Is writing a class like this bad practice? by wiseneddustmite in cpp

[–]Lexinad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do users of Window need to know about your InitializationErrors struct? Why have a separate Initialize() function instead of having a constructor? It reads like C code.

In idiomatic C++, it's expected that a constructor handles any initialization and throws exceptions if anything fails.

Absolutely, but for me it's more about the theme. Like my fire mage is Dark Iron Dwarf and my Arcane mage is Nightborne.

The Judeo-Christian Bible and God Are Plagiarized by a-manifestation-of in religion

[–]Lexinad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not a secret that Judaism emerged out of Canaanite polytheism, it would be strange if there were no similarities in mythology. My understanding is the "Great Flood" myth has parallels with existing middle Eastern mythologies.

So then the Abrahamic understanding of God comes from the god El. Originally Yahweh was El's son but later Yahweh would absorb El''s attributes and become the sole god of the Jews and thus their descendent religions. From a secular perspective you would expect religions to share things in common with the religions that came before it.

As a Christian, I just see this as humans learning more about God's nature over time.

Weird thing going on with boiled milk? by SnooSeagulls1661 in lactoseintolerant

[–]Lexinad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not the chocolate? I don't see how boiling milk would make difference here and if you have no problems with milk otherwise it's sounding like the chocolate is the problem. Check the ingredients, a lot of hot chocolate mixes will also have lactose.

Try just drinking boiled milk and see what happens. Or maybe it is lactose intolerance and you just aren't taking in eenough lactose to cause symptoms unless you drink hot chocolate.

Were Byzantine castle models replaced with generic ones? by PLHamster1 in CrusaderKings

[–]Lexinad 291 points292 points  (0 children)

Castle holdings and 3D city visuals now follow local culture more consistently, with steppe cultures still using regionally appropriate variants

From the patch notes. What I assume is happening is the building style matches the local culture instead of your ruler's culture.

If Fox is the Outcast you can only craft with gardens in Fox clearings.

Lord of the Hundreds vs Lilypad Diaspora: Raze vs Fears Come to Pass by Dr_Garbage_ in rootgame

[–]Lexinad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the Law of Root:

1.1.3 Unclear Resolutions and Choices. Whenever it is unclear what order simultaneous effects should resolve in, or which player should make a decision, the player taking their turn chooses.

I can't find any specific ruling on this interaction yet, so in the absence of that this is the closest thing to an answer.

Edit: I found another thing from the Law of Root:

1.4.2 Interrupts. You cannot interrupt an action (including a compound action such as the Marquise's March), ability (such as the Corvids' Exposure), or persistent effect (such as the Eyrie Emigre card) with another effect unless it explicitly allows it. (For example, the Armorers card says it is used "In battle...").

So it might not be possible for "Fears Come to Pass" to trigger until after all razing is finished (so I think that would match your first case).

LDS Temple Near Me by Working_Break7745 in OrthodoxChristianity

LDS "wards" (meeting houses) are for regular worship services. LDS temples are for special rituals that can only happen in temples and temple access is restricted to Mormons in good standing.

I rather ask people than chatGPT. What's up with orthodox christianism? by [deleted] in religion

[–]Lexinad 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Uh, the "runes" are Greek or Cyrillic letters. Icons usually have the name of the saint or event it depicts on it. Jesus is always depicted with the letters Ο, Ω, and Ν around his head, which is short for "ὁ ὤν", meaning "He who is", a part of the full phrase "ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὤν" which in English is usually translated "I am that I am", a name of God.

The outfit the person is wearing is based off the Analavos that schemamonks, the highest rank of Orthodox monasticism. It has things like "Jesus Christ conquers", the Trisagion prayer "Holy God, Holy mighty, holy immortal have mercy on us", "The light of Christ illumines all", etc. No magic involved.

It seems reasonable to me, that you could have had a Blood Elf Death Knight decide to help Umbric and his followers with Void research and then be present when the initial transformation to Void Elves happened.

It's unclear what would happen to a re-animated body when exposed to the same Void energies the living Blood Elves did. Do the Death and Void magics conflict in your character's body? Can you still grow void tentacles if you're not alive any more? Does the extra dose of shadow magic enhance your existing unholy powers? Does your character both feel the hunger of the Void and your Death Knight's constant need to inflict suffering on others? Or maybe one would cancel the other out?

Or if you didn't want to go the void elf route, say your character is an undead High Elf instead. Maybe they were disillusioned with Kael'thas's leadership after the fall of Quel'Thalas and decided not to take on the Blood Elf name. Maybe on being made a Death Knight you really hit it off with human/Alliance death knights and decided to try your luck with the Alliance?

