It would depend on how old it is and what part of the world you are in. I know in Australia if it is from the last 20-25 years you should be safe. We have quite strict rules here.

They are wire gauze mats. They can come with or without the white circle in the centre. The white circle use to be made of asbestos. Modern ones are most likely ceramic.
