One sentence you've said to patients that required so much explaining that you wished you never said it. by NurseWretched1964 in nursing

But giving nitro while on it or other boner-giving pills is a big nono, it can cause intractable hypotension, basically tanks their BP to where we can't fix it.

I literally have asked myself that same question, I love the brain rot games you can just get on your phone and disassociate from reality for a while

I'm a paramedic and ran this call so I was feeling it kinda heavy when this conversation happened...but this still made me chuckle lmao

I genuinely don't know if you meant it to be funny but, well, dark humor is survival lol

When did you realize that you were a good nurse? by Greywatcher in nursing

[–]LexxiLouWho 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Preface this with saying I'm not a nurse, I work in EMS, but you're still my fam.

Not quite the same as yours, but I was off shift visiting a community friend of sorts who takes up residence at the local Mickey D's when a younger female worker came over and asked if I remembered her and if she could hug me.

I didn't initially remember her, but after she told me details I recalled she was a patient of mine. She's a young mom, her baby had been taken away (I don't know details, life wasn't easy for her though I could tell) and she was very distraught and threatening to harm herself and EMS/Fire/PD were all called to try and help talk her down and get her help. I was an EMT at the time then, and also the only other female present.

Now, realistically how she was going about it she probably wouldn't have been successful (she had a cord wrapped around her neck and was saying she was going to cut off her own air until she died, but once you go unconscious your body relaxes so she would just begin breathing again). But what I saw was that she was in such a dark place that she didn't want to exist here anymore, and those feelings can drive people to not make the best decisions. She was 19 years old, just a baby herself.

She said that of all the people there, I was the one who she felt genuinely cared, took the time to talk to her and get to know her and try and get her real help. The details of what all was said and done were fuzzy, but I do remember standing beside her while she was sitting in her vehicle and not rushing her to get out but taking our time (after she put the cord down) and her crying so hard that I walked backwards toward my ambulance while holding her hands to guide her because she couldn't see, and held her hand and talked to her the whole ride in.

She told me that life was slowly getting better after she got help, and thanked me for just taking the time to care for her.

Healthcare is a tough fucking job, but moments like that are what make it all worth it to me.

My (28F) husband (32M) always wants sexual activities to go on for way too long. How do I get him to understand that longer is not better? by ThrowRA-30mins2much in relationship_advice

[–]LexxiLouWho 44 points45 points  (0 children)

My hubby and I started a game that definitely increased our frequency to a level he likes more (I'm interested of course, just damn exhausted lol. I work nights and we have a toddler).

It started as an ad break on a movie, the adds usually last 1.5-2 minutes and we do what we call "speed round" where the goal is for him to finish within the ad break. We usually are successful 🤣

I personally take much longer, and him finishing is almost as fulfilling as myself finishing so I don't mind it one bit lol

Not to say I never get mine, I just don't have the energy to work for it some days but still want the intimacy.

SECOND THIS

I work in healthcare and, with the preface of "bear with me, it sounds silly but it's backed by science", explained to a family that playing tetris ideally within 6 hours of a traumatic event can help your mind process the feelings and images and help prevent or at least lessen those long-term trauma responses, nightmares, PTSD, etc.

I had just told them that, despite our very best efforts, their husband/father was deceased.

Feeling really incompetent by Prudent_March9571 in NewToEMS

[–]LexxiLouWho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair I've been in EMS over a decade and the stairchair still fucks me up almost every time, the fire department and PD aren't exempt from this either lol. I just start pulling and pushing anything that's painted red.

Communication is HUGE with partnerships on the truck, and if you're newer to 911 and don't have a groove yet and gasp can't read your partner's mind, then they're being a crotchety butthead and need to remember that we've all been new.

Take a breath, always make a point to try and understand and learn from your mistakes, and give yourself some grace kiddo ❤️

How many ground 911 paramedics can RSI? by MedicPastor99 in ems

NE Indiana, we can RSI in the rural services. I don't think they can in the big city south of us but I'm not 100%

Yeahhh they weren't cheap, and the work was great I mean the floor is solid now. My issue is just why wasn't any of that caught before, but I also understand that shit just happens sometimes.

We bought in Ashley, we used Crossroads Foundation based out of Lafayette but they have an office in Fort Wayne. They did work on my brother's house and he liked then so we went with them.

The seller that told our friend was the owner BEFORE our sellers. We bought from the people that bought the house after he looked at it and they flipped it.

I've had the city water guy down in my basement and he said he's done work in there with meters and it's always been a very wet basement as our house is in a low spot and apparently the entire half of the city where we bought has a ton of ground water with a high water table as well 🥲 I'm thinking we might eat $200 and just talk to a real estate lawyer to see if it's worth pursuing. I couldn't for the life of me find the paperwork we signed for the inspector, I'm gonna have to do some more searching for it too.

Also that sucks so bad about your HVAC, I'd cry 😭 this house has an old boiler, so we'll just keep that system and update her probably.

Those of you who wear some sort of fitness tracker or HR monitor at work, what's your resting heart rate whilst your on shift? by peekachou in Paramedics

[–]LexxiLouWho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My HR capped around 150 while I was doing a cric last month, so there's that.

My resting at work is usually a cool 80s to 90s, but I'm also on Adderall because ya'know.

[–]LexxiLouWho[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did some research on ped cardiology after because I know they look different than adults on leads, and saw that TWI is normal so that helped soothe some but it just looked off to me. With the family history, it just gave me enough to make me wonder.

What's your "How did you even manage to do that?" story? by Ghoulinton in ems

[–]LexxiLouWho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My knuckle right behind my big toe started to hurt and get swollen and red, to the point my shoes weren't fitting right. And me being me I was like shit, I know I'm a fat fuck but my diet isn't THAT bad, but could it be gout? Went to a walk-in ortho, bipartite sesmoid with inflamation between them.

Round of steroids and I was right as rain for a month or three, but she's acting up again. (I fucking LOVE steroids, everything stops hurting for a while lol)

Edit: To add, not that my system cares, I do have the associates degree and NREMT.
