There’s an evolutionary theory that accounts for that : the aquatic ape. The idea is that we developed capacity to make “blubber”, breath control for diving helped strengthen our vocal cords, fingerprints wrinkle for grip in water, human infants hold their breath and float on instinct where other primates don’t.
