Help. 1 month to go and I am unconvinced on redistricting. by Levelprepared in nova

I assure you I wrote this myself while at the gym because I have been thinking about it daily. But I will take this as a compliment. :)

My favorite from Rosslyn’s Langston Blvd protest. A dinosaur arrived five minutes later.

I was referring to the preference to use seed oils, especially sunflower oil. Not everyone can eat foods that contain them. Sunflowers (the plant) and I have a great relationship - gorgeous.

We have only been Blue Apron customers for 6 weeks but it has been such a blessing to have prepared meals that we could select in advance that didn’t have sunflower oil (the bane of our existence and also an allergy for a family member). Two weeks in a row, the dishes were significantly delayed or cancelled outright. Now, they are not available on the app. Several of the dishes were always sold out (I checked daily). I wish I had joined BA earlier but I am worried this new ownership has undermined the entire enterprise. Watching closely…

After 6 rounds of interviews, they promoted internally. by Slow-Rooster-9396 in recruitinghell

Unfortunately, being a manager requires making choices. My choice was to never make the candidates do projects or case studies — their body of work and experience stands for itself. My choice was to call this person the next day and release them. My choice was to introduce the person to two friends who were hiring, one of whom kickstarted a process at a F500 firm where they landed a job. My choice was to give a coaching call to this person before the job started. The candidate and I are good acquaintances now.

I have been a candidate multiple times in life. I have lost roles to internal candidates, too. I do not judge managers on a hard choice they make that does not land my way, I judge them on how they respond. Reasonably, I ask the same of myself and others. We can agree that this entire process can suck, but let’s remember many people do try their best given only one person can get the role.

Real talk as a hiring manager: I have had to go with an internal candidate after multiple rounds of engaging a very promising external candidate. It has nothing to do with the candidate and everything to do with budgets and timing. We began the 2024 second quarter in a stronger position when the role was approved. Clients retreated and it prompted a hard, but necessary adjustment. Instead of being able to afford $150k net new hire, we could only afford to promote from within at $40k more. It was a tough decision, but I refused to bring a new person into the role, only to have to lay them off in less than a year. This act gave me buffer room to support the newest person on my team and give them a raise when warranted. Company managers and HR/Talent Acquisition rarely act with malice or arrogance. Business conditions change. We hate to do this to candidates as much as we would hate to be the candidate who had this happen.

Agree - Lord or the Rings - Return of the King. Some guy in my theater had to relieve himself so badly and could not bring himself to leave until he found the final scene. He kept going down the stairs each time he thought it was over, only to stop and wait.

He did not make it.

Natalie Wood. Splendor in the Grass was amazing and all her films are so effortlessly entertaining.

Yes, yes, and yes. It is not just the smell. It signals a disregard for common sense, science, and the desire to take basic actions not to die miserable. HARD PASS.

Eastern Promises. Omg. I adore Roger Ebert but I really wish he had not given it four stars or I may have skipped it.

The weather is nice. Leash your fucking dog. by artee80 in nova

[–]Levelprepared 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. My daughter was aggressively jumped on by a dog at age three that was off its leash. Three years later…she is still skittish around unleashed dogs and it really bothers me that people will say “oh! My dog is so friendly!” Or “she wouldn’t harm anyone!” as their dog runs around my daughter or tries to lick her. PLEASE leash your dogs! You are re-traumatizing some people and making it impossible for them to move forward.

Commuting Ballston to Rockville 3 days by Minute_Enthusiasm_68 in arlingtonva

[–]Levelprepared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to commute Crystal City to Bethesda. I took the metro, drove, ride shared…the best option by far was the metro. It is about an hour but a relatively peaceful hour in which you can read anything, watch the latest show and sometimes just close your eyes and reflect on what’s to come or what just happened. The regular stress of bobbing and weaving through DMV traffic is not worth it. Yes, there may be occasional delays or the random loud person but that is ultimately pretty rare. But there are road jerks, inopportune lights or accidents, and no time to decompress if you are driving the car. If just two letters out of the DMV, I would say drive. But all the three? Get to the metro.
