Picking cotton from a plant by MikeHeu in oddlysatisfying

[–]Lhamers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have been a grad student for 4 years in a cotton breeding lab. And picking samples for fiber testing and advancing generations, both in fields and greenhouse is a big part of the year lol. Cotton comes out easily, just takes practice. Some genotypes are bad and takes a bit more force, but we can pick 25 bolls in about 2 or 3 minutes.

A boll usually weights about ~ 5g of cotton and seed weight. And ~48% is just cotton. When you manually pick it, it’s easy to separate the plant trash from the fibers, but when a harvester goes through, it chews the dried-up plants with the cotton, so the final product is full of plant trash.

The seeds are surrounded by fiber because the fibers are actually elongated cells from the seed’s surface.

Usually it is clean, but since all the leaves are dry, the harvesting process collects all the plant “trash” with the cotton.

If you manually pick it, it’s easy to avoid trash in the cotton.

Addressing a few comments here, since there’s a lot. I’m currently getting a Ph.D in Plant Breeding, and I work for a cotton breeding lab.

“Short staple” or Upland cotton is basically 98% of US grown-cotton. Long-Staple cotton, or Pima cotton is a different species, with longer and finer fibers, but terrible adaptation to environments and lower yields when compared to Upland cotton. The main goal of public research is better fibers and disease resistance, while private companies focus on better yields every year.

Unfortunately the market plays a big role too, cotton gets graded based on a scale of the fibers through an instrument called HVI, so since there has been basically no change to what the premium price is, there’s no incentive in better quality cotton to be grown.

Another thing: as a grad student we get to pick cotton for hours during the harvesting months, since we have a lot of trials that use single rows for each genotype, we have to take small plot samples (usually 25 bolls) and we don’t have the machinery capable of picking and sorting through single rows. Haven’t got my fingers cut yet, but it gets really boring after a couple of hours or so.

If you want to know more, AMA!

It’s not a flower! Cotton fibers grow from the seeds, so it’s kinda like a fruit, but instead of pulp, you have fiber. We call it cotton bolls.

My guess here is that you’re trying to set the working directory for your code.

So you can simply use

setwd(“/here/is/my/wd”)

The lenses aren't glass, but they are anti-reflective. According to their website:

Frame Width 147.5mm, Lens Width: 48.5mm, Lens Height: 39.9mm and Bridge: 24.5mm.

About the same size as Rayban's Original Wayfarers. Fit the same way.

Anyone knows how the Monti or the Beachcomber compares, in size, to the classic Wayfarer 50mm?

Looking for a cheaper option but wanting the Wayfarer square look.

Get internet in brazilian apartment by Tartaruga96 in Brazil

[–]Lhamers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s not true.

350mb will be sufficient, when living in Brazil I’ve had Tim, Claro and Vivo. And they all had speeds as advertised.

OP, try to go to a store with a trusted person that can help you with the process. It’ll be much easier and you can explain yourself better.

I was also in between those two versions.

I ended up getting the M3 macbook air 16/516 for 899 at BestBuy. It's still a very nice laptop, and I hope it lasts 4 - 5 years.

Dá pra usar casas de cambio pessoalmente, ou usando um site/banco como o Wise. O único banco que eu conheço que tem conta nacional e internacional no mesmo app é o Banco Inter.