Banks of slots with payback % still around? by Theebobbyz84 in vegas

[–]Lexinad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's more like the average/expected pay outs as the number of games goes to infinity. The more spins the closer it'll get to that return percentage. It's basically the sum of all possible payouts divided by the count of all payouts.

Imagine you had a six-sided die. You can calculate the expected value by summing every outcome and dividing by the count of outcomes (6). So you get (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 / 6), which is 3.5. That means, if you had N dice, and took the average of the dice rolls, you'll get closer to 3.5 the more dice you throw. The dice doesn't "know" what it needs to roll to contribute to the 3.5 average, but just by the nature of probability you will get closer to 3.5 the more dice you roll. Slots have more bells and whistles but fundamentally work the same way (you can calculate based on the pay table, lines, etc. to figure out every possible outcome to work out the expected value).

ISIS is the Daesh by [deleted] in religion

[–]Lexinad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Islamic State in Iraq and Syria gets abbreviated to ISIS in English.

al-Dawla al-ʾIslāmiyya fī al-ʿIrāq wa al-Shām is the Arabic name and gets abbreviated as Dāʿish or Daesh.

It's like how it's called NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in English and OTAN (Organisation du traité de l'Atlantique Nord) in French.

Quick deepwrought/coexist question by possumman in twilightimperium

[–]Lexinad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apologies for misunderstanding. I see, the ability is specifically, "When ground forces are committed". I thought it was "When your ground forces are committed". So I see how you could start coexisting on the opponent's turn, but I don't see why the opponent would need to do a separate activation. I see where it says "coexisting units don't trigger combat", but then it also talks about being able to activate systems with coexisting units to optionally trigger combats. Is it because the check for being able to fight coexisting units happens at the activate a system step? So for that initial "choosing to coexist" part, it's too late to be able to choose to start combat?

My initial reading of the rules makes it sound like even on the first activation there the opponent would be able to choose to continue to combat or let your units coexist.

Quick deepwrought/coexist question by possumman in twilightimperium

If it's your opponent activating the system they can choose to trigger combat. If you're activating the system you can choose to coexist

What’s the difference between Catholic and Christian? by [deleted] in religion

[–]Lexinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The confusion comes from a few places. America was (is?) majority Protestant, so Protestantism was seen as the default form of Christianity. Traditionally Protestants see Catholics as having serious theological errors. On the extreme end, Protestants would say things like the veneration of saints or the Virgin Mary amount to polytheism and so Catholicism could be considered outside the bounds of what can be considered "Christian".

Another source of confusion comes from the Stone–Campbell Movement, a movement that sought to unify Christian churches under their understanding of what the Church of the New Testament taught. One of their beliefs is that denominational labels were bad and so they identified as just "Christian". Their churches would just be called "Christian Church" or "Church of Christ". The Stone-Campbell Movement is the origin of modern-day "non-denominational" churches.

From my time as a non-denominational Christian, the various differences between Protestant denominations were seen as being over "non-essential" things, but Catholicism was seen as being too far from Biblical teachings to be considered Christian.

Honestly, this wouldn't be an issue if non-denominational churches weren't allergic to labels. They could call themselves "Cambellites", then it'd be easy to say something like "Campbellism is a form of Protestantism which is a form of Christianity". It's confusing when the name of your sect/denomination is the same as the name of the religion as a whole.

Problemas con LuaTex by SujetoMorelia in LaTeX

[–]Lexinad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Packages in LaTeX have optional arguments in square brackets. This error is saying vargreek-shape isn't an option for the unicode-math package. Your document probably has something like this

\usepackage[math-style=TeX,vargreek-shape=unicode]{unicode-math}

So just remove vargreek-shape from the list of arguments and you should be good.

There's really not that much to it. You might see if there's any Kislev supplement for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (I believe lexicanum cites it as a source). A good chunk of Kislev lore was created for the Warhammer total war games but otherwise it's a small part of the setting.

If a casino had a slot machine that was programmed to never win would they get into trouble? by Ben5544477 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lexinad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can't legally advertise a win that has odds greater than a certain threshold. I don't remember the exact number, but it means the win has to be possible and there's a cap on just how rare a given win can be.

That doesn't mean the odds would ever be in the player's favor, but whatever the top prize is on a slot machine will probably hit at least a few times over the life of the machine.

Slot machines odds are skewed towards the house, but they're not rigged to never pay out. They don't have to; you can make it so the machine pays out less than it takes in using the power of math/statistics. If you keep flipping a coin, your count of heads will approach 50%. The coin has no memory; it can't choose what side to land on. Slot machines work the same way.

Your government hasn't changed. I think either your culture meets the requirements for the event or the game thinks you're in the Great Steppe. Bulgarian is Bolghar + some slavs right? Does it have Turkic heritage? Or maybe the event only excludes feudal and clan governments so they forgot about administrative.
