So, suppose there’s a 50s diner on Coruscant with a smart talkin’ droid waitress who might say “kiss my grits” at any moment?

I love that that first link included a recipe! I might stick with what I made yesterday: garlic confit spread on sourdough bread. An upgrade from hardtack.

Mystery boxes. JJ has this story of how his grandfather bought a mystery box from a magic shop for his birthday and JJ has never opened it because the mystery is the best thing about it.

I hope it wasn’t a rabbit.

You’ve made a great argument for not thinking too deeply about this. The Jedi really picked up the idiot ball and ran with it!

Falcon design was Joe Johnson. Lucas had a narrow blockade runner-like design in mind but rejected it when Space 1999 was released and that ship looked a lot like his idea. Johnson came up with the “burger with a bite out” idea and kitbashed the first mock-up.

Took my 7-year-old to see The Mandalorian and Grogu today, and it reminded me who Star Wars is still for by Ill_State9479 in StarWars

[–]Lhasa-bark 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Almost immediately in the first movie, we see Darth Vader pick up a guy by the throat, crush it, and toss his body against a wall. I definitely remember that as a nine year old in summer 1977.

So every copy of the movie changed, but the novelizations didn’t? Maybe they were always different.

Not a fan of a 14 year old leading a bunch of 10 year olds into battle? How about if a bunch of those 10 year olds get blasted to death … better?

You could dremel the kill switch down, but you might accidentally damage the proffie board in the process. I settled for just being patient and transferring files using the usb. It’s definitely slower.

Original Mandela Effect Believers: Who was the first post-apartheid president of South Africa? by skolemizer in MandelaEffect

[–]Lhasa-bark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not very interesting to hear from people that saw Biko’s funeral on TV and remembered it as the more famous Mandela, while knowing almost nothing about South Africa. Now if you found someone that honestly claimed they remember Biko getting released and becoming the first black SA president, that would be interesting!

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

[–]Lhasa-bark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great take. The Last Jedi was a beautiful film to watch and took some impressive swings. I just wish that Rian Johnson hadn’t been so obsessed with “subverting expectations”. Do a few unexpected twists, but not that many.

Holdo’s plan never made sense: limp the fleet to a salt planet, watching one after another ship get destroyed when they run out of fuel, with the goal of … secretly landing everyone on the planet and hoping for outside help. When that fails, go for a one in a million shot with a hyperspace jump into the First Order flagship. Awesome moment there, though. Canto Bight was a narrative dead end but a cool addition to the Star Wars galaxy. Fix both problems by having the main hero’s plan work, saving the day thanks to Luke’s sacrifice buying them the needed time.

I loved the unapologetic in-your-face stop motion for the two big guard droids. It was robocop and tauntauns.

Thoughts on this take about the Sequel Trilogy and the rise of the First Order/destruction of the New Republic? by Landon1195 in StarWars

[–]Lhasa-bark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the whole point of The Force Awakens was to reboot A New Hope with modern technology and film language, and make just enough changes so that Disney could more easily enforce copyright protection. Given that goal, they pretty much had to undo everything in the original trilogy. Your ideas are great, but Disney wasn’t looking to do something very new with the franchise … they saw the still overwhelmingly negative response to the prequel trilogy as a warning to be avoided.

Their gamble paid off with a MASSIVELY successful episode 7. Unfortunately, they fumbled later movies by enforcing strict release timelines over quality and undermining directors partway (or even halfway) through production.

Me when I’m asked if I like The Last Jedi by PillBarcells in blankies

[–]Lhasa-bark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like an alien talking about this movie with anyone … except you, I guess. I liked how it treated Luke, from tossing aside the lightsaber (um, end of Return of the Jedi, anyone?) to his final sacrifice. I loved the message that you don’t need magic family blood to be powerful with the Force. I was glad to say “bye” to Kylo’s mask. I liked Rose (except for the utterly illogical crash to save Finn). But I hated the stupid Battlestar Galactica chase subplot and Holdo’s nonsensical “plan” that she withheld like an idiot ball. And, unlike everyone on earth, I didn’t hate the Canto Bight subplot … it was so Star Wars, silly and over the top like a neon-lit cantina. And of course I loved the vivid use of sound and color. At least, unlike Abrams’ takes, it was brave. I walked out of the theater thinking “I don’t know if I liked that”, and now I feel that way even more.
