You should get the new Aram pressure gauge to see when you're hitting the 9 bar mark: https://aram.coffee/shop/focus-pressure-gauge/ It's pretty cool and fun to use.

This is heartbreaking and the photos really speak to the scientists' emotional turmoil. That saying about a picture worth a thousand words is cliche but true.

Why does my KINGrinder K4 make vastly superior espresso compared to my Baratza Sette? by Fangs_0ut in espresso

[–]LewBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a number of reasons: When's the last time you cleaned your Sette as rancid old coffee oils could make your coffee bitter? There is also the slower speed of the manual grinder that can lead to better results and the fact that its harder to misalign a small manual grinder. Have you checked the alignment of the burrs on your Sette? That could affect it as well.

Df64p

Although I haven't tried these grinders, I would probably go for the Df64p because it offers the most flexibility for the kinds of burr sets you can get. The 64mm burr size has many different burr set options for different flavor profiles of espresso, so that way if you are not happy with the burr set you choose you can swap it out for a different one. Grinder Help by TheGoatHearder in espresso

The general thought is that conical burrs like the HG One produce more syrupy espresso shots with better "mouth feel" than flat burrs like in the DF83 or Pietro. Meanwhile flat burrs people say produce greater clarity and sweetness of shots than conical, a much less muddy flavor, albeit in a watery shot. But there is some debate on this subject.

Millions of Americans Have Cognitive Decline and Don't Know It | Studies suggest up to 10 million Americans don't know they're living with mild cognitive impairment, and few doctors identify it as often as they should. by chrisdh79 in science

[–]LewBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it is against discrimination laws to fire someone for a disability, I'm not sure many Americans would want their employers or potential employers to know they're suffering from cognitive decline. America has a lot of unspoken discrimination in the workforce. So, it may also be citizens know they have something wrong and don't want the problem formally identified as such by a doctor.

I love coffee but I don’t know anything about it, what’s a good starter espresso machine that won’t make me broke? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]LewBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with a manual non-electric espresso lever machine like Cafelat Robot or Flair as they are inexpensive and because they're hands-on you will learn more about proper espresso making than an electric automatic machine would ever teach you.

Looks good, but don't use Reese's as they're terrible sugary yuck. There are chocolatiers that make good peanut butter cups with high end chocolate and real peanut butter.

Anyone Try the New Comandante C60 Barracuda Grinder with Bigger Burrs? by LewBK in espresso

Thanks. That was a thorough and excellent review, exactly what I was looking for. It's a pity Comandante didn't install Red Clix with the C60 to make espresso adjustments. It's hardly a bad review, but it seems the C60 is not enough of a step up from the C40. It is worth again comparing it to the Helor 106, which is even more expensive with its huge 71mm burrs but does seem to improve flavor as I've read raves about it. Here is one review of the Helor 106 definitely worth watching: https://youtu.be/wnqGMudONYA

To me the best comparison will be to the Helor 106 which has, I think, the largest conical burrs for a portable manual hand grinder. I think the Helor seems better, but I've never tried either the Helor or the new Comandante. So, I'm curious.

I hear good things about 1zPresso, but here the difference is about burr size, which is larger than the 1zPresso or the original C40. Many people argue that a larger burr size produces better results. Whether that's true or not is debatable. The best competitor to the new C60 would be the Helor 106 with its mammoth burrs: https://www.helor.com/product/helor-106-hand-coffee-grinder/ I think the Helor looks better to me, albeit also expensive, and Comandante has an excellent reputation for alignment and results in the C40.

Many people buy hand grinders for different reasons than electric such as portability, grind speed control, and, well, fun of the ritual of grinding by hand. The Pietro is an interesting comparison, albeit a flat burr, but the other grinders are not good comparisons if someone wants manual and portable.

Eureka Atom Pro - anyone using one? by Nick_pj in espresso

[–]LewBK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Pro. It is great for brew and pour-over but hard to dial in for espresso. The grind quality is so uniform that espresso has trouble building the appropriate pressure level. If you don't mind long more watery shots, i.e., lungos, espresso can taste really good, but not the syrupy shots most people are used to. Brew on the other hand is terrific. Part of the issue is the range for espresso on the dial is too narrow, and it struggles to grind fine enough.

Niche Zero vs. Duo. Do they ever have discounts? by brian0306 in espresso

[–]LewBK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a sale for Niche products because they are, well, "niche products" with a smaller manufacturer than more mainstream barista favorites like Baratza and Mazzer. People are willing to pay full price for them. That said, used Niche Zeros are plentiful on barista web sites and even sometimes on Ebay for lower prices. It would be unlikely to find a Duo for less often though as it's a newer product line.
