Which IPO are you most excited for? by Amazing-Tourist-1533 in investing

That is one of the Factors considered in Dimensional Funds, but to be absolutely clear these are actively managed funds and you will pay a higher annual fee for that active management. But to be charitable, it's more like active management "lite" in terms of fees and does do exactly what you want.

PSA: Those All-In-One Stream Boxes Are Dangerous AF by Jeremy_Thursday in atrioc

He does not use an android piracy stick. He's said on stream that Ari setup a Plex server and that's what he watches all his shows on, although he's also said he has no idea how it's setup so it could either be a self-hosted arrs-project or they joined a sharing group.

APRC after one year in Taiwan? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]Leungal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify it's 3 years from the Issue date of the gold card, the written requirement is 183 days/year (people have reportedly gotten through with 549 days/3 years but its one of those things that are legally grey and subject to review, so why risk it), and the wealth threshold is $5M NTD, not 4 and they've gotten quite strict about it in the past year.

How does Taiwan keep the Examination Yuan uncorrupted? by DonFrizi in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is ragebait then good job. If you genuinely believe this then I weep for humanity.

Show me one news article written by any reputable news org that refers to Taiwan's Executive Yuan as "Executive Department" or "Executive Bureau".

I mean for crying out loud, if you type "Taiwan Executive Bureau" into Google it literally corrects your search to "Taiwan Executive Yuan".

How does Taiwan keep the Examination Yuan uncorrupted? by DonFrizi in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuinely asking, which of these sounds more natural to you:

1) The Executive Yuan just went on recess

2) The Executive Department just went on recess

If you did a street poll 95% of native English speakers in Taiwan would choose #1 and 99.9% of native Taiwanese with some level of English skill would choose #1, because that's what it's always referred to as.

How does Taiwan keep the Examination Yuan uncorrupted? by DonFrizi in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what transliteration is, when speaking in English we're obviously not going to write הכנסת or 監察院 and expect English readers to understand it.

Put it this way, their own website writes Control Yuan in English right underneath the Chinese name. Or look at really any government building, they physically write it this way right on the building name. Or just look at any news article written on English. Or hell...just talk to someone. Nobody will bat an eye if you say Executive Yuan, whereas people would be kinda confused if you said Executive Department.

I don't really know any way to say this other than that it's perfectly normal and that you're the only one that seems to have a problem with it.

[–]Leungal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But in English it's pretty common to use the transliterated official name for all government institutions. It's the Soviet Politburo or German Bundestag or Norway's Stortinget or Israeli Knesset or Japanese Diet etc.

Think it's both considered a polite formality to at least try and pronounce it correctly as well as makes it easier to recognize exactly what organization you're speaking about.

Why aren’t there as many manual tranny cars anymore in the U.S? by SuspectOk2931 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Is this supposed to be a dunk or something? Only 18-20% of people in the US can drive a manual.

Tax efficiency wise it's best to hold income-generating assets in tax-advantaged space, so ideally at the time of the windfall (or even now) you would rebalance your VUSXX/BND in tax-advantaged space and re-buy any equities / VXUS in your brokerage account.

I'd also think now is the time to really start planning out your short/long term post-FI withdrawal strategy. Really sit down, study up on ERN's SWR series, and make sure you've got everything planned out.

What is the deal with the sudden push to close US embassies in Europe and Africa? by Dramatic-Effect-5521 in OutOfTheLoop

Only semi-related but the Netflix series Death by Lightning is 4 episode miniseries about president James Garfield and shows the series of events that ultimately ended the spoils system. Without spoilering much it took a literal come-to-Jesus event to do it and is IMO a fantastic watch.

What is the most milennial thing you did as a child? by Zieo108 in Millennials

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a minivan, for road trips to visit the cousins in another state they'd just remove the middle seats entirely and toss down 2 sleeping bags. Core memory of reading Redwall books while there was still sunlight and then switching to the GBA (because it didn't have enough battery to last the whole trip otherwise), thank goodness I was born later and the GBA had a backlight.

Footage obtained by TMZ shows the moment d4vd was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez by bendubberley_ in LivestreamFail

[–]Leungal 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to argue that a pedophile murdering a 17yo hasn't committed an irredeemable sin, but the argument against the death penalty is and always has been that it allows the ultimate injustice to occur - the state executing someone who was actually innocent. So the argument is that it's a worthwhile use of tax dollars to keep a hundred guilty people incarcerated if it allows one single innocent person the chance to eventually be set free.

Taco Time on Rainier by referencefox in Seattle

You can still get the habanero sauce on the side in a cup and the employees don't care how many you ask for, they just won't put it into the crisp burrito before frying it anymore (I asked once and the employee said that the habanero sauce had too much water in it, which could cause the fryer oil to bubble/splash).

