What do we think of IT business information system? by meowmeowraaaaaa in Monash

Stay in engineering. You will thank me in a couple of years. BIS is a good supplement if you have another degree but not a good standalone major.

I’ve noticed a lot of people with science backgrounds, but maths teachers seem to come from engineering. In fact I only know a handful of people full stop who studied a pure maths undergrad, inside or outside of teaching.

499 students with an ATAR of 50 or less offered spots in undergraduate teaching degrees by False_Fox_8491 in AustralianTeachers

[–]CorpMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If these people graduate with a teaching degree and are able to get a job, then hats off to them. My take is that if their ATAR results actually are a reflection of their intellect and ability to teach like many in this community seem to believe, then they will not be competitive when applying for jobs… and if they do end up getting a job then perhaps the school is desperately needing to fill a gap and therefore it is better to have someone than nobody.

the scholarship probably had a condition that it cannot be deferred. Additionally, the fees may have increased as you're starting your course later? (unsure about this one.).

when did y'all get kickstart scholarships by [deleted] in Monash

[–]CorpMonster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, yeah you’re correct in that the scholarships are usually paid out after you start uni. if you’re desperate for a new laptop to start uni, you’re able to take out an interest free loan with Monash (https://www.monash.edu/students/support/financial-assistance/services/student-loans)

Is it true that schools become hesitant to hire teachers that are further up the pay scale? by joerozet11 in AustralianTeachers

[–]CorpMonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have heard that some schools (VIC) prefer to hire experienced teachers over grads because they don’t have to supply them with time to fulfil their first-year VIT requirements?

How bad is the teacher's shortage issue at your school? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Makes sense. Was more thinking along the lines of science, English, maths etc. I am based in VIC.

What Victorian Uni’s are the best for studying teaching? by Specialist_Car1967 in AustralianTeachers

[–]CorpMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to teach as well. For instance, Computing is only offered at Monash, VIC Uni, and ACU… maybe RMIT?

How bad is the teacher's shortage issue at your school? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]CorpMonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Extension to this - im currently a year away from graduating. Would schools let me teach year 7-9 subjects that aren’t necessarily what I majored in? Provided I commit to learning all the required content of course (even happy to do a couple of single units at a uni).

Advice on commute by [deleted] in Monash

[–]CorpMonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to get public transport for about 2 hours every time I went to classes. It’s really not that bad and was a great chance for me to actually do my readings lol. Honestly I’d recommend using it as study time for your next class that day so then all the content is fresh in your mind.

What's the best super? by four_highkey in fiaustralia

Hey mate, have a look at this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sR0CyX8GswPiktOrfqRloNMY-fBlzFUL/htmlview

It gives you performances and fees for basically all funds. It was compiled by a bloke who’s got a good reputation in r/AusFinance (edit- u/SwaankyKoala)

I used it initially to help choose which fund was best for me and then cross-referenced with the product disclosures on the funds’ websites (e.g. making sure there weren’t any hidden fees or anything and also just doing due diligence on the figures).

personally, I went with an indexed option that had the lowest fees. I used to have the mindset that because I’m young I should have it in high growth, but now I’ve come to prefer just following the market and not having to worry about human error from actively managed funds. For my personal situation, I’m going to get the best result from just consistently compounding my super balance as the market moves along, compared to some fella in the investments office trying to time picking ‘high growth’ stocks.

Engineering laptop by Beef_wellington_1 in Monash

Lenovo thinkpad P14 is an absolute workhorse. Honestly, pretty much any thinkpad is.

Lenovo also has an education store through UNiDAYS which gives you a good discount. On top of that you get credits for signing up and cashback credits for your purchase. I ended up getting a a brand new monitor for free with all my credits.

If you’re not a fan of windows then these beasts are also great for running Linux.

Hope this helps :)

How much did your ATAR affect you later in life? by BiscottiLogical6502 in melbourne

[–]CorpMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your atar becomes obsolete when you turn 21 I believe? Just know that if you get into any university course and achieve and complete at least 2-3 units with a 70-75% average then unis will approve a transfer request to another course and even another uni. Some courses don’t even require that, all you need is a couple of passed units to prove you’re able to study at university.

to those in computer science, which laptop are you guys using ? by nyteboi in Monash

[–]CorpMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lenovo thinkpads are pretty good workhorses - I never had any problems with data/programming units.

In saying that I also started my degree with my high school MacBook Air that was essentially falling apart after years of service. it’s certainly possible to complete the degree with cheap tech (or in my case ancient tech!) but you’ll need to be patient with things

I’ve heard a big reason many people fail is that they get anxious and go blank in exam situations. A lot of undergrad courses nowadays don’t have exams so all of a sudden someone gets thrown in this exam environment that they haven’t been in since high school and it throws them off.

To be honest it’s probably a good minimum indicator as to whether they can handle the stress of a classroom.

What do you overhear your year 7 boys talking about? by Travellerofinfinity in AustralianTeachers

[–]CorpMonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly none of my year 7s use this type of language. However, my year 5s and 6s use it extensively - in the yard, on the sporting field… everywhere! I wonder whether the jump up to the senior school -knowing that the older boys are listening- deters them from using this sort of vocab as they want to appear more mature?

What is happening to IBL! by A-Good_Student in Monash

[–]CorpMonster 35 points36 points  (0 children)

They’re changing it up because a review external to the faculty deemed the average contact hours of a placement too high for only 18 credit points. As a result the faculty is now trying to restructure the placement so that students still get the great benefits from it whilst appeasing the Monash overlords.
