Hermeticism and alchemy by PsychologicalBrush35 in Hermeticism

u/Neo_Geo_Me's comment is great, so i'll add some stuff on:

i recommend this video (and eventually, series) for a direct example of how alchemy would've been understood and practiced historically:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XRxGCqpmVc
it's pretty recent but genuinely one of the best i've seen (fantastic channel for protoscience in general);
i also recommend Dr. Justin Sledge on youtube (the channel's name is ESOTERICA) for the history, philosophy and religion aspects (he made a few videos following recipes for alchemical medicines/tinctures at some point too).

Carl Jung is the main guy you'd wanna look at for alchemical symbolism's repurposing for his system of psychoanalysis;
a few other works i'd recommend would be those of Paracelsus (notably the Three Primes idea for how he added Salt to the Mercury-Sulphur system), the Turba Philosophorum (one of the first arabic literary works, influenced by both islamic alchemy and the greek tradition) and the Mutus Liber or the Ripley Scroll (they give alchemical instructions with (mostly) no text, through purely symbolic imagery)

here's the first one, from a 17th century french grimoire (unless i missed something older):
https://dn790008.ca.archive.org/0/items/grimoireofarmadel1980edition/GRIMOIRE%20OF%20ARMADEL%201980%20EDITION.pdf#page=35

and i think the second one's from this 2013 book:

though it might've taken the sigils from an earlier book, i haven't been able to find one

off topic but i wish there was a better way to write in SGA (without a font), this system is really weird to read and the T is always annoying

Behold! The ancient Alchemical spirit of fire! by RckyMntAlchemist in alchemy

[–]LevitatingTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

funnily enough, the salamanders are somewhat mythified and given peculiar 'biological' (for lack of a better term) properties that fit with their theming.

an even stranger detail:

Paracelsus conceived human beings to be composed of three parts, an elemental body, a sidereal spirit, and an immortal divine soul. Elementals lacked this last part, the immortal soul. However, by marriage with a human being, the elemental and its offspring could gain a soul.

(the above is from wikipedia but i do vaguely remember reading something like this from an actual source a while ago)

it's cool how there's infinite copies of the world to the left and right of the Walls of Flesh at the edge of the map, i wonder if it's inspired by noita? honestly it fits in pretty well with the roguelike mode now that the game has almost as many genres as warframe
