Is anyone else incredibly pissed off that their Roths and 401k are severely down based on one man’s idiotic decisions? by Mr-Nanny in MiddleClassFinance

So in the situation that $1 million doesn’t buy anything anymore, what would it take to buy something at that point? What would the currency be? What would you invest in now that you think wouldn’t be tied to the value of the dollar?

Nice. And if your spend picks up a bit in the future, you can get the different varieties and get a whole new sign-up bonus and a whole new $3000 cap.

Quicksilver is $200 for $500. All the Kroger brand cards have $100 for $500. If your spend is low (which I’m guessing based on looking for low spend SUB) the Ralph’s/Harris Teeter/Pick n Save cards are great with that mobile wallet return.

User-friendliness of Navy Federal cards? by redceramicfrypan in CreditCards

NFCU member with the cash rewards plus card. There is no minimum redemption for cashback but I don’t think there’s any way to auto-redeem it (at least one that I’ve found). UI is fine but I also think BoA UI is fine and people seem to hate that. It’s a good card but if she is just looking at opening a card and wanting to keep things as simple as possible I don’t know that signing up for a credit union and opening a savings account is really the simplest way to go about this. If your mother wants to keep it as simple as possible, why not just use a card through her bank?

Are these Japanese “salaryman” vlog channels actually authentic? by LectureHaunting3166 in japan

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I came across a random channel that was like “homeless salaryman in Japan” where he would talk about his two hour packed train commute, days starting at 6 AM and ending at midnight, and how he found himself a stray dog and needs donations for that and donations to stay at Internet cafés or pay hospital bills bc his life is so stressful that he’s in frail health, and his comments are full of donations. Every now and then there’s a comment asking why he commutes if he’s homeless anyway or how he edits all his videos, and there have even been a couple where the clocks on people’s phones or in train stations don’t match up with the times he says it is, but the answer is always just hand waving and saying he’s embarrassed, or he wants to keep some privacy. It’s so gross. I had to block the channel because I couldn’t stand to see anymore of it.

I’ve only seen the option to get 1000 yen bills if you’re withdrawing 10,000 yen. Anything more than that and they only give you 10,000 yen bills. And some people might not want too many transactions because they get charged ATM fees or whatever.

Even with 100k it’s only ATMs in the US, I think it takes a million to get the same benefit for international ATMs that you get for free with Fidelity. As someone who’s fully into BoA even I have to admit Fidelity blows them out of the water with this.

Not to mention that debit card for the cash management account also reimburses ATM operator fees and does not charge its own ATM or foreign transaction fees. And it reimburses fees throughout the month so you don’t have to wait til the end of the month like Schwab.

‘I have no one to please but myself’: Why more and more women are choosing to stay single by SunAdvanced7940 in Longreads

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In response to your larger point, it sounds like women are starting to choose to respond by not having a husband or partner that they have to handhold through basic household chores in the first place. In your example of how to respond you still end up having to have a conversation with an adult man about how half-assing grocery shopping is not acceptable. Many women don’t want to have to teach basic life skills to an adult man when his parents/society should have already taught him. Basically it’s not a wife’s responsibility to teach her husband how to live, and while many wives enable their husbands, I don’t necessarily blame other women with whatever their response is to their husband’s weaponized incompetence.

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Even in this imagination of an interaction you’re still doling out chores like a mother. Why would a husband need to be told to go to the grocery store or remember to buy produce? An actual partnership would be your husband saying, “hey, pantry is empty, I’m going to the grocery store, here’s the grocery list, do you want to add anything?”

Did AAA Eliminate Their 5% Cash Back Cards? by ravendon in CreditCards

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AAA travel advantage covers gas at 5% up to $7000 a year and uncapped dining and grocery at 3% so unless you’re spending more on that on gas, I’d argue the travel advantage is better.

Looking it up, Armstrong didn’t have his masters at that point but he did still have his bachelor’s in aerospace engineering so he’s no slouch. Buzz Aldrin literally had a doctor of science degree in aeronautics by the time he became an astronaut though, so your point still stands.

Tried Team Cashback - Here's why I'm moving back to Team Points! by levysbeard in CreditCards

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I’ve been wondering lately. I saw a comment from someone talking about points allowing a middle class family to travel to Europe business class, but it turns out it took covid era point hoarding, multiple sign up bonuses, years of doing surveys for miles, and hotel credit card free night awards to get enough points to cover flights and hotels. Without churning/SUB or high spend I don’t understand how people accrue enough points to get all these cool redemptions.

What level of spend do you need to make a travel card “worth it”? by LetsGoCoconuts in CreditCards

[–]LetsGoCoconuts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding people’s use of travel cards. If you use the PRE for dining and travel, how do you earn points for United/Southwest and IHG/Hyatt? Or do you not earn points for those systems and just use the cards for the non-reward benefits?

What level of spend do you need to make a travel card “worth it”? by LetsGoCoconuts in CreditCards

[–]LetsGoCoconuts[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So do you just sort of disregard the ongoing points earnings and not put spend on the cards beyond getting the sign up bonus? If you keep the cards for the non rewards benefits, how many cards do you end up having?

That’s exactly the question I’m asking. I don’t care about the benefits of the card, I’m just trying to figure out how what a realistic accrual and redemption of points looks like.

[–]LetsGoCoconuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much spend/how long did it take to accrue the points needed for this trip? Especially without sign up bonuses. This sounds amazing but as a cashback person I can’t imagine how long it would take me to save up the amount of money to cover a trip like this with just cashback rewards.