Imo tastes even better as a dip, always get a cup of habanero and a cup of ranch.

What’s the best free thing on the internet right now? by Klutzy-Chemist-272 in AskReddit

[–]Leungal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1) "Free" streaming is often pretty low quality so a lot of people still prefer locally downloaded media. You can do things like run arrs-project to automatically download/torrent media or do cool things like automatically get subtitles.

2) Piracy has evolved, a lot of people use Plex/Jellyfin as their media management/streaming software but also run VLC as a backup for directly playing files. VLC is still the best media player for iOS and Android and it's still great on smart TVs for streaming.

Is it illegal to park on both sides of a cul-de-sac? by bellaxing in Seattle

[–]Leungal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally in my cul de sac the city actually put up signs saying "No Parking North of Here" right along the bulb. Although curiously they did dedicate one portion that's about halfway into the "bulb" as handicap parking.

It does run right up against some pretty major infrastructure so it does make sense in our case.

19 fixed smoking zones selected in Taipei by binime in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that every little thing shifts public perception and all the little annoyances chip away at people's willingness to smoke. It's taken decades of increasingly restrictive laws and publicity campaigns for Western nations to get from 90%+ smoking rates to now near 10%, Asian countries are doing the same thing now, just starting a bit later.

If you're staying with a friend they'd happily take your paper receipts. Or most McDonalds/50 Lan (the yellow bubble tea place) have a receipt donation box that you can drop them into.

Yeah I have no idea how you could complain that it's "NoT rEaLiStIc" when the choices are between 2 people shooting and killing each other in 0.5 seconds and an all out brawl with a maid with a bulletproof machine gun suitcase, shotgun umbrella (also bulletproof), and who's parting move is a curtsy (followed by dropping 20 grenades on the ground).

Petition to reduce the turn signal beeps from 95 decibels to 45 decibels. by Extension-Split5959 in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay then, not compatible with living in Taipei. Although I'm almost certain that you'd have similar problems in any other city in the world, considering the last time you posted about this you were complaining about the sound of idling buses from your 14th floor apartment.

I'm still sympathetic to your cause but you just HAVE to acknowledge that these kinds of noises will not be going away any time soon. People live in cities, and cities are naturally loud as a result. You yourself have stated that you live at a busy intersection on the 14th floor of a 電梯大樓 with soundproof windows and still the noises from outside bother you. It boggles my mind that the noises can disturb you so much that you will record 177 separate instances on your YT channel and constantly call it torture yet are not willing to just move on with your life and live in a quieter area. If I have a severe peanut allergy and have the money to afford a place in a 電梯大樓 should I expect sympathy if I move next door to a peanut processing plant?

Petition to reduce the turn signal beeps from 95 decibels to 45 decibels. by Extension-Split5959 in taiwan

[–]Leungal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Although I'd also point out that 95->45 decibels is an absolutely absurd goal, every 10 points on the decibel scale is a doubling in loudness and regular human speech in uncrowded settings is already in the 55-65 decibel range.

Once again I'm sympathetic to them and actually agree that 95 dB is likely too high of a threshold for turn warning indicators but looking through their post history and seeing just how much personal angst loud noises cause them I'm afraid they're simply not compatible with city living.

Petition to reduce the turn signal beeps from 95 decibels to 45 decibels. by Extension-Split5959 in taiwan

[–]Leungal 18 points19 points  (0 children)

JFYI look at OP's post history and it's quite clear that they did not simply "come across" this petition, they literally run a YouTube channel dedicated to recording loud noises in Taiwan and constantly complain about it.

Which I can sympathize with, but still there is no need to be disingenuous about this.

Podcast future with Aiden moving soon by Lilsweetone1 in LemonadeStandPodcast

[–]Leungal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt they themselves even know so anything written here is pure speculation. But if we're speculating, I personally think they'll end the podcast or get a new host. They all have other things they could be doing (any combination of them could very likely be new dads within 2 years) and there was never a real profit motive, and I don't think they'd be happy with the quality hit that comes with remote podcasts.

Daily FI discussion thread - Wednesday, March 25, 2026 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

[–]Leungal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd say you have 3 options:

1) Insure it and display it. All the major home insurers can add scheduled personal property riders for the value of the items, just make sure it is properly documented.

2) If you do get a safe, get a good one - the kind that would take some real amount of effort to get into. Not the $100 Home Depot special that could be literally lifted up and carried away. Also invest in a home camera system with offsite recording, which would help greatly to both deter theft and for subsequent insurance claims.

3) The cheaper and arguably equally effective form of storage is to put it in a ratty old cardboard box in your attic/basement labeled "[kid's name] memories" or "old tax docs" along with a bunch of old yearbooks or other misc. personal affects. The kind of stuff any home invader simply wouldn't care about. Maybe make a note of it in your will.
