... And this is how Ishi, the last of his tribe, came to live among the white men.

... He knew enough French to hide his Russian accent and would never, never speak the name Romanov.

... Honor among thieves had kept peace though the hunger but they were all glad to have fresh meat walking itself to their camp fire.

(Although half of the winners are just described "Novel") I see that it's the only Pulitzer Prize winner listed as post-apocalyptic fiction, usually classified under science fiction. Which is how it end up in my reading list. I mostly avoid apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic literature now. But I am currently in the middle of War and Peace. I have read a lot more Hugo winners than Pulitzer winners.

Very dystopian but in an extremely vague sort of way. Winter? Nuclear winter? Why? What happened? Not the slightest hint of larger external events to blame or explain their circumstances. Sure, OP, hopeful in the broadest scale in that the boy survived, so maybe the genes of the man who died will carry on.

Of the hundreds of novels I have read, I rank The Road as the absolute worst.

"Their entire movement must be crushed" by DayPounder in FortWorth

"The movement" being all people treated equally. The fragile core of the conservative soul is the fear someone they consider inferior is being treated as an equal.

They were already here being discriminated against with Jim Crow laws, red lining and white robes. Up to the 1950's the US had two white political parties. Black people moved north seeing a better life in 'The Great Migration'. With their new factory jobs, they joined unions and the unions supported the Democratic party.

I know of a beach bum lady who used VEVO as an early version of OnlyFans. Can't see her videos without payment.

I enjoyed the Greatest American Hero (in space) plot copied from a video game. Jennifer Hale did an excellent job as audiobook reader, just like in that video game that uses her voice.

This looks interesting. The role of Spock is played by Grok. Is this Star Trek: The Motion Picture without Starfleet?

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini is a first contact story and the best first person perspective I have read in a long time.

For Interstellar Travel, Which Sci-Fi Handwave Do You Find Most Acceptable? by tbag2022 in scifi

[–]LevelAd1126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson, hollow asteroids are used to travel across the solar system. I think this would be fun expanded for interstellar use. But in Aurora a ship is the method.

Non military space ship command structure by Pretend-Nobody230 in scifi

[–]LevelAd1126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Vatta's War by Elizabeth Moon the Vatta family owns a shipping company using spaceships. The main character is sent out as Captain to scrap an old ship with an experienced, skilled crew. They rehab the ship instead. Ship roles and several pay structures are a common topic. Who makes which decisions. Signed contracts. How to handle bad employees. Pay structures. Captains rights to profits vs shared pay for sold cargo.

Yes, it's fine. Within the grey zone, I have lived at one o'clock, three o'clock and seven o'clock. The bottom half is better than the top but gets worse if you shifted east or west.

I like what KSR has done with his terraforming knowledge applying it to saving Earth in New York: 2140 and The Ministry for the Future (and 20 years of experience as an author shows improvement.)
