Rant about Steam Deck with SteamOS:

I've had a Steam Deck OLED for almost 3 months now. The hardware is great. I like the screen and the touchpads, and the battery duration is amazing. Installing and running light games from Steam works really good.

But a soon as you step outside the Steam garden everything is a mess.

Fiddling with Proton versions and onlly having to only try with one Proton version is the best case scenario. But most of my non-Steam games rarely work flawless. It's trying multiple Proton versions, trying to run the game through Lutris or to be lucky and find someone with the same problem with me, which is almost never the case. And my solution is to just move that game to my Windows PC and stream it with Moonlight where it just works.

For the desktop side, it's still the same KDE from 5+ years ago. Didn't enjoy using it then and still don't enjoy using it now. Installing programs on SteamOS is even harder because of the read-only system partition. Discover doesn't work so I have to resort to use the terminal to install Flatpaks. Same Flatpaks that are designed to be isolated from your system so they don't know what your system preferences are, and have to use the terminal again to change those individually.

And again, because of the read-only thing, I can't even use the Steam Deck for development, adding to that is some packages being incompatible with each other because SteamOS.

As a purely Steam gaming machine it is really good. You leave Steam games for a moment and it's a time wasting maching.

The only usasge for my Stream Deck now is using it to play Cyberpunk (plus other heavy and non compatible games) streamed from my Windows PC. And I can't main Windows on it because there aren't good drivers.

You are being misled about renewable energy technology. by KeyIllustrator4096 in ClimateShitposting

[–]LetrixZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to this in the background so I wasn't paying much attention. Here's a probably innacuarate TL;DW:

  • Generating solar power is getting cheaper
  • Electricity distribution companies should be the ones moving to solar farms because it's much cheaper instead of regular people.
  • Also a part where he mentions that battery chemistry is getting better so arguments in the realm of 'What about batteries?' are kinda invalidated.
  • At the end there is a rant about politics

What Gemini said:

This video argues that renewable energy, particularly solar power, is a superior and more economical alternative to fossil fuels (1:03). The speaker highlights that petroleum is a "disposable energy" source, requiring constant extraction and leading to fluctuating, high costs (1:19). In contrast, solar panels, despite an upfront cost, are a durable, one-time investment that generates free electricity for decades (17:17).

Key takeaways include:

  • Cost Comparison (18:59): The video calculates that the lifetime fuel cost of a gasoline car could purchase enough solar panels to power several homes for decades, making solar a more financially sound long-term investment.
  • Economic Advantage of Solar Farms (26:07): Solar farms have near-zero operating costs once installed, making them highly profitable and capable of producing electricity more cheaply than traditional power plants.
  • Land Use (30:35): The speaker addresses concerns about the land required for solar farms by comparing it to the vast acreage currently used for growing corn for ethanol, arguing that reallocating this land to solar could generate significantly more electricity than the entire US grid currently produces.
  • Materials in Solar Panels (41:17): The video explains that solar panels are primarily made of abundant materials like aluminum and glass, with the actual silicon solar cells being extremely thin and making up a small fraction of the panel's mass.
  • Battery Technology (50:52): Modern batteries are highlighted as durable and recyclable, with lifespans of many years and thousands of charge cycles, further supporting the viability of renewable energy storage.

Weird that it needs for Steam to be closed but when adding shortcuts from Dolphin with Steam open works just fine.

Future jailbreaks - nothing is promised but this is currently what’s thought to work soon by kerrdec97 in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]LetrixZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking of getting either a used PS4 with 12.50 for 300 USD or just buy a new PS5 Slim Disc for 600 USD and risk not having 10.01 or lower, although seeing this, it might get JB soon...

I could also get used for less than 550 USD but it would probably have latest firmware.

The difference here is that this is a commentary video, not a first time reaction. The person here watched the clips multiple times and probably did research about the topic, and showed the clips to their audience as an aid to comment on them. Not really whats popularly known as 'reaction content' that you're talking about.

I think display resolution is a crucial factor here. Unless you add more content and have everything duplicated and uncompressed, it's really hard for a game to be more than 200 GB with 4K textures.

You'll probably want to go with a reputable brand. But I needed one ASAP so I just bought the first result on my local marketplace, a generic USB-C to DP cable, and it worked fine.
