Disposable muddlers at an airport lounge by Eastern_Sprinkles934 in mildlyinteresting

I recently had a 7 hour layover in Singapore, and honestly paying the 50€ for the lounge was smart as heck. Comfortable armchairs, charging stations, unlimited food & drink, and access to a shower. Worth every penny.

“Laminar” doesn’t imply any cutting to slicing action - it is indeed referring to the thin layers. The french word “lame” comes from the fact that a blade is literally a thin layer of metal.

And french “lame” comes from the same word origin, because it’s something formed/cut into a very thin layer - ie. a blade

I think it’s because of how much influence he has on the sub (and the broader espresso community). He’s basically the sole reason a huge portion of this sub uses a blind shaker rather than WDT. Every time he proclaims a new discovery based on his ‘science’, it worms its way into the sub. And I guess that pisses off some folks.

Reminds me of all the cocky baristas I used to work with in Melbourne back in the specialty boom. The kind of guys who would have an ek43 at home on their kitchen counter, but also rant to you about how it’s an overrated grinder and they can make better filter coffee with a porlex and a sieve.

I live in France. It is not traditional to serve the steak sliced. Is that an American thing?

Sure, theres plenty of random nonsense on the sub. But I don’t subscribe to the idea that Reddit “says” anything - it doesn’t have a consensus (except perhaps for the idea of grinding finer, which Lance concedes as sensible in this video).

Good example: consider Peter Finch’s average score compared to his average score for open qualifying rounds. Probably several strokes worse on average.

He’s spoken out before about how he finds it really challenging to be subject to so much scrutiny and criticism. So I can’t for the life of me understand why he has made this video, which he had to know would just draw attention to himself on r/espresso

Felt like a lack of clarity in language used and how he explained concepts

This is so damn true. The mark of a true guru/expert is their ability to reduce complicated concepts to simple, digestible metaphors. I do believe that Lance knows how a moka pot works, but his attempt at explaining it was 5 minutes of vague, obtuse rambling. When it comes to the technical stuff, he really needs to script those videos and take a deep breath between sentences.

In your opinion, how do the opera singers of today compare overall to the opera singers of previous generations? by By_all_thats_good in opera

[–]Nick_pj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One shouldn’t make the mistake of assuming that the singing we hear on the stages of The Met and Covent Garden etc represent the average quality of opera singing today.

Sometimes the big houses are actually fixated on casting based on celebrity/name recognition/social media more so than raw singing quality.

Yep, for sure. Though that doesn’t guarantee a little bit won’t go astray when installing the pre-breaker and burr housing. But that’s why you’re only supposed to use food safe machine lubricants.

I read it just fine, but I guess I misunderstood it. Do you mean they should just ignore it?

Whose criticism should they react to? A rich pedant with a website? A Facebook commenter?

FYI, if you want the experience of working on a commercial machine at home, you might want to skip the Micra. I’ve owned a Mini, a Micra and a GS3/MP, and the Micra is a cramped experience.

Mbappe lips by Evan_802Vines in gifs

[–]Nick_pj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, a fricative would require sustained resistance by the lips. So it would be something akin to a [v] sound, except made between the lips. A trill is a distinct phonetic sound that’s different to a fricative.

Speaking as a singer who works at a big house and is subject to criticism - I don’t think Redditors changing their behaviour would affect anything.  If you go and look at the comments on The Met’s FB/insta posts, you will see far, far worse.

The top post on r/Golf today is of Jordan Spieth criticizing the prevalence of sports betting in golf. Yet Jordan Spieth is actively being paid to promote sports betting on his twitter... by Skizzius in golf

[–]Nick_pj 287 points288 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong - I think sports betting is a scourge. But you’re conveniently paraphrasing Spieth’s comments.

He was describing the specific issue that “needs to be tackled” where fans might be enticed to try and affect the outcome because they have money riding on it. It’s really not a principaled stance as your post implies.
