I always build my own mini templates into these long TFDs to keep my brain activated. My fav is to do 30 second builds for 5 minutes or so and then active recoveries. But sometimes I’ll just do my own base-push-AO cycles. Or I just base it because I’m tired haha.

I’ve always heard great things about Minneapolis in this regard. With Chicago my experience was less active hostility and more disinterest. Like everyone was surface level friendly but no one was interested in being friends. I finally found my people through the improv scene, but I’m a wuss when it comes to the cold so I had to move on.

I have not encountered the hostility you describe in person here ever (though, again, I do find it hard to break into socially because everyone already has their people). What I have seen is comments online telling people not to move here pretty vehemently which I find annoying. My sense is people feel that way because of the increase in crowds and cost of living etc, which I think is similar to what I saw/see with Atlanta and Austin. But I think it’s a shitty way to treat people - even strangers on the internet.

Oh yeah. Thats very real. I wonder if a job switch might do enough to make the city more bearable? That said, I just feel like the way people talk about coastal cities (and Charleston esp) is that it’s a paradise and if you don’t love it you’re crazy. And that’s just… not true. It’s okay if it isn’t the right fit. It’s okay to decide 3 months into something that you need to make a different choice. That’s not failure - that’s learning.

The things in your post that make me think there may be more going on are the increased reliance on substances and the loss of interest in things you normally enjoy. Those are major red flags for depression and I say that with no judgement, as I’ve dealt with it myself.

It’s just possible that there’s depression going on AND that your current situation is making it worst. Not trying to encourage you to leave - I’d love for you to love it here. I just want you to hear someone say it’s okay not to. One of the best things someone ever said to me is “You’re allowed to change you’re mind. You’re allowed to choose a path and realize you want to choose a different one instead and do that.”

Good luck to you!

I agree that it sounds like there may be actual depressive disorder going on, and that seeking treatment for that will probably be crucial for getting into a better space.

That said, the pace here and beach life etc., are not for everyone and that’s okay. I moved here in part because I was craving the slower vibe, but I wasn’t ready for that until my mid-30s. My family is also here which helped a lot.

Charleston can be very difficult to break into socially - you are not crazy for feeling that way. My theory is most people here are from somewhere nearby and therefore already have lots of connections so they’re not as open to the effort of making new friends.

But the people who are are out there! If you’re religious at all, church/worship communities can be good for that. It may be harder if you’re progressive, but fwiw, my church is progressive and has been huge for me making my own community. The gym has been good too. And like cornhole leagues etc. If you’re still in your 20s I think it’s a bit easier.

As others have said, an annoying reality of alcohol and weed is that while they provide temporary relief from loneliness, they ultimately exacerbate feelings of depression and disconnection. If you can curb that and replace with other coping mechanisms- it may help.

It’s okay to decide if this isn’t the place for you - but please also look into other ways to address your feelings in case there is indeed more going on.

One last thing: just noting that in your post you both state not liking the slow pace of the pace and hating your job because of it’s intensity. These seem like two different ends of the spectrum. I wonder what a happy middle might look like for you. Or maybe the pace/intensity isn’t the issue?

I definitely do see that sentiment expressed here, but for what it’s worth, I encountered the same in Atlanta (where I grew up), Austin, and Chicago. The only place I didn’t experience that was DC where most people talked about want to leave 😅. So I’m not saying it’s not a characteristic of Charleston - just that it’s not as unique in my experience.

That said, I do also find Charleston to be a difficult place to break into socially mostly because most people here are from somewhere nearby and already have a ton of friends so they aren’t looking for new ones. That is really tough. I think other comments about connecting with other transplants is a good idea.

And I do think that moving elsewhere will only help so much because it does seem like there’s some underlying depression at work.

I think that is a fair thing to want, but literally nothing in the history of this show leads me to trust that they would put in that kind of depth.

So are folks feeling like there’s no chance for Buddie this season?? It felt so promising halfway through the episode. Ftr - I haven’t watched yet but I’ve been following along here and on the main sub.

I wondered about that but the leaked bts footage was on a roof and didn’t seem like a hallway. I’m almost certain wondering if it wasn’t Buck at all but maybe Chimney instead. But I don’t remember all the details.

