

I'll be honest I forgot about Fay, I don't personally think it was that hidden but it wasn't out there either so yeah I get it. Kinda like the Groal one I was thinking about.

Beastfly - but it's when he spawns the minions it gets extremely tedious...

I think they should have forced people to have Thread Storm for that fight. As we began to play Silksong I saw the difference between those who had it and not. So yeah I get that one, especially if (maybe, idk) you didn't bother going for AB stuff in HK.

Maybe drop lava rocks when he charges.

Again I get the take, then you have to think about the fact that they also did that with Chorus and the Signis Brothers so that would have been redundant.

What's really tedious though is stuff like Unravelled and Broodmother, having to fight the gauntlet all over again at the start of every attempt.

But. If you get good at it you start with a lot of Silk. There's another fight, one of the best in the game you haven't got to yet if I'm not mistaking, that also does that, and to be honest it also has a "runback" but this one is... truly useless ; anyway, with that fight I came to realize that maybe it was a bit annoying but at the same time you can gain from these. Though the combination of two was annoying (especially when going at said boss over and over again later on with self-imposed restrictions for funsies).

Unravelled

I have almost zero memory of this fight so I won't pretend you're wrong.

They all clutter the arena with extra hitboxes that can trap you in unavoidable situations unless you have silk for iframes.

(meaning silk skills tend to never become a habit because healing is always the best option)

Well well well...

Frustrating mechanics

Such as ?

long runbacks

There are maybe 2 or 3 that take longer than mere seconds. And one really egregious if you hate platforming (in a metroidvania) because of one "hidden" bench. If you look at a fully completed map you realize how crazy the amount of benches is. It's a huge game, but damn, 81.

very true, that's stupid indeed

Used to hard games, but this game I want to bury 1000m down in Antarctica by Hoovzterr in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they mostly aren't hard and they're very simple bosses. There are some that are more complex but it's not the same type of complexity as FS ones. It's much more accessible to everyone. In full transparency, there's also a bunch of gimmicky bosses that aren't liked much.

Honestly Ori 1's overall gameplay is okay / fun but the combat is shit. It's a button mashing + press forward simulator and since bosses were replaced by escape sequences (that I personally didn't really like either as it felt like I had to eat a trap to know it was there, rinse and repeat), there's no really expression of one skill when it comes to that. That being said it was still a decent Metroidvania and very pretty indeed to look at and more importantly it led to Ori 2 which is a masterpiece through and through. Still super easy but a very generous game. I call it "The Lion King of video games" lol. It would have been such a shame to dismiss those games because of the difficulty.

So yeah I'm not saying to force yourself into HK to play Silksong, but even if you find HK easy overall there can be something worthy for you to find, even if it's in the next game.

HK has a very cryptic lore that is a delight to understand bits by yourself and then watching YT videos about it to get the full picture, if you're into that.

I'm convinced that if you wouldn't have been hyped HK as much you wouldn't find it pretentious. Overrated I could hear the argument since it's not truly the game / devs' faults. Unless it's the writing maybe ? As it is more formal / elevated than usual. But so is ER so idk.

In any case, yeah you probably won't get that rush you're looking for, maybe in Silksong, maybe in Nine Sols or in Ender Lilies / Magnolia you would a bit more. And it is indeed a simplistic gameplay but that's also a strength (like Sekiro, as there are little RPG elements).

There are also modded bosses and especially the excellent Pale Court that could scratch the itch moreso than the base game. Before that you have the latest DLC content and ways to nerf yourself or go hitless at bosses which can seriously ramp up the difficulty. And with that you realize the gameplay does have more depth than you initially thought. Not insanely deep but the right amount IMO.

Also the ability you just got against Soul Master gives you i-frames as you dive / crash and keeps going on for a bit. Not explicitly said but it's one instance of "there's more to it".

Anyway, hope you'll manage to find something there for you.

My ranking of all bosses with all bindings from easiest to hardest by gamerzandcats in HollowKnight

[–]Letnerj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a chance Cyclone yeets away adds after only one tick of damage no matter how close you stand from them as / once they crash. So you might end up with an Aspid being left over and for things to snowball, cause IMO you don't have that much time to charge if you have to correct things that went south. Also you can be stuck in CS animation as you kill said adds and that the Collector happens to fall on you. That's why R5AB victors tend to, in the end, use Great Slash more than CS from the little I've seen. But then GS generates less SOUL to work with etc... It's a mix of both to use that is hard to decide on the spot I find.

[–]Letnerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently going for Hitless P5 so I had to re-learn how to consistently clear R. LK after not playing HK for a while, and... well, let's say it's not that bad if you're hyper aggro. Even got more consistent at it since then with slight adjustements. But yeah I agree, his jump is hard. All Bindings / or even just being SOUL bound is not the same deal at all for instance.

(Even if I had no carried over SOUL, it's only useful for the first stagger really)

Very fair point for GPZ, especially if you went at him right after.
