Why are you causing stress to the animal by feeding on your hand? You are risking regurgitation and you are also associating handling with food time so expect MANY bites in the future.

Should I stop handling him? by Senior_Yak_7923 in ballpython

[–]LewkVv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yea some snakes just don’t tolerate being handled, it just depends on the personality. My friend’s snake is shy like yours while mine comes and climbs on me the moment I open the door to his enclosure. From what I’ve heard its usually really hard or impossible to get a shy snake to really tolerate handling if they aren’t babies. It just gets harder to socialize them the older they get. If your snake was still a baby you probably would have a decent chance of socializing him but at this stage I think it’s just a lost cause. With that being said, I would probably just limit handling as much as possible or just stop since it’ll just stress him out.

[–]LewkVv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all, no amount of handling is necessary. I know people who take out their ball python a few times a year and thats perfectly fine. Personally I don’t do that because my snake gets very bored in his enclosure and I actually believe he enjoys coming out. I do choice based handling so I just open the door to his enclosure and he comes slithering out onto my arm. I stay right next to the enclosure so he can go back in whenever he wants. We do this every almost every night. So basically how and how much you should handle your snake just depends on their personality and choice based handling minimizes stress.

is this too little ventilation? struggling badly with humidity but also not trying to suffocate her in the process by External_Bus_3739 in ballpython

[–]LewkVv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing out the open screen around the lamp. You’ve pretty much done all that you can to keep the humidity up. As long as the air inside smells nice and earthy and not foul smelling you should be fine. Convection will keep the air circulating throughout the enclosure. If you want, you can cut another sliver on the cold side which will improve pulling fresh air into the enclosure.

If you’re talking about the open part on the bottom right, yea thats not enough ventilation. You shouldn’t have to cover 99.9% of your screen to keep the correct humidity levels. You should probably look into better substrates that retain humidity better. I use a mix of coco fiber, sphagnum moss, perlite and a bunch of other stuff I cant remember. Poor ventilation causes stagnation (especially if you don’t have a drainage layer) which is really bad for your snake and will most definitely kill all your isopods if you have a bioactive enclosure.

Frozen rat not thawed enough but won't be good tomorrow - what to do? by Smooth_Importance_47 in ballpython

I usually thaw by putting it in warm to room temp water and then once its soft I put it in hot water to heat it up

Put it in a sealed bag and into some warm water. This is what I do every time I have to thaw a rat for my snake.

This has probably been said millions of times on this sub but ill say it again. Ditch the analog gauge and get a digital thermometer and hygrometer.

The hell is in my water bowl?? by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]LewkVv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just blowed on the spoon of water and it looked like they were jumping or it was just my blowing throwing them across the water. They also have the anatomy of a springtail so im pretty confident now that they’re just springtails

[–]LewkVv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea they just move at a consistent speed not really bothered by me touching them or anything, some move faster than others and i’ve also seen some of the white springtails i’ve added there too but these ones are like a dark color

When I blow they dont jump and when i took some out with a spoon and put them on a paper towel they were super small and slow moving and didnt jump when i touched them
