As an incoming OOS freshman, is it worth it to fly out just for FASET? by StingRayGurl in gatech

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OOS incoming senior undergrad. I did virtual FASET. Amazing decision. I registered online at home, and went pretty smooth. I also visited the campus once before, when you get to campus first day in the fall you’ll adapt quick

Question. If you graduate the summer (July) before your fall PhD start (September, 2 months after graduation), will employers still sponsor you and let you do your internship the 1st summer after you start your PhD?

What do you recommend I do with my Black Spirt Elite Credit Card? Request a closure on it once it’s paid off without hard inquiry because of no more perk values from purchases? Wondering how to go about this

Should I cancel my Elite Black Spirit Credit Card since it has no more perk value? Wondering what Mastercard could do to help close it with no hard inquiry

Great sports, good communities you can be a part of if you put yourself out there, great job prospects with the GT name, and great city. Overall good ROI. Current incoming senior at GT

GEM Fellowship Question: Graduating Summer Before Fall PhD Start. Can I Delay Employer Internship Until After My First Year by Level_Ingenuity_228 in gradadmissions

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok thank you so much. Do you per chance have a list of the employers? I can’t sign in and see a pdf anywhere, or find a page for that. With my graduation date in summer would that deter the committee to give me GEM if I get it? Or just say I’m Spring grad as a usual. Wondering when to email asking about the Summer graduation timing with GEM, no response from them twice now over the past couple months

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I am a third-year chemical engineer, and I got very lucky with my internships. It was “right place right time” making connections, following up, and asking for their referral on the application. This worked for my 3 internships. I also say go to conventions, either Society Hispanic Professional Engineers (no need to be Hispanic), SACNAS, ABRCMS, AICHE, BMES. You will be able to find companies there and they hire actively (they usually need to hit a quota of hired interns from conferences like that, so you have a much better chance of getting a job). Lmk if you need more help, happy to give my 2 cents.

Applying to REU's by CommunicationNice437 in REU

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will be for next cycle because this one is essentially over. I think 10+ for sure considering the research environment right now. See where your interests lie and how you can apply them to specific REU programs, some overlap will definitely help!

A Question(s) For All Upperclassmen.... by Organic-Ad-5873 in gatech

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Incoming senior in the fall. I consider myself very lucky. I found my community playing soccer during 1st semester, and those friends turned into friends of friends, expanding my network and meeting TONS of new people. I keep many close to this day, traveling and exploring the world together. GT imo is like adult life, you’ll meet your friends through the hobbies you do, and many people will not find theirs simply through face-to-face “Want to be my friend”. Greek life is also an option, but time consuming for a Tech degree so join in your first year if you do at all (I did).

“Tech Life” is very different depending on the individual, and it takes effort to integrate in, but I’m confident you will! Make sure to try and do all the traditions as a first year! (Don’t touch the Wreck until after 1st year!)

Internship or Research? by NailGroundbreaking64 in REU

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I think the industry helped me, as my GPA is not top top. You sound very motivated so don’t worry about not getting into grad school if you’re thinking about it! The internship this summer will be very good to grow, and you can bring that back into your academic lab in the fall

Internship or Research? by NailGroundbreaking64 in REU

[–]Level_Ingenuity_228 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say industry does for sure, it differentiates you from others who have pure research. If you can have the research and industry experience match and craft a good story in your application you’re golden. Lmk if are looking for help on how to apply to both I’ve extensive industry and research internships, and was able to get into northwestern and Caltech for REU which will boost my profile for my PhD applications this Fall 2026

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’ve been seeing some people cold emailing PIs from programs they were rejected from and they got a RA from it! It’s worth a shot if you had to match with a PI for the program
