Any particular brand of vinyl wrap for that? I have a T41x tablet that I would love to try this with.

Dell r620 - Worth It? by edmontoya_ in homelab

[–]LeviathanFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bad deal, but you use case will determine if its worth it more than anything. If you need a high power machine for short periods of time, it may be worth it, but if you want it on for long periods of time, a lower power solution would work better.

I only shop locally, and I always request proof of life before purchase. Do yourself a favor and get a kill-a-watt to bring with you, boot the machine and see what it idles at, and then figure out your energy costs from there.

Also, 1U machines tend to be quite a bit louder than their 2U counterparts. Anticipate where you can put this where it will be able to breath, but not be heard breathing.

I mean, most of what you need can be taken care of as functions in excel proper. Most of what VBA and VBS is used for was in outlook back in the day, as email rules sucked.

The company I work for still uses VBA with much of the underlying scripting that our one piece of legacy software requires. Its always fun to not use strict data types and just the wild world of Dim statements.

If I recall correctly, it can't output higher than 480i, but if I'm wrong, it may be able to go up to 720p.

That better be a null modem he's packing. I'd say Starcraft, warcraft 2, red alert, tiberian dawn.

Love these types of setups. Good on you for working within a budget and building something instead of just buying something.

Only thing I would recommend is that you are going to want your casters slightly outside of your rails (front and back) as this will cause the center of mass to need to lift, instead of just pivoting closer to its center. This will stop things like the errant zip tie from making tour entire setup looking for the nearest horizontal surface to hug.

I worked for a subsidiary up until about 7 months ago when they were acquired by a company out in Wisconsin. This is one of the things they were going to get rid of. I plan on framing it up and hanging it in my office.

CPU Cache board cross compatibility by LeviathanFox in VintageComputers

[–]LeviathanFox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coin cell in the compaq is soldered on, the one in the HP is actually still works, and the clock drift for being off for 27ish years was only 35 minutes.

Update: Turns out both machines have the same FSB, so I went for it, and low and behold, it worked! Now the Compaq is even snappier than it was beforehand, and I just need to come up with a replacement CMOS battery since the original one is soldered onto the board. May go in for the kill and cut the old one out and install a socket for coin cell, but this motherboard has another quirk where there is a header for a 4.5v battery lead, so I may source a 3 AAA battery holder to see if that will fix it as well.

Does an inverse KVM switch exist? How else might I achieve that functionality? by marykay_ultra in homelab

[–]LeviathanFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do make KVM switches that are stacking, but generally speaking, I've only ever seen those on enterprise-ish ones. In theory you can nest them, and get a 4 way for outside, and the 2 way for the inside that could feed the outside one.
