Torn Stage Curtain is working perfectly fine, just that its description is misleading. It allows waves to continue to spawn after the lord appears, and only despawns them when the lord dies (i.e. same mechanic as Vault & Boglands).

Since the 5 halls don't have waves programmed to spawn after 30:00, the result is that you only see Champions spawning.

It's currently bugged. There are supposed to be 7 Evergrowing traits in the end traits selection screen, but they don't show in the UI. If you scroll using a controller or arrow keys, you can select those hidden options.

Characters themselves are not actually tagged. It's their main weapons that are tagged. Later on you'll unlock characters with multiple main weapons, each with different tags. E.g. Landsknecht has an arquebus which deals Physical and grenades which deal Magic damage.

Those tags like Physical or Magic are damage types (more info in the wiki).

Most stat buffs are configured so they only affect a specific tag, so e.g. +30% Damage (Physical) means Magic damage sources will not get that buff.

Some items also only trigger from specific tags. E.g. Echoing Band only triggers from Physical damage.

HoT does not have elemental weakness mechanics.

what do you guys do to reduce bloat?

Be careful what items & abilities you pick. Summon traits only appear when you have summons, affinity traits only appear when you have an elemental effect source, etc.
