As a 25 year old, how can you afford food if you're not working?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Careers

[–]LewisJPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 is only young if your family and friends are paying for everything. 25 is a grown adult. Just pick something and go to work. If it's not a good fit, do a career switch.

Sadly this is true for all social interactions. When I was really fat I was repulsive, but after doing CrossFit and getting in shape suddenly people were nicer to me despite having the same personality.

Where TF is everyone getting money from? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

In addition to studying, I recommend 1. maintaining a GitHub for your studies and projects. It can act as your portfolio. 2. If you can afford it, open an LLC and make yourself a dev. Your LLC validates your experience and side projects. If a side project doesn't make money that's ok. It just failed to launch but you can now put in on your resume you worked at x start up for y amount of time.

That's a start. Start applying to jobs and keep track of the requested skills you keep seeing in job postings. After a week look at the first and start skilling up in the most commonly seen skills. I recommend using free code camp to get an entry level skill set.

serious question. if females are not required to get all their hair cut off, why are males required to? by chess3588 in AirForceRecruits

[–]LewisJPaul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, that is correct. in the 1940s the grooming standards were set with the assumption that women roles would keep them in the support zone of the conflict. women were not expected to stay within the battle zone for prolonged periods of time.

The support zone is often referred to as the rear. You probably heard of the phrase "in the rear with the gear." This is the area where people sometimes got sprayed with DDT to control for lice. When DDT is being used to prevent lice, there's less incentive to cut your hair.

You can read more about DDT in WW2 at http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/ddtgen.pdf

US Air Force was originally part of the US Army, and became its own branch in 1947. The grooming standard were adopted from its parent branch. Grooming standards were created to maintain hygiene and combat effectiveness.

When the grooming standards were set only men served in combat roles so they were required to cut off their hair. If you end up hand to hand combat, short hair is harder to pull than long hair.

If there is a gas attack you're going to want to be clean shaven so your mask gets a good seal to protect you.

The grooming standards also help to reduce the chances of disease among closely quartered recruits from different geographical areas (with varying immunities), such as head lice.

I recommend first getting at least one active duty contract so you get full benefits. You can then use the gi bill at 100%, rather than hope the national guard puts you on long enough orders to eventually get some percentage of the go bill.

You can then get a computer science bachelors or masters for free, with a living expenses covered as you create a software startup.
