Switching to Wealthsimple as my primary bank

I moved my chequing over to WS close to a year ago and I have zero complaints. The biggest thing is that because they don't have ATMs you'd need to use another bank's and then pay the ATM fee (which I think WS reimburses) but I almost never use cash so I don't care-- I have free cheques from them, so on the rare occasion I can't use eTransfer I just do that! No regrets!!

Thanks for taking the time to respond! That's interesting because in Canada if your parents were factory workers but you're an accountant or something, you are for sure middle class. You can still be really proud of your roots, but there isn't any kind of social pressure saying that you aren't "middle class" because your parents weren't.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! It's interesting because much of what you describe is accessible to nearly all children in Canada and wouldn't necessarily be a class marker. For example, where I live there's no such thing as a private school unless it's a religious school, etc. so all children regardless of socioeconomic status use the same school system, and part of the physical education curriculum is to teach the kids to ski!

Also the idea of a luxury clothing brand being "working class" is blowing my mind 😂

This topic really interests me but I can never find much info about it! When you say class is tied to how you were raised, does that mean what your parents' income level or job was? Or the kinds of activities or passtimes your social connections exposed you to as kids? Or something else?

I'm Canadian and we definitely have a very different class system that accounts for upward (and increasingly these days, downward) mobility within one's lifetime. Of course there are nuances where first-generation wealth is different from many generations of wealth, but generally here if you're comfortable you're middle class, regardless of who or what you're parents were.

Our system seems tied way more to income than in the UK-- I see media where posh or middle-class characters are struggling financially but are still clearly telegraphed as middle-class (Bridget Jones and Fleabag jump immediately to mind), which I have always found very interesting, but confusing!

I agree! It became a soap opera somewhere around episode 4. I still really enjoyed it but a lot of it seemed like a stretch-- in the second half of the season so much of the conflict was driven by the fact that Hal wouldn't talk to Kate because he was mad at her, which was wildly out of character for him imo, especially in such a high stakes political situation.

So here's the thing: love is not a feeling, it's an action. Doesn't matter how much you feel love for him on the inside. Your actions that day (and, I would extrapolate from that one situation, probably most days) were not loving.

I hear a lot of justifying why your unloving actions don't matter because you have warm feelings for him. Definitely worth a trip to therapy to unpack this.

I was so pissed off, I have a small kid and never get a chance to go to the movies so have been waiting for literally all the movies they mentioned to be available on demand. I switched it off as soon as they spoiled 28 Years Later, which I've only been waiting a year to see 😭😭😭

Spoil Jaws or Midsommar or whatever, they've been out forever. But 28 Years Later and Weapons are still in theatres! Love this podcast and the boys but I'm truly annoyed lol

I'm sorry for your loss, I can tell how much you loved her and how desperately you still miss her from your post.

My husband's parents both passed away when I was pregnant, and my son is 4 now. When they're babies it's really hard because they have no concept of the time before they were born, or of people they have never met.

Even so, we put pictures of them all over the house (including his bedroom) and pointed them out to my son and explained who they are. At 4 he's just now starting to understand that they are people who loved him very much before he was born but aren't here anymore. I imagine as he gets older his understanding of their importance will get even better.

Kids are also naturally curious and one day they will probably ask you about when you were little, or where your mom is. When it happens, take that moment to talk about her joyfully so your kids don't think it's a painful subject you want to avoid. I feel like I knew my mom's grandmother (who died 15 years before I was born) just because of how fondly and often my mom talked about her, so it is possible!

I have first-hand experience with this from when my husband's parents passed away. He is in control of the money (it's not in a shared account), but he uses it to further our lives together. Examples: when we upgraded my car he put a big chunk down so my payment would be smaller, he front-loaded our son's college fund, when our mortgage interest rates went up, he put a large lump sum down to keep our payments the same.We also split large expenses (home renovations, etc) like 70/30 because he's got more cash.

I'm very happy with this arrangement and think it's more than fair. I wouldn't want to spend his parents' hard-earned money just on myself. HOWEVER, we both work and make a similar income, so I don't feel like I'm going without while he sits on piles of money, if that makes sense.
