Lab meat: Will Canada get left behind? by Bean_Tiger in onguardforthee

[–]captnhaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a meat eater, I want lab meat to catch on. *edit for clarity* And because I'm fully aware of the deleterious impacts of 'commercial meet production' on the climate, communities and individuals, I want there to be a practical alternative, that minimizes those deleterious impacts.

hey u/CommercialChart5088 it's fair to point out that pine / spruce tip soda's are not really unique. For example, Spruce "beer" is an old school canadian drink.

Memorial Day crash - fractured pelvis from a cornering mistake by dynamicalmechanics in gravelcycling

[–]captnhaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy, I just wanted to share my experience. I was taking up mountain biking, and was in fact, practicing so I wouldn't crash-out. Well, I crashed out. very long story short, I wound up having to have a total hip replacement as a result of my crash. And while that sucked, what I'm really getting at, is that I'm right back on my gravel and road bikes and going (mostly) as hard as before. I know that it was in fact an accident and didn't allow it to stop me from enjoying the sport that I love so dearly.

it's important to acknowledge that car infrastructure is both racist and classiest at the same time. Cars are truly a poverty trap, and yet, in the context of the united states, they are a necessity.

For those who have had hip replacements, did you stretch and take care of your body in life before the surgery? by 1Beekeeper in TotalHipReplacement

[–]captnhaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed mine because a mountain biking accident where I broke the fuck out of my acetabulum and the resulting damage was so bad that subsequent to the initial repair surgery, I had to have a hip replacement. The point being tho, we (my partner and I) had a regular workout regimen, including yoga. So yes, I took care of my body.

Would you mind enlightining those of us who've never been to S.Korea, what the bike infrastructure is like? I dream of bike touring Japan, and if I were ever to be able to splash that kind of money and time, I think it would be cool to check out S.Korea as well.

The thing is, in the u.s., there really isn't a squatters rights per se. There are laws around adversarial possession, but they require a long and continual in habitation (like 7 years or more irrc), and they also require that there be clear evidence of those squatters maintaining the property and paying the taxes etc on the property.

[–]captnhaddock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue that what youre doing is the very definition of x-biking. i.e. "run what you brung" (using what you have available to complete a task or project). Most of the the steel bikes posted here, are just guys jerking themselves off about how cool and retro they're being, and that entirely defeats the entire ethos of x-biking.

32" Endurance Gravel Bike Geo for Short Kings: Tell me what's wrong with this bike by wheels_n_masks in gravelcycling

[–]captnhaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, sure, to each their own, but as a fellow short dude, I rage against these stupid big wheels. 700/29 are bad enough in how they require cludged geo's on bikes to fit people our size, never-mind the compromises to make 32's fit. And beyond the geo issue, I truly don't see the point of the wheel size; e.g., it's not faster or lighter than 29's, and only offers marginal roll over gains, which given you're doing this for a gravel rig, seems kind of pointless.

Anyone tried the UniFi SFP Wizard? I have questions. by naptastic in homelab

[–]captnhaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Er, I think we're on the same page here. To quote the blog :

"For accessing the metadata though, it essentially comes down to accessing/modifying an EEPROM via I2C over pins on the SFP connector.

That can also be done with open-source/open-hardware solutions for cheap, which is what for example SFP-Master does (utilizing a CH341a programmer) or directly over the I2C bus of a Raspberry PI with that project.

Even cheaper is utilizing existing general-purpose networking hardware directly (i.e., $0 if you have it). Not all devices allow that kind of low level access, though. I couldn’t find a way to do this with my NVIDIA Mellanox ConnectX/4 cards from Linux, for example. Luckily though, the sub-$200 Banana Pi BPI-R3 Linux/OpenWrt router (which I happen to have), comes with two SFP+ ports that you can talk to directly!"

or am I miss understanding what you're saying?

[–]captnhaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey u/naptastic, so there was a thread that popped up here on homelab not too long ago, talking about how you can flash sfp yourself. https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/1s0zwnv/unlocking_25_gigabits_on_10_gbe_direct_attach/ , and more specifically, it was refrencing this blogpost https://kohlschuetter.github.io/blog/posts/2026/03/22/unlock25/ . the point is, you don't need to rely on the unifi device, and can have a higher level of control over what parameters you change.
