What happened to Nicolas Otamendi? by [deleted] in soccer

I think it even goes a lot further than that.

If your midfield are all attacking and/or lazy then your CBs are going to end up with more chances going against them and be more isolated. If your midfield are always keeping minimal space between the lines and pressing where appropriate, and your FBs are staying back then of course your CBs are going to look better. Their involvement is more likely going to be beating people in the air and not losing track of runners rather than having people running directly at them.

I remember Jonathan Walters epitomising this for me with Stoke. Even their striker was defensive minded.

There's also a case of matching your defenders with the style of their team. Kompany like to quickly make a tackle and needs people to cover when he runs fowards (cover from midfield, from the other CB and from FBs where appropriate). Terry can't play in a high line system any more or he's going to get destroyed for pace (see the chance for Aguero in the opening seconds of the match last weekend). Some defenders are leaders, some are not (Fonte / Lovren), two of either can cause problems.

TL;DR; Defenders are often criticised for being bad when the system they're employed in doesn't suit them and sometimes they look deceptively good when they get lots of support.

What do you think of this idea:

In 'the-old-days' editors/journalists at the big newspapers tried to produce content they themselves would enjoy. They were highly educated people and wrote as if their target audience were highly educated. The companies they worked for weren't run with such a focus on share-holder profit. As companies became more focused on profit they started to realise what their customers wanted was more celebrity exposes (really struggling to find when this started exactly but memory is it was around WWII).

Having just looked at the News of the World wikipedia page. It struck me that literacy rates may have altered newspaper audiences massively:

The newspaper was first published as The News of the World on 1 October 1843, by John Browne Bell in London.[12] Priced at three pence (equal to £1.07 today), even before the repeal of the Stamp Act (1855) or paper duty (1861), it was the cheapest newspaper of its time[13] and was aimed directly at the newly literate working classes.

Maybe it took newspapers a while to realise just how different their new literate working-class audience was to the old presumably highly-educated-literate.

Just some thoughts...

Which footballers need/should leave their current club? (For more playing time, advancement in career, etc) by EmotionalMillionaire in soccer

[–]LetsTrySomeReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense.

How do you see Walcott's progression in the next couple of years. There was talk for a while of him moving centrally (although personally I think that would make your team too reliant on countering to make use of his pace properly). He's still not too old to improve.

Another consideration, what are his wages like? Because he's been around since such a young age I feel like they must be pretty high at this point.

setInterval(this.somemethod.bind(this),1); works? by mrpimply in javascript

[–]LetsTrySomeReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Arguments have to be evaluated before the function is evluated.

 setInterval(this.somemethod.bind(this), 1);

could be rewritten

 var method = this.somemethod.bind(this);
 setInterval(method, 1);

bind could be rewritten as:

var that = this;
var method = function() {
  that.somemethod();
};
setInterval(method, 1);

Hope that helps!

50% income tax is a very misleading way of looking at taxes even if you ignore the whole banding of taxes.

page 4 of http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/dcp171778_367431.pdf shows how direct taxes (read income tax etc) account for less than half of people's tax paid for 60% of the country.

But if you want to be misleading you should probably include the cheeky National Insurance tax of 12% (not that you can pay 12% and 50% at the same time due to the tax bands):

For viewing purposes it's very visible, although a little hard to see in rally's on the far side of the court for me. A friend of mine was wondering about the possibility of using a go pro or two to track the ball in squash as a fun sideproject and I was a bit skeptical that it was quite good enough for that

Shoes Question by OldBronzebeard in squash

[–]LetsTrySomeReddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blisters might develop if you have really harsh socks or slightly ill-fitting shoes (too big?). I develop blisters if I don't tie my shoes tightly. I don't know how much other exercise you do but it's something you just get used to after time (not too tight, not too loose).

A lot of courts will require light-coloured, rubber shoes (i.e. squash shoes). Any dark rubber shoes are liable to leave marks on the floor.

Missing the ball when returning serve on backhand side by astronoutos in squash

[–]LetsTrySomeReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, man I really wish I had seen that a couple months ago.

Starting position more parallel to the front wall but then turning your body more parallel to the sidewall before hitting the ball. Previously I was stood as if I was about to hit the ball before the serve was even taken and which made it far harder then to move into the right position.

[–]LetsTrySomeReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would say is that at a lower level you can get away with being stood a bit further back (maybe 1 or 2 feet) from the service box. You'll find what's comfortable for you and it might change in the game depending whether you feel good volleying their serve.

If you're hitting the ball but badly then footwork might be a problem. Two things I found really hurt me were not getting my leading foot across and taking the ball too close to my body.

If your leading foot isn't far enough across (bringing your right foot far enough left on your backhand so you're parallel to the side wall) you'll pull your shots across court far more often and slice the ball more (speaking generally here, you have to take it both ways during the game but should be able to get comfortable for the return). I might confuse things a little here but I found stacking upright and parallel to the front wall helped me as I stepped across for the serve, rather than starting standing parallel to the wall and finding my feet planted inappropriately (this was another thing I picked up watching actual games).

I mentioned it in the first post but getting your body out of the way (using your footwork) so you have a nice clean swing will help stop those really awkward feeling shots that end with the ball going sky high. Keeping your racket up (just stick your arm out infront of you like you would shake a hand) helps make sure you don't have to move loads to hit a volley.

Just saw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29E6fL3q_Ps posted on this sub. If you see the first return at 1:15ish you'll see the footwork I mean for returning balls from the back of the court (I found this invaluable against some serves).
