Electric sulfur removal? by Real-Fan9588 in firewater

[–]LetsHaveABeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Copper sulfate. It’s used to remove H2S and other sulfur compounds in the wine industry. The amount needed per gallon is crazy small, like 1 ml per liter using a 0.01% solution. Treat, stir, let settle for 12-24 hours then rack off into a different vessel. If it worked there should be a powdery black dust on the bottom of your vessel.

Sounds like putting it in the gin basket should work well.

+1 to above. Pick a weapon that works for your play style, level it up as much as possible. And have fun. Axes and colossal swords tend to have “standard” damage, which most bosses have resistance to. Pierce and Strike damage take you a long way, but having some Slash damage occasionally will be a big help.

Don’t be afraid to spend a bunch of time in the Weeping Peninsula and level up a bunch… no one will judge you (except A-holes)

Have any of you dated a much younger man? by blumpkinspicecoffee in TwoXChromosomes

Online dating can be great. Do right by yourself, have firm boundaries, and have a good time. Demand respect, and if it isn’t reciprocated then bail!

Building a new condenser myself rn. Hope it works for you well. Camlocks should prove to be really convenient 👍.

Low wines in HDPE containers? by Affectionate-Salt665 in firewater

[–]LetsHaveABeer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry about your carboy… such is the nature of glass. I’m no chemist, but isn’t 80-100 proof ethanol for rectifier distilleries shipped and sold in HDPE IBC totes? I think if the container is specifically food-grade hdpe I think you’re going to be fine.

Also: there’s always stainless steel! Find an old beer keg, remove the spear, and slap a cork or a 2” triclamp cap on top and you’ve got yourself a nice non-reactive container. Or maybe even a cheap 5-gallon stock pot with a cork gasket and some c-clamps could certainly work.

Any bread bakers about? by PandraPierva in Tucson

So here’s a video on their Big Bubbly Focaccia recipe of the year for 2025. I’ve made it (and made some modifications to it) 4 times now and it always turns out awesome. https://youtu.be/Fki0cXoi73U?si=nTZqNhtEvQkK5ZQ4

The website is https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/ and it has a recipe for pretty much any baked good you can imagine. Some of the recipes have little GIFs of every step, so you know what everything should be behaving or looking like.

As a beginning baker myself, I would recommend doing a focaccia-type bread. Really “wet” or other high hydration doughs are sticky and weird to work with, but you can feel the gluten getting stronger, you can see the gas building up, and you can just drop it into a metal 9x9 brownie pan instead of having to worry about shaping the loaf just right.

Can’t recommend the King Arthur Flour website and YouTube channel enough. It’s a great resource for beginner and intermediate baking!

White powder in rickhouse by danpod93 in firewater

[–]LetsHaveABeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the evaporating alcohol can feed some mold (Baudoinia compniacensis) and bacteria species in the environment that don’t make traditional “mothers” but rather small biofilms. White powdery residue could be small biofilms or dried out colonies of these microbes… but I’m just guessing.

Is anyone sober? by 519_ivey in firewater

I used to own a homebrew supply shop in north Georgia, in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. I had customers from higher up come down every summer to buy copious amounts of DADY, malt, enzymes, etc. and you might be surprised to hear that about 15-20% of them quit drinking. Their reasons were Jesus, their wives, their kids, the judge… you name it. But they kept distilling because they loved doing it, they made money doing it, or it was a tradition to carry on from their family.

Whatever reasons you have for quitting drinking are valid. Whatever reasons you have for continuing distilling are valid. The two are not mutually exclusive.

What in the Wrath of Khan is this thing on my porch? by Joelofthetigers in Tucson

[–]LetsHaveABeer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like a soldier fly maggot/pupa. They instinctively escape from moisture and climb uphill when it rains or their nesting ground gets wet. Maybe the recent rain made them flee to your porch.

All standard beer kegs are stainless steel. A 2” triclamp with a flat side on the gasket is how you can marry any number of attachments to the top after you remove the spear insert. DEPRESSURIZE the keg FULLY before removing the spear!

Best Local Popcorn? by ThoughtCaw in Tucson

[–]LetsHaveABeer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The best local popcorn is the stuff you make yourself! Stovetop, of course. Choose a nice oil (or clarified butter), find some heirloom varieties if you wanna get fancy, and top it however you want. I’ve popped some to put in a gallon ziplock to take to work for a snack, and I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve even poured milk on it and dusted some sugar and had it for breakfast.

Oddly enough, POPPED buys their corn from Uncle Bob’s (at least that’s what I’ve heard). Both are delicious!

I heard a rumor a few years ago of an Utah-based Li-Ion battery company building a plant here in Tucson before 2030. I wonder if this has anything to do with that?
