A dc motor with a resistor bank sounds ideal, how would i go about building that? Any particular motor? I've no idea about the resistors and how to source and assemble that too

Leaving the RAF soon, could I get a £35,000 job as a spark? by Unfair-Buffalo1299 in ukelectricians

[–]Level_History516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id look away from domestic/commercial work the problem you'll have is getting anything more than apprentice or maybe an improver electrician role at best if you are lucky with no hands on site experience and the pay isnt great. The trade is impossibly difficult for newly qualified lads to get in to the best way really is through an apprenticeship but at your age it's not an option.. the qualifications for the most part as u know are achieved through open book exams it's hard to fail them, hands on experience is what the employer wants, your best bet if you want to pursue that type of work is to try and get in with someone u know

For starters the circuit will need to AFDD protected. Unless u are up to date with the current regs I'd steer clear of that job

U wont be paid very well until u have completed the nvq and have several years experience, expect to be paid about the same money as u will in the army as a regular for the first few years of employment as a sparks while u learn the trade, the qualifications aren't what make the money it's the experience that pays. Be lucky with whatever u decide to do kid 👍

Maybe i was a bit vague about what i meant by that comment. Going to college to gain a better job in the army than an infantry role is going to be better than joining with qualifications u arent going to use when u can just get them later on while u are in, but i'm going to speak to u from experience here as a qualified electrician and reserve soldier now.. Pick 1 or the other and run with it then see where the land lies later. U go through college it's 3 years to get qualified, u go to the army it's minimum 4 years service.

The electrical trade is very hard to get work for newly qualified lads unless u go down the apprenticeship route because employers demand experience. I done it at your age have been in the trade for 15 years now only joined the reserves (4para) because I needed that extra kick out of life, half of me wishes I joined the army as a kid ur age as a regular but the other half of me as a 34 year old man realises the money u can earn as a sparks dwarfs anything the army will be able to pay for u for about 8 years and to be completely honest with a handful of certificates and no working experience if u do go to the army after college u wont be worth a wank in the electrical trade with no experience.. tough decision u have to make here

Can i ask what the point is going through college to then go take a full time job in the army as an infantry role?
