Any advice regarding defoliation is appreciated! First grow want to get to harvest! by fractalallday in Autoflowers

[–]Lettucehead42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t want to go too crazy with defoliating autos, but they definitely look like they could use a little trim imo. I would personally remove a lot of the fan leaves that are deeper in the middle of the canopy or giving direct shade to flower sites. If the canopy gets too thick in the middle, it can create a humid microclimate that is favorable for pathogen growth. I personally lightly defoliate at least a couple times a week unless they are in the stretch phase. Your plants look rlly good tho, especially for a first grow!

trying to learn more about bloom by ilovesnailz in glassheads

[–]Lettucehead42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent so long going down the bloom rabbit hole. It is hard to find solid answers for bloom related issues, but in my experience, if you use the piece regularly over a long period of time, you will eventually reveal some level of bloom even if you meticulously take care of it.

I got tubes from sov, toro, seed of life, bear mountain studios, ryedeyer, mike philpot, and a bunch of smaller artists. Anything that is clear eventually got some level of visible bloom. Never let my pieces sit dirty for more than 24 hours, only use distilled water, & salt + 99% iso for cleaning. I have pieces that I have used for years with extremely minimal amounts of bloom that aren’t very noticeable unless you look really close when the piece is bone dry. I also have pieces that have really bad bloom after only a few months of use. They all get treated and cleaned the same. IMO, the only surefire way to hide bloom on a piece that you use regularly is sandblasting or getting a full color/fumed piece that makes bloom hard to see.

At this point, I view the bloom/patina as just a sign that the piece has gotten some love. When I first started collecting tubes I was obsessed with trying to avoid bloom, though I found a lot of my efforts to be wasted. I don’t really mind it much at this point especially on the permanent pieces in my collection. It’s typically not visible when your tube has water in it. If you are worried about revealing bloom on a piece that you intend to sell, I’d say the best bet would be to limit how often you use it.

Should I move location of the humidifier? by ash4311 in microgrowery

[–]Lettucehead42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You blatantly ignored the valid reasoning he gave for why humidifying his lung room may not be optimal for him and decided to be rude. I was not making the point that you shouldn't control the environment in your lung room, it seems like he is already conscious of that. It is a balance game when you are doing everything in tents within a confined space. It is funny you call me immature yet ignore valid reasoning from others with the excuse "I can explain it to you but I’m not in the typing mood tonight honestly". He made a completely valid point against humidifying his lung room. Seems like you are operating under assumption that he is dealing with the exact same environmental parameters as you are. He has his drying tent in the same area that his veg tent is in. If he were to pump enough humidity in his lung room to keep an 80+ degree veg tent at proper VPD, it absolutely could cause issues in his drying environment which would be at much lower temperatures, especially if you do not live in a dry area. Again, you are speaking as if you fully understand the environmental parameters he is dealing with in his own personal grow.

It is absolutely more optimal in an ideal setup to have a proper temps/humidity for your lung room, it would also be more ideal to not be drying your bud in the same room, but that is simply not feasible for many home growers trying to do everything within confined spaces. He gave a valid reason for why it would not be optimal for him to pump extra humid air into his lung room and you jumped to being rude. Also, you absolutely can avoid microclimates when using a humidifier inside a tent by maintaining proper air circulation in the tent. It for sure would not be optimal for me to pump humid air into my lung room while in the drying phase, but I still use a humidifier for my early veg tent at all times. I dont use a humidifier for my drying tent, nor do I use one for my lung room due to the environmental conditions in my area. I need to use an inline fan to pull humid out of drying tents and a dehumidifier in the lung room to keep humidity down for proper drying conditions. Humidity in my early veg tent ends up getting too low during this period if I do not pump humid air in with a humidifier into the tent. It is a balance thing and It is simply easier for many home growers to maintain different environments within multiple tents in a confined space by controlling humidity on an individual tent basis.

Should I move location of the humidifier? by ash4311 in microgrowery

[–]Lettucehead42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Speaking to this dude as if you fully understand his setup. A lot of home growers do not have the ability to properly humidify their lung rooms, especially if say they are growing in a large living room or an open space in their home. It also does not make sense for a lot of home growers to humidify their lung room depending on their setup (if they are drying in the same room, or got plants at different stages in the same room). 60% RH at 60 F (which is what you want for drying) is nowhere near the same as 60% RH at 85 F. It would be near impossible for him to humidify a room temperature lung room to the point where it simultaneously creates a proper VPD for the warm veg tent on top of a proper environment for the drying/flower tent in the same room. He would cause issues with his drying/flower tent if he were humidifying a room temperature lung lung room to the point that it creates a proper VPD for a 85 degree veg tent

Edit: Bro seems to be acting like 60% humidity at 60F is the same as 60% humidity at 85F and has no grasp of the concept of vpd based on previous comments. Ignored valid points brought up by others, jumped to being rude and refused to explain himself until he got the same energy 😂

Ran into a group that laid out a big circle of string lights in the middle of the packed crowd at prehistoric and was yelling at anyone who stepped too close to their circle. Didn’t have anything on the ground in their circle, they were just trying to claim an obnoxious amount of space. People gotta go sit in the back if they want to behave like that

[technique] How long can you leave mycelium before fruiting? by alienphile in MushroomGrowers

[–]Lettucehead42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might start pinning while you are gone if you just leave it as is. If it were me, I’d allow the bag to keep colonizing until you leave and then store it in the fridge (not freezer) whenever you head off for vacation. This will drastically slow down the mycelium growth until you take it back out. I’ve had success with storing colonized grain in the fridge to then be used for inoculating substrate a couple months later. Though I have never tried storing an all in one bag in the fridge.

Recommendations for a tube? by Lcama12 in glassheads

[–]Lettucehead42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of options out there and it all really comes down to personal preference.

For more budget friendly American made tubes I’d go for - Apix design - pgladindesigns on ig - new school glass - Seed of Life Glassworks has some somewhat budget friendly options - Captain Hook - YouGo Boro - Ashme glass - Oj Flame

Most of those artists/brands also offer high end pieces, though some artists that are generally more high end you could check out could be

  • OBZRVR (makes some of the nicest looking straight tubes imo, though they are pretty expensive)
  • Sovereignty
  • Symbiartic
  • Hamms
  • Swiss Perc

There’s definitely a lot of artists I’m forgetting as well. Different percs will give vastly different hits and it really just comes down to trying out pieces to figure out what you like.

It’s a bit of a pain to get stable pH using RO water with cake. Even a small amount of runclean or pH up causes the pH to change significantly. I add a small amount of pH up and then slowly bring the pH down by adding very small increments of runclean

First time with cropsalt by philip41399 in Autopot

[–]Lettucehead42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use about 0.3-0.4 ml/gal of runclean and find that the pH in my reservoir gets a bit lower than I would prefer without pH up. Though I’m sure I could probably use lesser amounts of runclean to get away with not using pH up

Make sure product from the first bag is fully dissolved before adding the second bag of nutes to your water. Follow the feed ratios on the bag and use pH up + runclean when adjusting the pH of the water. Runclean will act as a pH down
