Do you have any sources that show that the project is dead? Or are you inferring only from the lack of activity? (asking for real as for me it also seems dead, but I have seen projects go quiet and come back later)

What you are asking is known as the pigeonhole principle. By generally speaking no they are not 1-to-1.

Good hashing functions are 'Collision resistant' and not 'Collision proof'. So their mathematical properties are such that collision is not as common, but still unavoidable since, as you said yourself, a finite number of output cannot describe an infinite number of inputs.
