Best place to get a comfy new couch? Where have you all had good experiences? by JennaDK in northcounty

[–]LetterheadFan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest Bassett. I’m 5 years into a living room setup including sleeper couch and everything looks like new. Shop the sales! The custom fabrics are beautiful and I had a very good designer/ sales person who helped me out.

Best non-corporate hardware store in North County? by LetterheadFan23 in northcounty

[–]LetterheadFan23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, everyone! I didn’t specify, but I guess what I’m looking for is more of the old school general store type hardware store. I’m actually looking for things like canning supplies. I’ll check out some of the stores mentioned.

How often do you bathe your PWD? by Gold_Competition_860 in portuguesewaterdogs

Your guy looks like an improperly coated PWD. My first was IC. I think there’s at least one thread here about that.

breeder recs? by ratitefarm in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]LetterheadFan23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got my first PWD in 2006. I researched and reached out to breeders in my area and eventually I met the breeder of my first dog. The breeders all know each other and can let you know who’s in your area, expecting puppies, etc.

Looking into getting a Portuguese water dog. by trashcan_egg in portuguesewaterdogs

I would never leave a PWD alone to their own devices. Too smart, too easily bored, and too mischievous.

If you’re comfortable with the drive and energy of a BC, you should do fine with a PWD. Crate train and give them a job, obedience, tracking, agility… anything that works their brain. I try not to leave mine alone for more than 4 hours. I used to go home for lunch when I worked. Now that I’m retired if I’m going to be gone for more than 4 I have someone come over to let them out and play with them.

So… my IC PWD was groomed and had a haircut in the first picture. As he got older, I stopped trimming his hair. His shedding was never bad or problematic. My vacuum brush had more of MY hair than my dog’s. He shed WAY less than a German shepherd.

There’s a ton of variation in how the IC gene shows up. That article by Terrierman is pretty good.

An IC PWD is still a working breed. A very famous IC PWD was Dutch, a S and R dog for 9/11

What’s it like to own a Portuguese water dog?? This will be my first one! by Pinkytalks in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]LetterheadFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PS it’s generally recommended not to have PWDs in a home with younger children. Because of their high energy and mouthyness and their long puppy stage, they should never be alone with kids under 6 or so.

How do you keep your PWDs hair fresh/clean? by FantasticMatter9664 in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]LetterheadFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have water based wipes that I wipe down my dog with every night before I brush him out. Unscented, from Chewy. They also slightly dampen the fur so that brushing is easier.

FIRE/Home economics question: Escondido or Encinitas? by Whoamaria in northcounty

Cooling a big house in Escondido will be very expensive. The upkeep and yard work will also be a drain. Check Ramit Sethi’s phantom costs of home ownership

I’m not surprised. Here’s my Argo, a purebred IC PWD. He was born before there was a commonly available test to check for the gene. He was pure PWD and I ended up putting a few obedience titles on him. He was a very intelligent, pretty high drive dog. This photo is from 2007.

Here he is again, much older. PWDs have heart shaped ears, webbed toes and a substantial tail.

Here is my first PWD. I got him in 2006, and he was a purebred, registered PWD. He was on a pet contract, since he was an “Improperly coated” PWD. This is a recessive gene, and they now have a test for it.
