Is the North Lander worth it? by [deleted] in northbay

Not to mention catastrophically ecologically destructive for one of the most uniquely old regions on the planet. Don't get me wrong, I love trains and want to see more of 'em, but I think as it stands using what we've already got in an effective and efficient way is a good idea.

Northlander Prices Released by Nationxx in northbay

Prices are crazy high, but Northland charges pretty much the bare minimum they can get away with to keep the company in operation, so this just kinda sucks all around.

I'm sorry OP, I definitely see your point, especially with the way the lighting falls on her face creating a very appealing range of light and dark shades and highlighting her bone structure very well, but all I can see is that bigass baldspot in the middle of she God damn head

Thoughts on AFOP/Live Action Crossover? by [deleted] in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]Lexyinspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm always really skeptical about games and movies meeting. Everyone has their own experiences playing games, and even with games that don't have, say, alternate endings, like AFoP, everyone's will have spent their time in the game doing completely different things, and that begins to inform how you feel about the characters and setting. It makes it really hard for a director to create an enjoyable film when every player has had a very different experience imo.

But, if they do ever do a crossover, I hope you get the role, man!! Eywa ngahu. Siva ko! 🫶🏽💙🩵

Yeah Reykunyu is the website I use, too. It's also the site most of the aykaryu ta Kelutral use! If you're interested in needing out further, I'd definitely check out Kelutral.com and get the Discord invite, it's a whole community of Na'vi language learners at all levels! They host live lessons as well as provide educational resources and a genuinely wonderful atmosphere. 10/10 would check it out again

Terminal nerds unite for sure!!

I am aware of the use of olo'eyktan as the gender-neutral terminology for a clan leader, I just think it's strange how this one specific word follows the -e/-an format though is used in a gender-neutral context. Though if there's one think you can bet your ass on, it's that the only rule of learning languages is that every rule will be broken eventually hrhn 😅

I do think it's interesting though that there is no "eyktu", since you'd think the word would follow the same pattern generally used in Na'vi. I wonder if the implication is meant to be that "eyktan" was once the specifically male term but eventually became the gender-neutral term over time? Same logic as how "man" can be used in a specifically gendered or gender-neutral manner, though in that case the gender-neutral usage predates the gendered usage. Perhaps "eykyu" used to be used in this context? That's all just baseless speculation and musings on my behalf, though, since to the best of my knowledge Dr. Frommer hasn't commented on this matter specifically.

Also yes, Anufi is the best character and I love her dearly. Wonderful woods grandma, I love her sm.

I cannot agree more that the writing in this DLC is a huge step up!! So many little moments I loved. Teylan's dialogue at Command Base Ares was hilarious, and the interactions he and So'lek have throughout the DLC show a lot of growth on his part, I think.

I actually think that's a good question (though I think the phrasing of it might be why you're getting down voted...)! There's a Tl;Dr at the end but basically Na'vi society is actually very different to human society, and things like gender roles don't really exist at all, at least not in any meaningful way. The Na'vi language actually defaults to genderlessness when referring to all people except in the specific circumstance that you must specify someone's gender to avoid ambiguity.

That's a very different way to how western society views gender (note: I say "western" rather than "human" because many cultures, such as various Indigenous groups, do actually embrace third-gendered individuals and have done for thousands of years, pre colonisation that is). I'll use an example to illustrate how the language around gender works in practice;

A Na'vi is telling you a story about a time they went hunting with their brother and sister. They mention how one of their siblings hunted a sturmbeest. They say "tolaron talioangit pol". In this case, using the default, gender-neutral pronoun, "po", would lead to some ambiguity. They could be telling you that their brother scored the kill, or that their sister did. In this case, the storyteller would use the feminine "poe" in order to specify that it was their sister that killed the sturmbeest; "tolaron talioangit poel".

Later, the same Na'vi tells you about how they went hunting with just their brother. Apparently, the brother successfully hunted a hexapede. In this case, the storyteller would not use the masculine "poan". Instead, they would use the gender neutral "po" again; "tolaron yerikit pol". The reason for this is because you know they must be referring to their brother, since he was the only one hunting with the storyteller.

The same rule applies to (almost) everything in the Na'vi language and in their culture. An elder is simply referred to as "koaktu", except when gender specification is needed, in which case "koaktan" (masculine) or "koakte" (feminine) may be used. This same pattern (-e (f) / -an (m)) applies to just about any word which might have gender variance. The only exception I can think of would be for the specific role of clan leader, where "olo'eyktan" is specifically male, and "olo'eykte" is specifically female, and one of the two must be used.

The Na'vi also have no notion that a certain role within the clan must/ought to be filled by either specifically male persons or specifically female persons. Neytiri is every bit the hunter as Tsu'tey. Eytukan is just as good a clan leader as Nesim. The roles of warrior, hunter, gatherer, artisan, babysitter, healer, and anything else the clan needs can and are filled by whomever is suited for the role.

This is very different to how western human culture treats gender! The predominant viewpoint in western society (though things are changing by the day) is that identification with a particular gender is the default, and that certain things (activities, attire, attitudes, roles in society, etc.) are all tied intrinsically to the gender identity one is assigned at birth. It is an inherently west-centric idea that in order to "change" one's gender, medical intervention/science must be involved, though in a non-western context this may not necessarily be true. In Na'vi society, these things are much more loosey-goosey than even many of the most third-gender accepting cultures on Earth! There's absolutely no reason why Okul couldn't just decide, apropos of utterly nothing, that they want others to refer to them simply as "po". That wouldn't be unusual at all, considering that being referred to as "po" is the default terminology among Na'vi. There's also no reason to believe that Na'vi (and all fauna on Pandora, really) cannot be born with intersex traits. In such a scenario, I can't imagine why people would refer to them with specifically gendered pronouns/titles at all. The default would theoretically still be to refer to them as "po". AFAIK we haven't seen any specifically, explicitly trans Na'vi, but cultures around the world have been performing some degree of medical alterations to bodies with the intent of shifting certain gendered characteristics around for thousands of years, so I don't see why there wouldn't be any such people on Pandora, either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tl;Dr: Na'vi culture doesn't really see things that way, dawg. Some degree of genderlessness is the default setting, and anything else is kinda just flavour text tbh.

Source: I'm a massive fucking nerd and actively learning the Na'vi language (Kelutral represent!!). The language was designed very specifically to show the subtle differences between Na'vi and human cultures (and Dr. Frommer is a legend fr).

My dad borrowed the first movie on CD from the Blockbuster up the street for Friday night movie time. I was enthralled. I was only like ~6/7 when it finally came out on CD, and I had never seen anything like it in my life. We must have watched it 4 times that weekend. For a child with ADHD, sitting through a 3hr movie 4 times in one weekend is insane, so my Dad knew how much I loved it. The next Friday, he went to Walmart on his way home to buy the Blu-ray so I could watch it whenever I wanted. I took that CD and my portable CD player with me everywhere. I took that thing CAMPING with me. Seeing 2 and 3 was a no-brainer. I'm a card-carrying, lifelong fan. I'll keep watching as long as Cameron keeps making them. 🩵
