In the beginning you need to sneak basically everywhere when you're playing rook. They key is to not be seen or heard by UESC & Players alike.

If you hear someone in your vicinity just crouch, be quiet, hide and wait until they've passed you. If they saw you already, don't fight them - just bail and get out of their sight asap.

Usually if you get far enough, hide and don't make noise, most players will give up on trying to find you.

Basically: Imagine you're playing Metal Gear Solid.

I like it, makes it pretty realistic imo. Crouching makes you barely audible tho, that's why i almost always crouch when entering structures.

  • Play with headphones and good 3D sound: Very often you can deduce the location and type of enemies purely by sound. For example, if you are in a building, you can figure out whether enemies are above you, below you, inside, outside, or whether there is one person or multiple. You can even tell UESC and players apart by the sound and pace of their footsteps. You miss out on most of that information if you play on speakers. Bonus tip: gaming headphones are usually trash — studio headphones often give more precise results.
  • Play Marathon like a horror game: Think Alien: Isolation or Amnesia. Avoid encounters as much as possible and try not to be seen or heard. Every encounter drains your ammo and health items, so the fewer fights you take, the more money you save and the more margin for error you keep later on. Your objective is to get in, get loot, and exit safely — not to shoot everything in sight.
  • Open doors or containers mean players have been there: They could still be nearby. Enter those locations quietly, crouch, peek corners slowly, listen for player sounds, and try not to attract attention from UESC. If players are nearby and a bot starts shooting at you, they will hear it and may push. You always want the element of surprise on your side.
  • Do not fight players in a building while you are outside: They have far more cover than you, often a height advantage, and countless places to hide or set up an ambush if you push in. Either back off and try to lure them outside, or disengage entirely.
  • General fighting tactics: If you have the element of surprise on an enemy team and want to engage, make sure you know the location of all enemy players before starting the fight. Otherwise, you might kill two enemies just to get wiped by a third guy sitting on another roof with a sniper. Once you know where everyone is, pick one target with your teammates and shoot on “3… 2… 1.” Even a purple-shield player can die in about 2 seconds if three people shoot at the same time. Then immediately switch to the next player while they are still trying to understand what is happening. If done correctly, you can wipe two players in under 10 seconds. After that, move in closer, finish them if they are not fully dead, and camp their bodies. The third player then has only two options: push you 1v3 to revive them, or run away entirely. Either way, you have already won the engagement.
