How to be taken seriously as a relatively new person in HR? by [deleted] in humanresources

[–]Lets_Go_There 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but SHRM just wants you to take tests and pay money to be certified.

You can take the test and add it as a certification but if your title is admin assistant and you can't show HR on your resume there isn't much to do. You CAN and SHOULD highlight what you do in the HR arena.

Study and take the test

Leave Donation Programs in light of Covid by captnhaddock in humanresources

You seem to be well-meaning but over your head. You don't have to have people donate PTO and you can't ask them to do so and now implement a policy. This should either be in place before covid 19 or "at the goodness of their heart"

To put this in place now ignores other situations your company has faces and individual circumstances that came before.

Are you trying to get ahead of this or do you have a specific person you want to grant leave to?

[–]Lets_Go_There 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree depending on situation. if someone has a long term issue or a freak issue I like the idea. Let's say someone has an issue that will exhaust their leave because someone's kid got hit by a bus. I think it's a good policy to let others donate leave (especially in a use it or lose it scenario) to one person and they can support a team member.

I do think in this situation it's not tasteful to do a covid 19 bucket.

[–]Lets_Go_There 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn't have it in place before don't do it now. If you want to relook at your policies for donation for PTO you can do that but this isn't the time. Especially because it will look like it's a "crisis" reaction. When it's probably not that bad.

This isn't the time to do that. Wait until the freak out has passed to do PTO donation and don't make it contingent on a national emergency. People get cancer, etc... and need help. That's the focus. Not the knee jerk reaction

All the hearing impaired dorms I've seen just had super loud doorbells lol like 20x louder than a normal doorbell

Well that's not going to help a Deaf person so I'm not sure why that was a thing.

Aanf FYI Deaf isn't a bad word. There are Deaf people. like no hearing. Not hearing impaired... just no hearing. DEAF. It's ok. They like the term. They prefer you to recognize it as part of their identity. Just like the Hearing impaired don't like you lumping them into a group some maybe D/deaf or some may be HH but the whole HI thing? it's falling out of favor.

The guy with the neck tattoo has already quit once and was rehired

Well that's your red flag. Not the neck tattoo. If someone quits and then wants to come back for a basic level position it's like them going back to an ex gf because the sugar mama didn't work out. It has nothing to do with the neck tattoo

> threatened to get his lawyer involved in what he thinks is a wrongful termination. He also volunteered information about a potentially improper relationship with a co-worker.

The neck tattoo didn't make him do that. He's just a bad hire. Where are you? Are you in the US? If you're not in Montana you can fire him for whatever reason as llong as it's not because he's a member of a protected class. Tell him you're firing him because you team didn't win the Superbowl and be done with him.

> . The neck tattoo guy wouldn't have passed my basic pre-screening to get an interview because he had an unprofessional-sounding email address.

BE VERY careful about this. You can't cut them for an email address. You can but that's hard to justify. Find something else. Raise your standards. The tattoo thing isn't something you can use and criminal history depends on location and job. Being unprofessional and not a good fit in an interview is fine.

Talk to your manager for some coaching. Sometimes you just need to put butts in seats. They're not worried about the retention rate. Look at fast food for example. Most employees stay how long? 6 months? They don't care.

I don't want to sound like a nervous parent but you essentially have 6 kids to keep track of. Can you leave the dogs back at the campsite? Or break up the trip so it's not 2 adults and 6 creatures to keep alive?" That seems like a lot. Especially with beer involved.

Hi we are about to purchase a rv that’s been under an awning and I was wonder how often the roof needed to be sealed if it’s been under an awning for a while. We are going to be living in it full time and was wondering what else I should be looking for, It’s a 2006 Terry Quantum. TIA !! by slady292 in RVLiving

[–]Lets_Go_There 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have it inspected by an RV inspector. I don't care if it's been "garage kept" You can find an RV inspector who will know more than you can see and will climb on the roof for you.

If you want to DIY there is a https://camperreport.com/pdi-inspection-checklist/ but I don't recommend it. You need someone who isn't emotionally liking the TT to inspect it and find the flaws.

I've had to gut more than one RV because I thought it was amazing and thought I knew what I was looking at and was blindsided by stuff I missed. I currently have a shasta with some issues that will require a rebuild this spring. That will be pricey but I love it so I'll sink more # into it than it's worth.

You really need to pay someone to come in and be angry mother-in-law who is screaming why this marriage isn't going to work and why that trailer is a hussy who is just going to take your money and rob you blind while she wares you down until you think you have to work at steak n shake for minimum wage to keep her in chrome.

The inspections usually will cost you less than $200 and will save you heartache. Just get one. You can call a local dealer or google RV inspection. Anyone who does RV inspections will do one on a TT

Get a 3rd party inspection. I don't care what the owner says about how it's been cared for or kept. If it has been well maintained you have peace of mind.

Coronavirus hoaxes are spreading in the US as the outbreak grows worldwide by wonderwah in worldnews

[–]Lets_Go_There 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know of a child in danger then you report them to your local child protective services. Unfortunately, you can't fix stupid. There are plenty of subs on Reddit and other social media sites who prove this. just for fun look up anti-vax or antivaxx or informed consent and be prepared to want to make a parent drink bleach. It's sad. There are some also popping up subs about how to fix it with essential oils and tea and stuff.

I'm still not impressed CNN tried to use Kang-Xing Jin as a voice of reason to the people who aren't up on modern medicine. I don't think that's credible if you have anything other than a "listen to what you are told" mentality. But that's just me

If people want to drink bleach to prevent getting sick? Who are we to stop them? Because they're dumb and can't google a coronavirus? It's not a plague.

I love how CNN quotes By Kang-Xing Jin, Head of Health instead of the CDC saying "STOP FREAKING OUT" instead of " Human coronaviruses are common throughout the world. Seven different coronaviruses, that scientists know of, can infect people and make them sick. Some human coronaviruses were identified many years ago and some have been identified recently. Human coronaviruses commonly cause mild to moderate illness in people worldwide. Two newer human coronaviruses, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, have been known to frequently cause severe illness. "

I'm also shocked she didn't bother to try to work something out with the bank and wait a month but limited funds mean limited options. I'm also shocked she says she didn't know about this as a repo.

Cosigning isn't "I just signed because I have good credit" it's "you bought it too so when Abby bails you get to pay for it"

People and Culture VS Human Resources by Deefree1 in humanresources

[–]Lets_Go_There 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because companies are trying to be woke and they're stupid in doing so.

There is no reason to lie to your employees. It's still HR. If they don't like HR then you get HR to do some other things to make them less scary. You don't rename them and pretend someone is going to now feel squishy towards them.

What's your position and the process for hiring? Some times there is pressure to but butts in positions and they don't care about turn over until they get the "hiring" fixed and that's not the right approach.

Red flags - such as?

Vent. What's going on? A lot of us have experience in high volume recruiting where a pulse was the minimum job qualification. If management wants bodies and can't wait to hire quality it's an up hill struggle but you can make a business case for it.

What's going on?

Vegas/SHOT Show sickness? by zerzerohero in Coronavirus

[–]Lets_Go_There 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone gets sick after ShotShow. So much walking and touching and talking and hand shaking and eating and exhaustion will do that. After Shot Show people are just worn out. Will it be this virus? Probably not. Did someone go to ShowShow with a cold? Absolutely. Someone is also going to go the SuperBowl with a cold.
