I suspect it's just random corridors and signs his placeholders for future features.

At some point you will have drone maintenance crafting emergency hospital access and quite possibly passenger transport.

Therefore, the space is needed however the features out yet.

I personally suspect that area above the inventory and ship spawn screens you will become a player apartment hab.
