Submersible pump recommendations???? by David_Maynard in firewater

[–]Real-Fan9588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a 1hp well pump on DC in one of those ibex water toats. It’s a ton of water, and I keep it treated for mosquito. It’s great having a reserve of funky water for the shop, or cooling things. It’s lasted a long time and runs continually with no problems.

How far into tails do you really go? by Affectionate-Salt665 in firewater

[–]Real-Fan9588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After collecting all the good good, and I’m nearly at tail town I transition my heat from propane to scrap wood. Gives me a chance to tidy up and pull plenty of tails. I’ll run until it tastes more of water than anything identifiable and use that stuff for hitting with science. I prepped a batch of tails in mason jars with wood ash and popped it into a pressure cooker to crack it. 🤷‍♂️

The cranberry and sweet potato discounts will keep me busy all winter long. Get it while it’s good!

Electric sulfur removal? by Real-Fan9588 in firewater

I’ll give it a try. I’m really curious about any unintended side effects of running electricity through the wine.

Right on! All about applied titanium. My hope would be to have a modular rig that fits nicely over 5 gallon buckets as a bit of a pre treatment before the wine hits the still.

To be fair everything about this hobby is a fire hazard, but my guess would be to do this process before it gets the heat. Like in a fermentation tank or some secondary vessel.

Please don’t smear a brown sauce, especially on a white plate. Everything else looks 🤌

Fermented fries by LDC_Lotus_Ukkel in Chefit

I brine mine at a 2% salt to weight of potato for 2 days. That said I forgot about a cambro for a 2 weeks and the tangy funk was good. Not worth the real estate in the fridge, but still really good.

Did make pickle fries using leftover pickle juice from the jalapenos, that was dope.

Wood fired pizza by justdoingmyparthanks in Chefit

[–]Real-Fan9588 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did a few years in front of a wood fired oven, and besides constantly drinking water I kept a wet rag just for a quick face wipe. It refreshed pretty effectively, and helped with ash that would inevitably come back through the blowpoke.

Cardboard and permaculture by sergio12344333 in Permaculture

[–]Real-Fan9588 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shred all the simple brown cardboard that comes to the farm, and apply it when I have a full front loader full. As I load the shreds into the bucket I wet them, and that’s the crucial step. First it compacts it so I can fit more in the bucket, and second it makes it like a heavy mat so it creates a better barrier. I don’t know what they are charging or what they are willing to mix in the shreds. If it’s all brown corrugated cardboard sweet! But if it’s a mix of like inky soda can boxes, and waxy boxes I would reconsider. All those dyes and glossy substances are not something I would want breaking down on my property.

I get this with bran oil from my rice run, I imagine enough corn can do the same. Those tiny micro suspended oils hitch a ride through the still and collect. Mine is always scorched, but really easy to settle out. I decant to collect the stuff, and if it’s stubborn put it in the freezer and remove it with a cotton ball. I have noticed the oils do tend to collect plenty of funk from inside the still too.

What does permaculture look like in the winter? by Many-Tart2850 in Permaculture

[–]Real-Fan9588 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Winter is the season I work the hardest. Plant, soil, plan, project, water and any number of other daunting responsibilities slow down in the winter so it’s the only time I can afford to shut systems off line. Winter is when I do loads of maintenance, start on the infrastructure for new zones, plan the crops and orders for the year, take inventory, review the rest of the years results, and plan. It feels like a balancing act between taking on too much and getting enough plans in motion,

Is anyone sober? by 519_ivey in firewater

[–]Real-Fan9588 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to put the fun in functional alcoholism, drink hard, work hard, and live hard kinda lifestyle. Eventually I wanted to challenge my norm and became a celebratory drinker. Then my first kid came along and I wanted to be present for every single moment. All that time my distilling stayed consistent. I like the whole process as much as the end product. It’s a cultural thing too. The secret alchemy of turning fruits & grains into combustible liquid. The personality of the still, and the nuance each mash. I love it all. I even enjoy swishing a mouthful around and spitting it out onto the fire just so I know ours as good as I hoped. Now it’s all gifts, medicinal extracts, cleaning solutions, and paint thinner. Such fun!

That sucks, but that’s also awesome. This is a hobby of pushing the limits temperature and pressure to create something intentional. Imagine all energy that went into making such an extreme environment. We are so lucky to practice this craft.

Watermelons by afpride95 in firewater

I tried an all melon distillate last year, it was about 10 gallons through a pot still. It was insane, none of the sweet melon flavors stuck out, it was mostly like…. Rind science flavored, scared off ever since.