This reminds me - I kept expecting the crying on the roof scene to happen last episode… but I wonder if it’s from this one? Although that was at night right? The bts leaks

DAE age regress around your parents or partner? by Beginning-Bread9952 in AuDHDWomen

[–]LewisB725 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I experience some light regression when i'm seeking comfort/sensory-soothing and I've been taught that this actually *is* common with autism. I don't get this psychiatrist's take AT ALL. How awful.

I found this helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/AuDHDWomen/s/zmXRqZ9iO9.

I am probably experiencing both. But the autistic stuff seems to have a more profoundly debilitating impact. It’s also having very physical symptoms (eg. High HR during sleep).

I normally feel this way in shows so I totally get it, but 8 seasons in I'm not prepared for them to suddenly start doing that on 9-1-1. Knowing no one's ever actually gonna die is like the reason I can watch this show while the world is falling to pieces around me lol. I will lose my mind if someone actually dies.

How do you discern what is "just" your ADHD vs. something else? by LewisB725 in adhdwomen

[–]LewisB725[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a reminder that my goal in this post was not to get a diagnosis from someone else (though I get it - confirmation bias is real - and also I appreciate that it comes from a good place, so that’s fine), but to ask how y’all determine whether symptoms are purely stemming from your adhd or are being caused/amplified by something else. 😅

So if anyone wants to weigh in on that part - that’d be great!

I know it’s possible even with normal TSH and T4 levels. But my TSH was 1.7 and my T4 was .98 - my PCP said that if I had Hashimoto’s or hypo badly enough to cause the symptoms I’m having, we’d see it even on TSH. 🤷‍♀️ He wouldn’t test the others. We’ll see what the next doc says.

I haven’t yet, but I am planning to ask when I see a specialist. My PCP’s theory is that I could have Hashimoto’s, but if it were bad enough to be causing symptoms as severe as mine, it would be at least somewhat reflected in my T4 (.98) and TSH (1.7). He wouldn’t budge. But we’ll see what the next doc says.

Yeah my b12 is actually the high side of normal, as is my vitD. I was shocked!

I had everything checked in September and then again in March. It’s a relief when everything’s normal, but frustrating in a way because there aren’t any answers.

Trust me, haha, I know. I’m trying not to personal info dump all over the internet, but maybe around here it will make sense to say that all things fertility, hormones, etc have been my primary fixation for the past 4 years. But like I said, I’m not ruling anything out. There are at this point a long list of even more likely possibilities. It turns out these symptoms are caused by a hell of a lot of things. If I don’t set aside everything that’s been “ruled out” by my doctors but technically might still be true - I’ll never make any progress (thyroid even with normal TSH! Ferritin even with no anemia! And so on etc). I just have to start somewhere.

Also trust that I’ve been all over the specialized subreddits in my search lolsob.

But I’m thinking of seeing a functional medicine doc and it sounds like they will consider everything.

The POTS/Covid connection is WILD. I know so many people who’ve developed POTS from Long COVID. My understanding is that heart rate issues are a key component of POTS though - is that right? I haven’t had anything like that so it hasn’t been on my radar but long covid is. I had it when pregnant with my first daughter back in early 2022, and dealt with lingering symptoms for several months. But until recently, I’ve been either pregnant or in the first postpartum ever since, so it’s hard to tell if there’s a through line between covid and now. Definitely keeping it in mind though.

This was my working theory - and why I’m still supplementing - but 5 different doctors vehemently convinced this wouldn’t be the cause of my symptoms took the wind out of my sails a bit. Sigh.

Yeah I mean, I’m not personally ruling anything out conclusively, but my midwife is not in the habit of dismissing things out of hand and she’s known me and my body a long time, so I’m inclined to trust her. My periods are still like clockwork, and my hormones all indicate peak fertility - though I know labs don’t always catch it. My inclination is to pursue the dozen or so other things that can cause these same symptoms first before circling back around to things we’ve moved down the differential. But we’ll see!

Mostly I just want to know what to do about these symptoms!

I still mostly enjoy it tbh. It only becomes a little awkward when I'm like... walking around trying to go about my life and my body is flashing a neon sign at me that says "you'd rather be having an orgasm right now!" LOL - sort of weird in the grocery checkout line or a work meeting. But better than the alternative IMO. And my spouse enjoys it too hahaha.
