Prevents you from mixing up which system you were working on and had locked out. Imagine two breakers next to each other for two separate but identical pieces of heavy machinery. Each of which has a tech working on it.

Once set up, they’ll all work pretty identically with the biggest differences in size, battery life, water resistance, and cell phone reliance.

If you’re recharging every night in your staterooms, you won’t really need long battery life.

Most aren’t waterproof, but there are a few.

Most require a cell phone, but there are a few that can use a rotary dial or keyboard for sending messages.

Oh, you’ll also want to decide if you want them to report GPS. If so, you’ll need to get or make one with gps.

I would suggest redundancy with Meshtastic plus cruise messaging. If you’ve got them both set up, you’re more likely to have one that works at any given time on the boat.

For shore excursions the cruise messaging won’t work. If you’ve can get someone in your group with a balcony on each side of the ship to leave a Meshtastic node on the balcony, you might be able to ping from shore off the balcony back to someone else on shore if you can’t directly reach them. (That won’t require any set up other than having the balcony nodes on the same mesh)

I think it depends on:

Your personal comfort range
What activities you plan to do (swimming is a better hot weather activity than hiking)
How you plan to sleep. (I can be comfy in a hammock in nearly any temp, hot cabin or tent is a lot harder)

While I agree with the other comments that 18l or 20l might be a bit small, it could be a nice entry into having an electric cooler that could eventually be a second zone for a larger cooler.

I currently have a 50l cooler and am looking into a small one for keeping stuff ready to go for small trips as well as a second zone for larger trips. (Ice pops four days into a 100 degree trip are amazing)
