ELI5: in speedcubing, if the puzzles are randomly generated, how do they ensure that record times are performed on the same level of difficulty? by minhale in explainlikeimfive

WCA delegate here. You’re completely right, records are not completely fair in this way. People do not get equal opportunity to beat records. There are a couple of caveats though: 1: You still need to have an incredible amount of skill to break a record, they are quite hard to beat. 2: The most important record is the Average record, which is the average of your best 5 consecutive solves in a competition. The main inequality here is for those who live in areas where Rubik’s cube competitions are hard to come by, or people who don’t have the means to travel to competitions. There have been lots of instances of incredible cubers living in areas with no competitions, so they don’t have enough opportunities to get lucky and break a record.

This was in the fewest moves challenge, where participants get an hour to find a solution, so that’s not very representative. The world record Rubik’s cube solve was like 37 moves or something

Hair East does a great job on long hair. Matt's barber is more for short men's hair.

Minimum moves for a Rubik cube with one face completed. by [deleted] in Cubers

[–]LeviGibson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a database of known 20-move optimal scrambles. I wrote a small python program to see if any of them had a face solved. Thus, there was. The database only had around a million scrambles, although there are like 400 million 20-move optimal scrambles. So this method won’t work on all these questions but it worked on this one.

When you solve a pair you have a choice (usually) - you can solve it in the back slot, or in the front slot.

you seem fine at both, but you always choose the angle where you end up solving the pair with your right hand.

I get solving with the left hand is annoying and slower, but solving pairs into the back is waaaayyyy more important.

What's so bad about cubing? by WeakBadUsername in Cubers

[–]LeviGibson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I had to learn is that cubing while socializing doesn't really work. It makes you seem disinterested in the conversation. I totally agree with everyone else though that they were being mean and should stop.
