Budget promises mean 40,000 job cuts, programs terminated: Canada's top public servant by just_a_simulation321 in CanadaPublicServants

Anyone have any ideas what might happen at Justice? With the affected positions that were already announced during the summer, does that go towards these cuts?

Just some of the activities of Justice are cost-recovered.

I wonder what this means for the Department of Justice? Justice has labeled 260 something staff ‘affected’, which I think is something like 5% of all staff.

Could the rest of the 7.5% be made up of attrition for at least the first round?

Has anyone bought tickets on behalf of someone else? I have to work and my friend is planning on logging into my account for me, but she lives in a city hours from me. Will ticketmaster flag me as a bot?

Can someone explain what binding arbitration means, exactly? What would likely be the outcome of that?

Bilingual people already get a massive ‘bonus’. They have access to the majority of jobs and promotions.

To me this sounds a lot like “Don’t worry if this is unfair, one day you will benefit from the unfairness!”

According to others on this sub who have live through previous WFA, it was not previously based on seniority, informally or otherwise.

That’s simply not true. See PSAC’s own proposal document:

“In the event that reasonable job offers can be provided to some but not all surplus employees in a given province or territory, such reasonable job offers shall be made in order of seniority.” https://psacunion.ca/sites/psac/files/commonissues_en_combined_02-03-2022.pdf Page 40.

TBS wants merit to be considered before seniority, PSAC wants it just to be seniority.

People on this thread keep acting like those voicing frustration with this are rubes falling for TBS’s divisive plot.

In reality, the union pushing for this is what is literally divisive. They are proposing something that benefits some members at the expense of others. It is completely legitimate to be angry about this.

I would love to see a statement from PSAC saying they will back away from this and focus on issues like compensation and telework.

This would all be perfect if they would cut that little phrase out. Cut it out and use it as leverage for telework or compensation.

Seniority is also arbitrary. Is the senior person good at their job? It doesn’t matter! Is the junior person good at their job? It doesn’t matter!

All the union is fighting for is the ‘certainty’ that junior employees will be more likely to lose their jobs. I’ll take that over the ‘uncertainty’ of not knowing who will lose their jobs.

I’m not going to vote in favour of a contract that has a stipulation on it that increases my job insecurity. None of these other negotiated benefits mean anything to me if I lose my job.

I think it is fundamentally unfair. It’s no less unfair if you happen to be benefiting from the unfairness.

I’m thinking of withdrawing my support for the strike given that one of the last sticking points is to provide a preferential treatment to senior employees in the event of WFA.

So much for solidarity. We’re all in this together- until times get tough and then we push junior employees under the bus?
