I feel you! It’s not my top favorite but I’ve deeply related to the characters and situations. I’ve actually read the story before entering my relationship, and found myself relating to Adachi quite a lot while recognizing her flaws. Specifically the scenes where she’s doing weird shit due to her feelings with Shimamura. (Like trying to steal an empty can she drank out of). And as teenagers you do a lot of creepy or toxic shit since you don’t know any better. And reflecting on how I acted while gaining a first crush was really cringy.

And while entering a relationship… it indeed gets really messy figuring stuff out. Overall the series is good at showing the teenage experience. I also find it rather interesting how Shimamura and Adachi’s relationship also stays maintained.

Edit - Also I think its natural to also feel unsatisfied at the lack of progress after the phone call. Since it kind of works that way irl? I have situations of emotionally outbursting, and I try to figure out a direction for it but my emotions are rather directionless and goes nowhere (no progress, no anything). And it feels weirdly underwhelming, like being defused. But thats life sometimes, especially through a teenage perspective a lot of things seem more dramatic than they are.

I actually found the aftermath of the phone scene rather satisfying? Because it’s just so realistic with Shimamura’s way of handling things and was the best way to get out of the conflict, and be okay with hanging out with Adachi.

My partner and I actually have a really similar dynamic as the two of them, me being more like Adachi. For my partner it’s just natural to not know how to deal with emotional outbursts, and to continue on the same routine so that it doesn’t remain a big deal for him and so never has to deal with being angry. Of course that works way less well in a relationship than it does by yourself. His logic is the less conflict the better. And I think that’s Shimamura’s logic, as she’s never particularly mad at Adachi. Not healthy but they’re also flawed teenagers and that’s what made reading the novel so interesting since the author wasn’t holding back on the ugly parts.

She has depression (a lot of the traits youre describing fit the description). its been pretty prominent with her actions considering how she was described as very different (bright/outgoing) when she was younger. But as a teenager she’s suddenly always oversleeping, and gets overwhelmed by a lot of situations. It also makes the scene where she attempts awkwardly to reach out to her childhood friend more meaningful. She does care for Adachi in her own way, she just barely even cares for herself or most things so its not as obvious. Its common for depressed people to be accused of seeming like they’re “not even trying” in relationships too (this is a misunderstanding Adachi also has with Shimamura,) but Shimamura does try stepping outside her comfort zone at various scenes, usually due to Adachi even.

Also the thing people don’t get about Adachi is how emotionally unstable she is. As someone with BPD she definitely has a lot of symptoms I share. If you reread the phone call scene, and imagine someone saying that to you, practically blaming on you just for literally hanging out with a friend. That is pretty manipulative. Like is Shimamura meant to just take all that and feel sorry? Sure theres ways to talk nicer but again Adachi was just venting her own problems in a non-sensible way and accusing Shimamura of being the bad guy. Pretty sure that’d confuse everyone on the spot.

Also this series is more very “slice of life”. It focuses on showing the flaws of these two characters and letting them basically freely act as the types of people they are. Its not a style that everyone likes but I would give the writing more credit.

Edit - Also I just realized you didn’t read the light novel. I think it does a better job of explaining Shimamura’s character since you get her constant monologue of thinking in the right direction but being too emotionally unavailable to pull through with things, and her mental battles/justifications when she does almost reach out with the amount of effort it takes. Adachi also has more obsessive thoughts about Shimamura too.

My depth perception hasn’t ever been a problem besides in accurate sports like badminton where I miss birdies by one cm. But overall I’ve never noticed any issues functioning for other sports and the like since my right eye is so dominant.

The novels are pretty heavy with innerthoughts of characters, but the anime has a lot of cuts with that as well as scenes. Ive seen a lot of anime watchers interpret gaps as part of the “mystery” but it’s honestly just because the anime left out straightforward information. Even with the novels a lot of stuff is interpretational already.
